President’s Letter by Greg Katz

Do not save your loving speeches For your friends till they are dead;

Do not write them on their tombstones, Speak them rather now instead.

-Anna Cummins I can’t wait another minute, another second to tell all of you how proud and joyful I am for what each of you bring to Front Range Contemporary Quilters. After we finished “Show and Tell” at our last meeting, I was exhilarated and fueled with excitement over what all of you are accomplishing in your studios and how you have chosen to impact the world. Standing and bearing witness to all that you choose to make happen in the world is a vital component of leadership, for me. As the organization matures and we as artists create sustainable and successful art practices, I am astonished at how important community is in maintaining that success. If we don’t have a safe place, with supportive people who will continue to stand beside us as we take risks, how will we ever succeed? I be-lieve that having the presence to stand and have FRCQ provide a forum for each of you to share your inspiration with others is the biggest catalyst for each of us moving forward in our own journey. The board has just completed its first year of service. Many of your board members have been planning for 2008 for months and I believe you’ll all have enormous opportunities for inspiring experiences. Once again I would like to invite all of you to become active in the organization. Join a committee, offer to teach a workshop or present at a newcomers meeting, create a special inter-est group, the opportunities are endless. At the end of 2007 we had 273 members, that’s an incredible accomplishment. I believe that FRCQ’s reputation as one of the premier textile art organizations in the country is the magnetic force that ignites many artists desires to become a part of our progressive community. I’m thankful that I have the opportunity to experience that joy all through the year, not just at the holidays. I hope at our next meeting, you’ll take a moment to thank someone who has inspired you throughout the year or through the years. Here’s to a productive, artistic and inspiring 2008.

“Denise Labadie” Denise started sewing at age nine after a year of pleading with her mother, who apparently didn't quite understand her fascination. Permission granted, she dove right in, making an extensive wardrobe for her Barbie. She credits her first 4-H leader, a policewoman, with teaching her the value of precision in her work and how to sew and un-sew until it was truly correct. For many years Denise had a sewing business out of her home, so she could spend the time she wanted to with her son as he grew up. Where sewing is in-volved, Denise has probably done it - home dec, needlepoint finishing, and a wide variety of garments. If you get a chance to visit Denise's new studio in the lower level of her home, don't even think about delaying. It's a fabulous space designed by her husband with custom cabinetry, a huge design wall and even a snuggle space for her large labradoodle. Denise got hooked on quilting in 1993 when she took a class with Michael James focusing on color and paint-ing. She feels that, "It was the best thing to get me going". She went on to take classes in traditional quilting forms and met someone at an Allegre Retreat who told her about FRCQ. With a class in 1997 from Jean Ne-blett on strip piecing techniques, she started the first of her "stone quilts", featuring the ancient and mystical stone monuments of Ireland. Her husband had presented her with a birthday trip to Ireland in 1997. She "felt shivers all over", the first time she saw the Piper Stones and knew she just had to make a pictorial quilt about them. In her early quilts she used commercial fabric, but after a class with Mickey Lawler on painting fabric, she now uses her own hand-painted fabric to get the visual textures she wants.

She's received several awards for her work, but her favorites are the People's Choice and MacCarthy Memorial Awards at Quilt National 2007 and the Best of Show awards from the Palmer Lake "Art and Nature of Fiber" show and the Allegre Retreat. Denise feels that some of the best advice she has received is to try and avoid being slavishly committed to a specific picture that you may have of a desired outcome and to try instead to evaluate and pay attention to the work as it is developing. Instead of staring at that one piece of fabric on the design wall for 20 minutes, she ad-vises to have confidence in your own point of view and draw on your own instinctive sense of color and design. Denise was delighted that her work was selected for the first show at the Ricky Tim's Gallery who now represents her. You can also see Denise's work at her website, www.labadiefiberart.com and at a two-women show, entitled "Sticks and Stones", coming up January 11-February 16, 2008 at Old Firehouse Gallery, 667 4th Avenue & Coffman in Longmont.

