STAN LAB PWR 1
White Mice and White Coats: The Rhetoric of Biomedical Science
Objective Blogging is a great tool to get the word out on what’s happening in science and to contribute to the conversations in science. For our class, we’ll use the blog as an extension of our classroom community – a place where you can come to share interesting material and helpful resources, ask questions, share ideas, and get feedback.

If you already have a Wordpress account, skip to step 5 and send an email to me ([email protected]) that tells me the email address you used to set up your wordpress account. If you don’t already have a wordpress account:
1. Go to www.wordpress.com 2. Click on “Sign Up Now” (see image below; note red circle)
3. THIS PART IS CRUCIAL – you want to set up an account, but not your own blog.
To do so, click “Sign up for just a username” (circled in red below). If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with your own blog, which will be pretty confusing. Follow the instructions to sign up for just a username.

4. Once you set up your username/password, you’ll have to authenticate it using the email address you provided – go to your email account and click the link Wordpress sends you.
5. Once you’ve completed all of these steps, send me an email ([email protected]) that tells me the email address you used to set up your Wordpress account. That way I can make you an author on the blog.

1. You will be invited to become a writer for our blog through email. Respond to that invitation and create a password.
2. Log in to our blog by going to www.wordpress.com and log in at the top right. You will also find this link in the sidebar of our blog.
3. Once you log in, you should see a new menu at the top. Under the “my blogs”
tab (second from the left), select “The Rhetoric of Biomedical Science.” For some of you, this will not be listed – you’ll just have the option to post a “new post”. In this case, skip down to #5.
4. If you clicked on the “Rhetoric of Biomedical Science” link in the “My Blogs”
section, you’ll now be taken to a page where you’ll see a “New Post” button in the upper right corner. Click on that and it will open the editing interface.

Christine Alfano q Blog entries are not meant to be too long! Use frequent
paragraph breaks and try to keep between 300-‐400 words. q Remember your audience! There may be international
readers, not just your classmates, so be sure to provide context as necessary and avoid jargon.
q Include links to other sites as relevant. – Remember, DO NOT use copyrighted material , although you are welcome to post your own images.
