Completing the issue is a beautifullyillustrated 64-page book, The Magic Rainforest,by John Marsden. The book’s enchanting multi-generational story – with wonderful Australiancharacters and creatures – brings the story andthe stamps to life. The creatures featured on thestamps and the role they play in the story of TheMagic Rainforest make a perfectly delightfulintroduction to the magic of stamp collecting.

The Magic RainforestThe book tells the story of Sam and Naomi’s travelsin the magic rainforest. The creatures the childrenmeet there are not always as they first seem. Somehelp the children, some have other plans.

To find the spring the children must use theirwits and the advice Sam’s grandmother givesthem just before they leave. Much is at stake.Sam’s grandfather is ill and longs for a taste ofthe purest water on earth.

The creatures come together in the miniaturesheet. The background of the miniature sheetis the magic rainforest in which the story is set.Collectors of all ages will enjoy finding thelinking elements between the stamps andassociated products.

Sam and his friend Naomi are on a quest to finda magic spring hidden deep in the Australianbush. On their journey Sam and Naomiencounter the Bunyip, Fairy, Gnome, Goblin,Wizard and Sprite who feature on the stamps inthis year’s Stamp Collecting Month issue.

Dear Readers,

In this in-between time – before David Maiden’s retirement(late September) and before the new Philatelic GroupManager is announced – the Bulletin team would like to giveyou a behind the scenes look at the Bulletin production.

As we put the finishing touches on this October-December Bulletin it is mid August. Yes mid August. It takesabout 14 weeks to produce each issue – from the time wereceive research reports on new issues, to the time we send itto you.

It is a complex process. Input comes from research, finance, marketing, and mail order staff – but mostly fromthe editor, Carol Daniels (who also edits the StampExplorer) and a designer from the Philatelic Design Studio.During this time the Bulletin evolves. As we write copy foreach issue or new product, check facts, proof read copy andobtain legal clearance the material is continually beingrefined with updated artwork, confirmation of product lists, mail order codes and for our Specialist Edition, informationfor the yellow pages. We go through three rounds of proofs, every page is read by at least five people with differentresponsibilities, before we send it to print.

At the same time we are developing the content, oursubscriber database is being updated and checked so it willbe up to date when we send it to the mailing house. Themailing house adds the address information, wraps theBulletin and posts it to you.

To keep it all on track, we meet each Friday morning toreview our progress, identify gaps in information, and agreeon next steps. The accompanying photo shows the team at arecent meeting, from left to right: Carol Daniels, RussellHick, Beth McKinlay and Wayne Shaw.

We wish David well in his ‘life after Post’ and want toassure you that the Philatelic Group – and especially theBulletin team – will always value your letters and feedback.

Russell Hick, Manager, Philatelic Marketing

The creation of the Magic RainforestFollowing the enormous success of Wild Babiesin 2001 and the great interest in fantasygenerated by both J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter™books, and J.R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of theRings, Australia Post looked for inspiration tothe great tradition of Australian fantasieswritten by May Gibbs and Norman Lindsay.

Australia Post commissioned author JohnMarsden and the illustrating team of MarkJackson and Heather Potter to create The MagicRainforest, a new Australian fantasy.

‘All right,’ Sam said. ‘We’ll go.’They left the next day. But before they went

Sam’s grandmother gave them some advice.‘You cannot do this alone,’ she told them. ‘The

bush can be dangerous, very dangerous. Or it canlook after you. Trust the one who comes from thestars, and the one who comes from the water.Trust the sound of the dance and the sound of asmile. But beware the dark rising, the greyheights, and the smell of the mire.’

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Sea Turtles

Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata)One of the smaller turtles, the hawksbill startslife as a carnivore but becomes omnivorous asan adult, feeding largely on molluscs, crustaceans, jellyfish and marine algae. Thehooked jaws are well adapted to prisingmolluscs and crabs out of crevices in or aroundcoral. Hawksbills occur circumglobally intropical seas, but are now rare throughoutmuch of their former range, largely because oftheir popularity as the ‘tortoiseshell turtle’.

Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea)The leatherback is the most distinctive of thesea turtles and is readily distinguished fromother sea turtles by its smooth relatively scale-less black skin. It is by far the largest livingspecies, its carapace length sometimesexceeding six feet. The leatherback feeds largelyon jellyfish and wanders great distances at sea. Itmay be the most threatened sea turtle world-wide, because its eggs are harvested as food inimportant nesting grounds.

Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)The green turtle in fact varies widely in colour. It occupies shallow seas where sufficient lightpenetrates to the sea-bed and ensures anabundant growth of marine grasses. When itwants to sleep it seeks out a location, such as anoverhanging ledge in a coral reef, whichprovides some degree of safety from largepredators such as sharks. The green turtle isperhaps the best-known species since its flesh ismost highly esteemed.

