ANGLE ON: Bulletin board with colourful flyers held up bypins.

Miller walks into frame and begins to look systematicallyfrom top to bottom. He stops at eye level and takes one of

the sheets into his hands.

ANGLE ON: Flyer.

The Flyer reads: Need Roommate ASAP -- Only upcoming monthsrent required. It has an elaborate design, its quite overthe top.

ANGLE ON: Millers back.

Miller folds the flyer and puts in in his pants.

CUT TO:

EXT. TORONTO - SMALL STREET - ENTRANCE OF APARTMENT COMPLEX- MORNING

MEDIUM-LONG SHOT: Miller walks along the street towards thecomplex and pulls out the flyer. He looks down at the pieceof paper then back up at the door then opens the door

INT. THE APARTMENT - LOBBY - BY DOOR - CONTINUOUS

MEDIUM CLOSE SHOT ON MILLER: Inside of lobby entrance.

Miller is halfway through the door when he notices DOORMAN 1a few feet behind him. He continues to hold the door for theman. But the man enters the building beside instead. Anotherman walks towards the door.

FOCUS CLOSE UP: Miller. Miller gives him a smile.

FOCUS CLOSE UP: Doorman 2. Doorman 2 gives Miller a strangelook.

Doorman 2 enters the same door as Doorman 1.

MILLERMhhm.

EXT. SMALL STREET - ENTRANCE OF APARTMENT COMPLEX -

CONTINUOUS

MEDIUM LONG SHOT OF: Across the street of apartment.

GROCERY WOMAN walks towards the door as well. Miller givingup trying to be helpful stops holding the door and entersthe building. GROCERY WOMAN was actually trying to enter thesame building as him. She approaches door.

INT. THE APARTMENT - LOBBY - BY DOOR - CONTINUOUS

ANGLE ON: From inside lobby entrance doors. Grocery womanopens the door herself, giving Miller a dirty look.

MILLER (cont’d)(while door is closed)

Sorry.

MEDIUM SHOT: From entrance door, have view of most of lobbyand elevator.

Grocery Woman enters the lobby. Grocery Woman gives him adismissive look. They enter the elevator, Grocery Womanfirst. The doors shut, ending the shot.

INT. INSIDE ELEVATOR - THE APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS

(background) Elevator Music

MEDIUM-HIGH ANGLE SHOT: Elevator.

Miller fidgets a bit as if trying to figure out what to say.There is an awkward silence. Grocery Woman adjusts the bags.Finally, the Elevator dings, Grocery Woman exits Elevator.Miller looks longingly after her. Elevator door closes. Theelevator dings again, Miller exits as well.

ANGLE ON: Elevator doors interior closing.

FADE IN:

MEDIUM SHOT: From elevator - Miller walking down apartmenthallway, towards camera. Miller looks at both doors on each

side then continues walking down the hallways lookingpredominantly to his left. He stops halfway down the hallwayat a door.

ANGLE ON: Miller’s back.

Miller knocks. Nothing happens, he knocks again.

CHAD (O.S)(muffled)

Hold your horses I’ll be there in aminute!

MILLERUhh -- Take your time!

Chad opens door and stands in the doorway. He stands withgreat posture and a big smile on his face.

CHADWell,

(drawn out)hello.

ANGLE ON: Over Chad’s shoulder.

MILLERHi. My names Miller I read your ad,you’re looking fora room-mate right?

ANGLE ON: Over Miller’s shoulder.

CHADOh of course! Please, Come in.

Miller hesitates then walks in, he looks extremelyuncomfortable

The apartment is modern, clean, and well furnished.

CHAD (cont’d)Welcome to casa de Chad. Threebedrooms and a shared bath. Thereis also another room-mate, he’s alovely young man. One kitchen,hmm. What else?

(beat)Do you want to look around? Thisplace is a mess. I really shouldhave cleaned up more.

MILLEROh its fine, its actually quiteclean to my standards.

CHAD(proudly)

I guess it is. I did take some timeout of my rehearsing to get this

sorted.

MILLER(relieved)

Oh are you busy? I don’t mindcoming later.

CHADNo, of course not. Please, have aseat.

Miller takes a seat, he notices a photo of Chad with hismother, a 30-40 year old african american lady.

MILLER(pointing at photo)

Who’s this? Your girlfriend?

