As part of our drive to develop our children’s listening skills, their range of vocabulary and their ability to express themselves eloquently, the classes have been incorporating lots of speaking and listening activities into their lessons. As we are keen to share more about the importance of good oracy skills and how you can promote these at home, we are excited to be able to invite you to join us for one of our Information Evenings with oracy expert, Cathy Mellor at the times shown below. During Character Education this week we have been learning about “gentle hands” and thinking about why it is important to be gentle at school with property and people. Foundation Stage

This week in Foundation Stage we have been carrying on with our topic of “Super Me”. The children have been thinking about what makes them the same and what makes them different from everyone else. The children are learning that everyone is special, and has things about them that make them unique. It has been lots of fun to look at photos of the children as babies, and we have enjoyed trying to guess who is who! We noticed how much we have changed since we were little and all the things we can do now that we couldn’t do before. During Character Education this week we have been learning about “gentle hands” and thinking about why it is important to be gentle at school with property and people. The children had to pass an egg around the circle without it breaking! They did so well and we’re pleased to say the egg got back to the start in one piece!

Key Stage 2

This week in Year 3/4, the children had mysterious parcels hand delivered to their classrooms. An author, Norman Messenger, had sent through three copies of his awe-inspiring book, The Land of Neverbelieve. The children were enthralled with the mesmerising imagery and fantastical language. Not only this – but to our disbelief, a letter slipped out from the pages of the book as we were reading it … Norman needed our help! Due to the fact the island moves, Mr Messenger was unable to complete his descriptions of some of the animals. The children set to work describing the animals using awesome adjectives, amazing adverbs and powerful verbs. Their work was creative and imaginative - a pleasure to read. We even had a chance to design our own animals that you might find in the Magical Lake. Mr Messenger will be pleased! Lessons in Science this week have focussed on different animal classes. We have been deciding whether animals are amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds or fish by looking at their features, characteristics and habitats. The children enjoyed sorting the animals and have begun to research information on their chosen animal group.

Key Stage 1

This week the children have been exploring exciting problems in stories. They’ve showed their speaking and listening skills through group work on identifying a problem from a picture and taking it in turns to suggest how the characters would solve the problem. The teachers were amazed with the wide variety of story vocabulary being used, as well as how well the children spoke and took turns to share ideas. In Maths this week we have been looking at representing numbers in different ways, especially using the ten frames. The children found out how clear the numbers are when they are in the frames and surprised themselves by recognising large numbers much more quickly! Courtney-Brooke said ‘I like to show numbers with the Numicon and the counters and the ten frames. It got much quicker.’ Year 1 and 2 have had a wonderfully creative afternoon today where they designed some fabulous art work. Some of the children decided to take their pencil for a walk on A4 paper and created super patterns using a range of colours and markings. A few of the children loved using their tens frame so much in Maths this week that they continued to work with their partner . We all adore sharing time on a Friday where we encourage the children to use the oracy skills that we value so highly at St Gilbert’s School. We have all enjoyed trying some new tongue twisters this week which have been tremendous fun!

Key Stage 2

This week, we were lucky to have some visitors from Stamford Bridge Club and the children had great fun learning how to play bridge. They listened to the rules really carefully and worked collaboratively with their team members to learn as they played, gradually getting more competitive as they went! The visitors were very impressed with the children’s positive approach and teamwork. This is what they said: “St. Gilbert's children were amazing today. They were so enthusiastic and really loved partnership card play. Our coaches all said it was a pleasure and a privilege to join you today.” In Maths, the children have been focussing on place value, especially in larger numbers… even into the millions! They have thought carefully about their mathematical explanations for why one number is greater or less than another and consolidated their understanding of the greater than and less than signs. It is fabulous to see that the children understand the importance of explaining their reasoning and this reflects well in their independent activities. In English, we have enjoyed our learning based around the text “Ice Bear”. The children have been using adventurous vocabulary to create expanded noun phrases and using their inference and prediction skills to think of questions related to the text. We are all looking forward to reading the story next week to find out what happens for sure! In Science, we have been learning about plant reproduction. The children have learnt how to take a cutting from a geranium plant to create a clone! The cutting from the parent plant should grow roots in the beakers of water that they have been placed in. Following that, they can be planted in the gardens!

Walking Home Arrangements – Year 6

If you son or daughter is in Year 6, they may only walk home alone if they have filled in a Mobile

Phone/Walking Home Agreement Form. In addition, Year 6 children are not allowed to take home their

younger siblings when walking home alone. We hope you will support us in this matter; the children’s

safety is always our priority.

Stamford News

We would like to bring your attention to some very exciting events happening in Stamford.

An exhibition from Stamford Civic Society is being held in the ballroom at Stamford Arts Centre on Saturday 28th

(10am-3pm) and Sunday 29th (10am-2pm) September as part of the town wide Georgian Festival. The aim of the

exhibition is to explore the changes to Stamford’s streets, buildings, trade and leisure to answer the question – Just

how did changing transport change Stamford?

Exhibition at the Arts Centre

St Gilbert’s was asked to help bring an exhibition on the streets of the town to life by providing illustrations of Georgian

buildings. (We did the artwork at the end of last term). Every single child from reception to Y6 did a drawing. The

children used their imaginations to create Georgian buildings using the ‘pattern book’ approach, just as the real people

of the town would have done: picking and choosing the architectural details like windows, doors or fine stonework,

which would grace a fashionable home of the time.

All of these images will be part of the exhibition at the Arts Centre, as part of a massive bunting decoration in the

ballroom. Everyone will be able to come along to see their work and each child who contributed will get their own

‘flag’ from the bunting at the end of the exhibition.

The Civic Society are also planning a variety of interactive elements to the exhibition, to run alongside the fascinating

information boards.

A static, virtual ‘carriage ride’ for children – see how fast a horse and carriage could go compared to a

travelling in a car!

A silent disco including dramatised excerpts from literature of the time.

A beautiful lantern parade, with many lanterns created from our children in Year 5/6

The evening parade will be celebrating the Georgians’ fascination with invention, spectacle and wonder and it would

be wonderful if you could attend the parade with your child, to walk through the streets of Stamford. If you are able to

attend , the timings for the Saturday Evening Show Stopper are as follows:

6.30: Lantern parade gathers on St Mary’s Street

7.00: Lantern parade departs

7.15: Lantern parade begins to arrive on Broad Street.

7.30: Age of Wonder performance begins

8pm Performance ends.

Please note that this is not a school run event and staff will only be present as spectators.

Swimming Lessons Update

We would just like to confirm a few details around swimming lessons for this year. During Terms 1 and 2, children from Fine class will be given the opportunity to swim. Parents of children in Year 3, (Fine class), have been sent letters regarding their children’s swimming abilities. Year 4 have only been sent letters regarding swimming if they need to continue with swimming following on from last year. Assessments were completed on Year 4 children during last year’s sessions and if they were able to complete the assessments they do not need to continue with lessons this year. Strong class will swim in Terms 3 and 4 and Dahl class will swim in Terms 5 and 6. Letters for these two classes will be sent closer to their time of swimming.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact school.