Turtles are living dinosaurs. Their evolutionaryhistory as sea-dwelling reptiles extends backabout 90 million years. Sea snakes and seaturtles are the only modern groups of reptileswhich successfully exploit the marineenvironment. Over the years sea turtle numbershave dwindled alarmingly because they havebeen hunted for their their eggs, for meat andfor their shells.

Turtles in Cocos watersThere are seven species of sea turtles and fourof them have been sighted at Cocos. These fourspecies are the subject of this issue. In additionto the stamps the issue includes a first day cover.

The stamps

Loggerhead (Caretta caretta)The loggerhead turtle has a large head withlarge dark brown eyes and extremely powerfuljaws. It feeds on crabs and other crustaceans, shellfish, sponges, jellyfish, fish and algae. Itspends long periods of time floating, apparentlyasleep, on the surface of the sea, basking in thesun. Loggerheads are seldom eaten, but theireggs are a delicacy and they are fast becomingdepleted.

The IllustratorThe stamps are illustrated by Ego Guiotto,Sydney. Ego also illustrated the May 2002Christmas Island Birds issue. That issue is alsoincluded in the 2002 WWF ConservationStamp Collection.

Racing Hall of FameAustralia’s Racing Hall of Fame was launched in 2001,but the original idea was conceived many years earlier. In January 1998 the Australian Racing MuseumCommittee resolved to set up a national body to recognisethe contributions made in all facets of racing by the manywonderful horses and hard-working individuals.

A judging panel made up of five racing experts eachfrom Victoria and New South Wales was appointed toselect the inaugural inductees to the Hall of Fame. Theywere required to recommend to the committee fiveinductees each in the categories of finest horse, jockey, trainer and racing identities, for example race callers, administrators, racing families and so on.

The panel met on numerous occasions to debatethe merits of proposed inductees. After much research, argument and discussion the choices were finalised. The first horses to be inducted were Phar Lap, Carbine,Bernborough, Tulloch and Kingston Town. Three ofthese horses (Phar Lap, Bernborough and Tulloch)featured on the 1978 race horses stamp issue.

Since the early days of the nineteenth centurythoroughbred racing has had an importantplace in Australian national consciousness.

The first races, impromptu matches held onthe roads out of Sydney, date from about 1807.Probably the colony’s first organised contesttook place on 30 April 1810 as part of theholiday entertainments at Parramatta. The firstproperly organised race meeting was arrangedby officers of the 73rd Regiment a few monthslater, on 15 October 1810. Races were run on a10-furlong (2.01-kilometre) track near thepresent intersection of Market and ElizabethStreets in Sydney.

In 1999-2000 a total of 428 thoroughbredrace clubs – metropolitan, provincial andcountry – conducted 21,764 races on 389racecourses throughout Australia.

The stampsThe illustrations of the five champion horsesinducted into Australia’s Racing Hall of Fameon 30 July 2002 depict different moments in arace, and convey the speed, colour, energyand atmosphere of a race meeting.

The horsesWakeful (b.1896), one of Australia’s greatestmares, was unplaced in only three of her 44starts. She carried huge weights to victory andshowed tremendous courage, never more sothan in the 1903 Melbourne Cup when shecarried a record weight for a mare and was only narrowly beaten by Lord Cardigancarrying 12 kg less.

Rising Fast (b.1949), known as the ‘glamour’horse of the 1950s, was big, robust, andimmensely powerful. In 1954 he won theCaulfield Cup, the W S Cox Plate and theMelbourne Cup, the only horse in racinghistory to win the treble in the same year. RisingFast won the Caulfield Cup again in possiblythe greatest race of his career the following year.

Manikato (b.1975) was a champion racehorsefor five years. A powerhouse galloper, he wonthe William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley fiveyears in a row, the last time in 1983 as a seven-year-old in heatwave conditions. Six weeks laterhe came out and won the Futurity Stakes atCaulfield, his fourth win in that event.

Might and Power (b.1993) has been comparedwith champions such as Tulloch and KingstonTown. In 1997 he won the Caulfield Cup, by arecord 7.5 lengths, and the Melbourne Cup. Inthe following year, he stormed home in theW S Cox Plate, slashing a full two seconds offthe record set only the year before.

Sunline (b.1995) is today’s champion. A big, strong mare from New Zealand, Sunline’scareer highlights include back-to-backW.S.Cox Plate victories (1999 and 2000).

Carrier envelope updateMajor mail processing centres are highlyautomated. They process millions of itemseach day and it is not possible to handprocess philatelic mail. In the August-September 2002 Bulletin we reported on atrial of carrier envelopes that would protectagainst multiple cancellations withoutdisrupting modern mechanised mailprocessing.

After our own testing we sent samplesto philatelic clubs and organisations. Wehave asked that they use the envelopes andreport back on their experience.

We believe the tests will confirm that thecarrier envelopes work. They preventmultiple cancellations without disruptingmechanised processing.

Look for an update on the tests in theJanuary-February issue of the AustralianStamp Bulletin.