CHAD(laughs)

No silly, that’s my mother.

MILLERShe seems like a nice woman.

CHAD(proudly)

You can say that again. She is thestrongest and most independentwoman I know.

MILLERHow nice.

CHADNow, on to business. Don’t be astranger, you know what they sayabout strangers

(beat)they bring danger.

MILLERActually, according to Stats Canadayou are far more likely to bekilled by someone you know than astranger.

CHADOh.

(beat)Interesting.

(trying to change subject)So, Miller, what do you do for aliving?

MILLERMy uncle got me a job at acall centre, I have my firstday tomorrow. What do you do?

CHADMagic.

MILLERYou’re a wizard?

CHAD(laughs)

I’m a magician. Or anillusionist if I’m beingpolitically correct. But my realpassion is stand up comedy.

MILLERWhat a coincidence. That isactually the reason I moved to into the city.

Enter Lloyd, he comes in behind Miller from the front door

and stops suddenly. He didn’t expect anyone to be aroundjudging from the look on his face. He holds a gym bag in hisleft hand and a school bag slung around his right shoulder.He slouches slightly.

CHADLloyd, meet our potential roommateMiller.

LLOYDHi, Miller nice to meet you. Chad,can I talk to you in the other roomfor a second?

CHADExcuse us.

Chad and Lloyd leave the room.

LLOYD (O.S)I thought we went over this, ifyou’re going to interviewpotential roommates I should behere.

CHAD (O.S)What? you don’t trust me?

LLOYD (O.S)

My name is on the lease, this is myapartment.

CHAD (O.S)So am I a guest then?

LLOYD (O.S)You know what I mean, ifanything happens it’s ultimately myresponsibility.

CHAD (O.S)Well you’re never here when I need

you.

LLOYD (O.S)Chad, some of us have real jobs. Wedon’t all just play with kids for aliving.

CHAD (O.S)You sound like my dad. Iliterally bring magic intochildren’s lives. What do you dothat’s so great?

LLOYD (O.S)Wait. What were we even talkingabout again?

CHAD (O.S)We’re talking about how we don’t dofun things any more.

Look, we’ll discuss this later. Youalready told him he couldhave the room didn’t you?

CHAD (O.S)Of course not, he just got here.We’re just getting acquainted.

LLOYD (O.S)Okay good, let’s get back to him.He’s probably thinks we are talkingabout him.

Lloyd and Chad enter the room.

CHADSorry about that we had to discuss

our dinner plans. We decided to eatin tonight.

Lloyd glares at Chad

CHAD (CONT’D)So as I was saying, before I was sorudely interrupted. My dream is tobe a star, in television, movies,and radio.

LLOYDSo how exactly did we get to this

subject again?

CHADOur friend here just told me hedoes stand up.

LLOYDOh you do stand up as well? Haveyou done a set yet?

MILLERMy first time I had a bit about howpeople with alcoholic parents don’tbecome alcoholics themselves. Sowhen I have kids I’m going to startdoing meth to be a martyr for mykids and how that makes me a gooddad.

Lloyd and Chad laugh.

MILLERI’m glad you think so. It bombedpretty hard.

(beat)So do you guys have a club you goto?

CHADMe and Lloyd usually go to ’TheSet’ on Front Street as well assome open mic nights at local barsin our area.

LLOYDYea, Toronto is one of the bestplaces for up and coming comics.

There are tons of small venueswhere you can go and try out jokes.

MILLERI’m still pretty nervous aboutperforming so it would be nice if Icould go to one of the smallervenues with you.

LLOYDYou’ll get over it, it’s that wayfor a lot of comics. I was the sameway when I started out.

CHADNot me, I always owned the stage. Iwas born to be a star.

LLOYDWell Chad you’re a unique guy tosay the least.

CHAD(proudly)

LLOYD(gives Chad a deadpan look)(changing subject)

So what do you think, Miller? Wouldyou like to move in?

MILLERI guess so, I mean I’m wasting alot more money staying at a motelright now.

CHAD

(bitter)He doesn’t seem very excited.

LLOYD(looks at Chad, annoyed)

Chad.(looks at Miller)

Cool, do you need any help pickingup your stuff from your motel?

MILLERNo, no. I’m fine, really. I shouldprobably get going now though,

before it gets too dark.

