School library media coordinators know the content appropriate to their teaching specialty.

Integrate effective strategies for accessing, evaluating, and synthesizing information resources to support teaching and learning.

Implement a school wide research model. Assure that students are safe and ethical users

of information and technology resources.

Planning

Collaborate with teachers – essential question, project parameters, research materials, product, rubric, length of time needed

Have a good idea of the resources I want the students to use. In some cases I pull them ahead of time. Other times I want them to find the resources, but I always know what’s out there so that I can guide them if needed.

Come up with an example of using the Big 6 process that will hook the students.

How do I start?

I begin with explaining the steps I go through when trying to solve a real life problem or need to

make a big decision.

Super 3 examples – deciding on a Halloween costume, going to the grocery store, writing a letter to Santa

Big 6 examples – buying a car, getting a pet, family is moving and trying to decide where to go, which new technology should I spend my money on

We discuss the project and how the parts fit into the Big 6 or Super 3 model.

*Walk through the rubric so that students know what they need to do to be successful.

(40 min. class)

I emphasize that when they leave elementary school they will be expected to be researchers who can cite sources,

evaluate/analyze information, and have a plan to begin a project on their own.

Daily

*Each day we work on a project I point out what part/s of the Big 6 we are doing.

*We discuss why we are doing that step and how it is helpful.

*We talk about what we would miss if we skipped the step.

Evaluate

On the rubric, we usually include a column for students to evaluate themselves and a column for teachers to evaluate the students.

They evaluate their product and their process.

I always spend time talking about how reflecting on what we did and how we did it teaches us about ourselves. It’s important to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. It’s how you get better!