DVDs and CDs: Part 1 Many creative artists are publishing CDs or DVDs illustrating their techniques and design inspiration. Here are several websites where you can find workshops from prominent designers and fiber artists. www.ccpvideos.com contains videos with online samples from a wide variety of artists, including collage artists regularly featured in Cloth Paper Scissors. www.dharmatraders.com is now featuring a number of videos that cover topics from fabric painting, Shiva paint sticks, dyeing, machine embroidery, and other topics, and Jane Dunnewold’s DVDs. Dharma is a great source of surface design supplies and is adding new media all the time. Ricky Tims’s Grand Finale is a polished DVD describing methods for making his trademark quilts. While you probably already know quite a bit of this information, Tims uses several unusual products, like wash-away thread, to facilitate his intricate designs. Additional tips on quilting a bed-sized quilt in a domestic sew-ing machine and adding a totally machine-stitched and piped binding round out this very impressive video workshop and resource. www.rickytims.com. Katie Pasquini-Masopust has a video that complements her Color and Composition for the Creative Quilter book, which was written with artist Brett Barker. The DVD, Simple Steps to Dynamic Art Quilts, is also sold with newer releases of the color book, and takes you through KPM’s methods of fabric selection, ab-stracting a design, enlarging designs, and the final quilt-as-you-go assembly of large quilt sections. This is a good resource for a beginning art quilter. Available in quilt shops or from www.katiepm.com. Gabriella Swain, a well-known art quilter from Texas, has released several DVDs. Creativity on Demand contains exercises to work yourself out of a rut, tips on evaluating and modifying designs, and encourage-ment to try new techniques. Cut up and reassemble a questionable piece, use a paper viewfinder to isolate interesting portions of an image as a quilt subject, have fun and never stop trying to experiment with your work are her mantras. Order directly from Swain, www.handapplique.com/catalog.

Every artist has a day when they feel uninspired. Try doing something unexpected or out of the ordinary to get those creative juices flowing. If you feel you need some help through those crea-tive lulls, try some of these inspirational ideas. • Randomly select a word from the dictionary and

explore what it means to you. • Take a meandering walk down your favorite path

or one that you have never traveled. • Find a cozy chair at the local mall and watch

people. • Look through old photographs. • Browse the internet (try www.stumbleupon.com) • Re-read a favorite book • Keep a quote jar with your favorite quotes and

randomly select one. • Select a day (or a few hours) to volunteer for

those less fortunate than you. • Select a quote from your favorite book and ex-

plore it • Play a silly game with your children. • Fingerpaint • Keep an art journal where you capture images

and quotes that come to your mind. • Doodle • Visit a local gallery • Take a technique class • Visit a local senior center and talk to the people

about their life stories • Listen to music • Browse through magazines at the local news

stand. • Watch your favorite movie • Take a trip someplace you’ve never been before • Meditate or take a yoga class • Sing out loud to your favorite song and dance

around the living room • Meet a friend for coffee that you haven’t talked

to in awhile • Ask another FRCQ member what inspires them. • Laugh, smile and enjoy something you don’t

think you have time to do!

Countdown To Peace

Inspired by collaborative projects like the Aids Me-morial Quilt and Sonya Clark’s Beaded Prayers Pro-

ject, all artists are invited to help create the “Countdown to PEACE.”

Presented in calendar format, the project begins with March 19, 2003 (the day the war in Iraq began) and

will end when the war ends. At this point we are into the fifth year of the war; the calendar format

allows us a way to measure the full extent of the war and gives us a visual sense of its continuing scope.

Our very own Carol Ann Waugh can be found at

May 16, 2003 on the calendar.

FRCQ Yahoo Group One of the many benefits of being an FRCQ member is online access to the FRCQ Yahoo Group. This was set up as a way to communicate information to a large group without having to send out individual emails to the group. The Yahoo Group also provides space to upload files or photos. The monthly FRCQ newsletter is uploaded as soon as it goes to the printer so many members read the newsletter a week or so prior to receiving it the mail. The past 3 years of newsletters are archived on the Yahoo Group. If you are interested in gaining access to this valuable information tool, please email Jeanne Lounsbury at [email protected]. You will receive directions to get started with this additional means of communica-tion.