CHADOh do you have poor night vision?Me too. What helps me is makingsure I’ve had at least one carrot aday.

LLOYDChad, he probably lives in a roughneighbourhood.

CHAD

All right well you should havecarrots anyway, they are anexcellent source of Vitamin A.Remember not to talk to strangers,as I have just found out people youknow are much more dangerous

LLOYDGood luck, hope you...

(trails off)don’t get murdered?

MILLER(sarcastically)

Well I guess now I’m going to haveto make new plans for tonight.Thanks guys.

Lloyd chuckles, Chad isn’t amused.

LLOYD

You need to stop listening to that’Secret’ crap, just cause we made acouple jokes doesn’t mean we areco-conspirators in his murder.

Chad covers his ears.

CHADStop using that word!

Knock on door.

CHAD (CONT’D)

Oh thank god, its him.

Chad walks to the door and opens it.

CHADWhat took you so long? We wereworried sick.

LLOYDHE was worried sick.

ANGLE ON: Millers face, he looks terrified.

ANGLE ON: Entire living room.

Miller enters, He has a suitcase.

MILLER(ashamed)

Nothing, I just lost track of time.

In the alley way is a very sketchy looking man, he has awinter hat on and its not winter, as well a hood.

MUGGERHey man, could you give me a hand,I’m trying to move this antiqueblack and white TV into my loft andI can’t do it alone. I’ll toss yousome cash for your help.

MILLER(hesitant)

Sure.

Miller steps into the alley

MUGGERIt’s just against the wall by thatdoor over there

Miller and Mugger walks to the door

MILLER(confused)

I don’t see a TV.

MUGGERGive me all your cash.

Miller Immediately puts his hands up.

MILLER(scared)

MUGGER(angrily)

(beat)I actually don’t have any cash onme at the moment.

MUGGER(angrily)

What do I look like, an idiot?

MILLERI promise I’m not lying, I’mstarting work tomorrow. Can I write

you a cheque or pay you back laterfor this?

MUGGERA cheque? That’s not how thisworks.

(beat)You know what just give me yourcell phone.

MILLER(ashamed)

I don’t have a cellphone.

MUGGERIt’s 2014 bro, how do you not havea cell phone? I rob people for aliving and I have a cell phone.

Awkward silence.

MUGGER(laughs)You know what.

(beat)I can’t believe I’m doing this.

Mugger hands Miller a 5 dollar bill.

MUGGER (cont’d)The next time I see you, you betterhave some money for me, and acellphone for yourself. I’m notRobin Hood you know, I got to make

a living.

Mugger jogs down the dark alley, Miller stands there frozenwith the same face he had when he opened the door.

MILLERYou know what guys? I’mpretty tired, I’m going head tobed now.

CHADBut its so early, why don’t youwatch Extreme Home Makeover withus?

MILLERI would love to but I am prettytired plus I have to be up earlytomorrow.

LLOYDAll right no problem, goodnight.

CHADSweet dreams.

Miller enters his room with his suitcase.

Miller’s room has a single bed, a desk with a lamp and achair. Miller places his suitcase on the desk, sets thealarm, and lies on his bed with his eyes open he is clearlyshaken up. There is a sequence of him lying in bed in thesame place as it turns from Night to Day. The alarm rings itsays 6:30, he immediately closes it and sighs.

INT. - THE APARTMENT - MILLER’S ROOM - DAY 2

(background) Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go (Muffled)

Miller gets up and takes a toothbrush, a set of clothes, anda towel from his suitcase and exits his room.

CUT TO:

INT. - THE APARTMENT - THE LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

(background) Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go (CONT’D) (becomes

clear)

ANGLE ON: Entire Living Room.

The couches have been moved and in their places is a largeyoga mat. Chad is currently doing a yoga stance.

CHAD (cont’d)Oh, Miller good morning. Are youfeeling better? There’s some lemongrass chai on the stove if you’dlike some.

MILLERCool, thanks.

Lloyd enters from his room clearly upset. He stands in hisdoorway in boxers and a wife beater, with bed head, andsquinted eyes.

LLOYDDamn it Chad, Didn’t we agree thatthe apartment is a Wham! freezone before 6 o’clock?

CHADYes we did, but it is past 6:30

LLOYD(beat)

Why would I ask you to wait till 6AM to play a song?

LLOYDJust turn it off.

Lloyd turns around and slams the door.

