1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Generally The standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) 2005, is adopted by Government as the UK methodology for calculating the energy performance of dwellings. It is used to demonstrate compliance for dwellings with Part L of the Building Regulations (England & Wales) and Part J (Scotland) and to provide energy ratings for dwellings. The calculation is based on the energy balance taking into account a range of factors that contribute to energy efficiency:
• Materials used for construction of the dwelling • Thermal insulation of the building fabric • Ventilation characteristics of the dwelling and ventilation
equipment • efficiency and control of the heating system(s) • solar gains through openings of the dwelling • the fuel used to provide space and water heating, ventilation
and lighting • renewable energy technologies.
Ratings are not affected by the geographical location, so that a given dwelling has the same rating in all parts of the UK. The procedure used for the calculation is based on the BRE Domestic Energy Model, which provides a framework for the calculation of energy use in dwellings. The procedure is consistent with the European standards BS EN 832 and BS EN ISO 13790.
1.2 Method of Calculations Calculations have been provided under SAP 2005 for the conversion of a barn into a dwelling. The work is deemed as a Material Change of Use and the calculations meet the provisions of paragraphs 25-27 of Approved Document L1B. Controlled services are in accordance with paragraphs 31 to 48 of L1b
Retained thermal elements have been renovated and therefore have been upgraded in accordance with paragraphs 56 and 57 of L1B. Compliance with L1B Approved Document 2006 edition is determined with the Building Research Establishment approved program Elmhurst.
1.3 Summary of Calculations
The SAP Rating for this converted property is 66 (Band D) The Environmental Impact Rating is 73 (Band C) C0² Emissions are 2.40 tonnes/yr Therefore, the converted dwelling, Flat 1, 92 Ladbroke Road, Redhill, is compliant with the requirements of SAP 2005.

2.3 Primary Heating System The design includes electric panel, convector or radiant heaters with programmer and room thermostats.
2.4 Secondary Heating System None
2.5 Domestic Hot Water Dual Immersion heaters in 130ltr cylinder.
2.6 Ventilation Ventilation shall consist of natural ventilation with intermittent extract fans.
2.7 Lighting 100% of artificial lighting within the dwelling are to be low energy.
