Dear Stamford Community,

As the new Administrator for Adult & Continuing Education programs for the city of Stamford, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I am Maritza Garcia and I have worked for the Stamford Public Schools for the last 22 years. During this time I have been an educator of English Language Learners working with students, teachers, parents, and com-munity organizations as the New Arrivals Facilitator and as the Program Director for English as a Second Language.

The Adult Education High School Credit Diploma is the same as a diploma awarded by Connecticut public high schools. The requirements for graduation are equivalent. The student must amass twenty credits. They are:

• 4 English • 2 Science • 3 Math • 1 Art or vocational • 3 Social Studies • 7 Electives

(including American History and Civics)

Each class meets for two hours twice a week. Credits can be accumulated by previ-ous educational experience, vocational and life experience. Online classes are offered.

If possible, bring your high school transcript to registration. It will make it easier to assign you to the courses that you need in order to fulfill the requirements for graduation.

This program provides an opportunity to prepare for the Connecticut General Educational Development (GED) examination.

Instruction is encouraged. When you register for classes, a placement test will be administered. Based on the results, you will be assigned to an appropriate ABE/GED instructional level or told to register for the State exam.

The National ExternalDiploma Program is a high school program for mature adults who have acquired their academic skills through life and work experience. Participants in this program must dem-onstrate their skills through the successful completion of a series of assignments. Candidates must complete these assignments with 100% accuracy. This is an opportunity for candidates to work independently while maintaining weekly appointments with their EDP advisor/assessor.

004 MASTERING PEN & INKPen and ink is a drawing medium that has fascinat-ed and inspired artists for centuries. We’ll take you step by step through vari-ous techniques of drawing in ink, including building tones, value studies, kinds

of outlines and their uses, drawing objects in light and shade and handling groups of objects. By the end of the course you will also be able to use pen and ink techniques in com-bination with other media, such as watercolor, gouache, pastels and colored pencils. For first class bring pencil, smooth paper for pens or bristol, and fine drawing pen or Rapidograph. 001 STUDIO ART The relaxed environment of this class encourages creativity in beginning to advanced students. Individual instruction is provided at each student’s level in the medium of his or her choice which helps students achieve their greatest potential while developing a personal style. We explore drawing and composi-

tion, color theory, technique and problem solving. There is a comfortable dialogue between demonstrations made and positive critiques held for those who wish to participate. The teacher’s philosophy is that creating art should be challenging but pleasurable and rewarding. Learn the varied pos-sibilities of line, shape, shading and composition, as well as negative and positive space. Develop your personal style, whether a beginner or experienced artist. 003 OIL PAINTINGWe will take an organized approach to oil painting—color and proper layout of color on the palette will be reviewed along with a discussion of various mediums, brushes, palette knives and surfaces to paint on. Using limited color palettes, color mixing will be explored as we learn about color and value. Painting will be from still

life setups. 007 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHYUnravel the mysteries of digital cameras! Know what to look for when purchasing a digital camera and other “digital darkroom” acces-sories. Learn general techniques helpful in taking digital pictures and

editing your photos. Particular emphasis is placed on basic techniques of image editing and manipula-tion. Ownership of a digital camera is not required, and many students find this introductory class ideal for learning the benefits of digital photography and understanding the advantages it provides over film. 010 THE WORLD OF CLASSICAL BALLETA behind-the-scenes look at the ballet world, includ-ing a demonstration of ballet vocabulary, partnering technique between the ballerina and her premier danseur, costuming, and Pointe work. 027 DATA MANAGEMENT AND ANALYSIS WITH ExCELThis course aims to help manage and make sense of lists and tables of data in Excel spreadsheets. GENERAL INFORMATION

SENIOR CITIzEN DISCOUNT

Senior Citizens, 62 years or older, are entitled to a 25% discount on those courses with a symbol.

WITHDRAWALS • REFUNDSTUITION CREDITS

A refund will be given if we receive written notification prior to the first class. Tuition credit will be issued if written notification is received before the second class.

Exceptions are:

Single Session Classes – No tuition credits

Restaurant Classes – No refunds or tuition credits

Tennis – No refunds or tuition credits

Ice Skating – No refunds or tuition credits

Instructor-Facilitated Online Courses – With-drawals and transfer requests accepted only up to 7 days after the start date of the class in which you are enrolled.

Fees listed include a $10 registration fee which is not refundable.

As a general rule, if day school is closed because of stormy weather, night school will also be closed. In case of cancellation of night classes because of snow or bad weather, tune into WSTC (1400 AM), WKHL (96.7 FM), TV News 12 or the website www.stamfordpublicschools.org or call our office after 4:00 pm for a recorded message.