CHADDon’t mind him, his Chakras areblocked when he wakes up in themorning. He really should startadding more fibre in his diet

MILLERWell, I have (insert high fibre

CHADI can tell, I could sense yourChakra as soon as you woke up.

Miller makes a confused face as he didn’t sleep at all lastnight.

MILLERI should take a shower now. I’vegot my first day of work today andI don’t want to be late.

CHADOh Yes, showers are excellent foropening up your Chakras.

Miller enters wash room.

Miller is shirtless and has his hair combed he is nowlooking in to the mirror.

MILLERWell the fact of the matter is I’man excellent salesperson. It’s hardto quantify, but I’ll give it ashot. I have an excellentunderstanding of marketing from mybusiness course in grade 11. It

I have a lot of ideas that I thinkwould benefit this company. Theproblem with telemarketing ispeople want to know who is sellingthem the product. I think we shouldfocus on that before pitching theproduct.

(beat)Oh you want me to become the bossall ready? I can’t say I’msurprised. We’ll I couldn’tpossibly... fine I’ll do it.

CUT TO:

INT. - THE APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - LATER

Miller exits wash room with combed hair, a dress shirt,khakis, and brown leather loafers. The living room is nowempty but there is a note by a bowl on the coffee table, thebowl has a set of keys in it. Miller walks to table andpicks up and reads note.

CHAD (V.O)Miller, I had to head out to aclients house but here is your setof keys. Good luck on your firstday of work. Love, Chad.

Miller makes an uncomfortable face when he hears ’Love,Chad’. He takes the keys and exits through the front door.

CUT TO:

EXT. - TORONTO - STREET - BY ALLEYWAY - MORNING

Miller is walking by an alleyway. There is a veryrespectable looking man in the alleyway.

SAMHey -- Hey buddy! Can you help meI’ve seem to have lost my glassesin this alleyway and I’ve gotan interview today I can’t be latefor.

Miller stops and looks at Sam.

What do I look like, an idiot?

SAM(confused)

Huh?

Miller walks away.

ANGLE ON: SAM’S defeated face as Miller walks awayconfidently.

ANGLE ON: Miller walking through a Toronto street. Millerssmiles and nods knowingly.

CUT TO:

EXT. - TORONTO - ALLEYWAY - CONTINUOUS

Sam is now on his knees sifting through garbage looking forhis glasses.

END OF ACT 2

ACT 3

INT. - CALL CENTRE - WAITING ROOM - MORNING

In the waiting room there is a receptionist at a desk, witha bunch of chairs with magazines and newspapers. Miller sitsat one of these chairs and is reading a newspaper. Samenters the front door, slightly out of breath. Sam now has

glasses but his pants are now considerably dirtier. As soonas Miller spots him he jumps in his seat slightly and covershis face completely with the newspaper he is holding. Hepeaks above it every once in a while. Sam walks up to thereceptionist.

SAMHi, Sam Wright. I have an interviewat 8:15

RECEPTIONISTYes, please have a seat, you willbe called when it is your turn.

SAMThank you.

Sam takes an open seat near Miller, he looks as if he’sthinking,and wipes some dirt off his pants. He glances atMiller whose face is covered with the newspaper.

RECEPTIONISTMiller. Miller Jennings, Joey willsee you now. Just walk down thehall and its the second door onyour left.

MILLER(in a false deep voice)Thank you mam.

Miller puts the newspaper down and quickly walks towards thedoor attempting to hide his face from Sam. Sam continues tolook at Miller as if he’s thinking.

CUT TO:

INT. - THE OFFICE - JOEY’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Joey’s office is a small office that is unorganized there

are a lot of loose pieces of paper on his desk, there is apicture of actor Michael Douglas framed on his wall. Thereis also a name label that says ’JOEY’ on his desk.

Miller enters with a relieved face as he escaped the awkwardsituation. Joey is looking at his computer and typing.

JOEYJust one moment, please have aseat.

MILLER(still in false deep voice)

No problem

Miller clears his throat

MILLER (CONT’D)No problem, take your time.

Joey finishes with what he was doing on the computer andlooks at Miller.

JOEYMr. Jennings! Welcome to the USSEnterprise.

(speaks into his hand)This is your captain Joey speaking.

This amuses Joey much more than Miller.

MILLERHello -- Captain Joey is it?

JOEYJust Joey is fine, here at starfleet command we only calltelephone reps by their last name.

MILLER

Oh.

JOEYYes we aren’t your typical callcentre, we do things differentaround here. You’ll start todayby shadowing our top salesman Mr.Hemingsworth, he’ll get you up tospeed. If you have any questions,or just want to hang out and talk,my door is always open --metaphorically of course, pleaseclose it on your way out.

MILLEROh, is that it?

JOEYThat’s it. The training room isacross the hall, Mr. Hemingsworthshould be waiting for you there.

MILLERSo I got the job? I prepared someanswers if you want..

JOEY(cuts Miller off)

That’s not necessary. I alreadyknow everything I need to know about you.

MILLER(smiling, happy)

Awesome, thank youMist...um.. Joey. You won’t regretthis.

JOEYI don’t live with regrets, life istoo short for that.

Joey salutes Miller as he exits Joey’s office.

Miller walks across hallway. He enters the training room.

INT. - THE OFFICE - TRAINING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Inside the room there is 5 computers on a long desk withdividers in between. On the computer on the most right sitsa man in his earlier twenties. He is slouched and clearlynot worried about being seen. He has a sneer on his face ashe looks at his phone texting.

MILLERUm, Hi, Mr. Hemingsworth?

RICO(looks up)

Did Joey tell you that we call eachother by our last names? Cause we

actually do not do that.

MILLEROh, okay. I’m Miller nice to meetyou.

RICORico.

Rico goes back to texting, Miller hesitates before taking aseat beside Rico.

MILLER

So, when do we start?

Rico doesn’t look at Miller during this entire conversation.

RICOWe don’t start until our dailymorning pep talk.

MILLERWhen does that start?

RICOIt’s happening right now in themain room, just head back here whenits done.

Miller exits to the hallway.

Miller walks down the hallway to the opening at the end ofthe hall which leads to a large room with lots of cubicles.There are people lining the wall, the people are a mix ofyoung men and women, middle aged, and ridiculously oldpeople. In the centre of the room is BILAL a 30-somethingyear old Indian man with long hair and a scruffy, unkemptgoatee.

BILAL..And thats why sales are down. Youpeople don’t seem to be giving ityour best[U+0085]

Bilal trails off as he notices Miller

BILAL (cont’d)(angry)

Hey, why are you late? Go find aplace on the wall.

MILLERI’m sorry I just started today andjust finished my interview withJoey.

BILALI’m sorry, did I ask you aquestion?

MILLER(meekly)

I’m almost certain you did

Everyone laughs, Bilal is clearly upset about this, he givesMiller a dirty look. Miller quickly finds a space, peoplemake room for him. His comment has won the respect of hisco-workers.

BILALAs I was saying before I wasinterrupted by funny man over here.

Bilal gestures to Miller. Miller looks slightly embarrassed.Miller then notices Valerie - An attractive black girl whomis eyeing him, but Miller turns to listen to Bilal. Also in

the lineup is Danny a tall, east-indian, with thick-framedblack glasses.

BILAL (cont’d)Our sales are down, it is as if youpeople don’t even care any more.You guys need to follow the scriptI wrote.

Miller points to himself and gives a questioning look.

Bilal walks to a single cubicle in the corner of the bigroom. Miller follows him.

INT. - THE OFFICE - MAIN ROOM - BILAL’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Bilal’s cubicle looks like an office from the inside, thereis a desk with a computer facing two chairs. A picture sitson his desk of a young cricket team. He has two, largecabinets and a clock that hangs right above the desk. Thepapers and files are organized well and the cubicle as awhole is well maintained.

BILALHave a seat funny man.

MILLERI’m very sorry. I wasn’t trying tobe disrespectful. I’m new I juststarted today.

As Miller walks back to the hallway he gets sympathetic /approving looks from his co-workers as they have likely

heard everything that Bilal said. As he passes one cubicle,Danny’s head pops out, he looks sympathetic.

On one table sits Danny, who looks to be sittingquietly with Mary . He spots Miller and motions for him totake an empty seat at the table. Miller walks over and takesa seat.

MILLER

That Rico guy is a socio-path.

MARYOh you mean Gordon Gecko Jr.?

DANNYYeah, we don’t all use his cheaptactics. Some of us actually stillhave souls and compassion for otherhuman beings.
