Fit in body and mind

We wish all our Olympic athletes well and hope it will turn out to be a truly amazing Games. Many Stamfordians will be going down and watching the events, and there are many who have volunteered as ‘Games Makers’ who will be helping out with various aspects of the running of the Games.

In this issue we celebrate health & well being; and if the Olympics encourages us to do anything, hopefully it will be to take more exercise. I’m not sure if it has ever been proven properly, but one hardly needs proof – the fitter you are the more you can relish life’s everyday challenges. Fit in body, fit in mind!

So here’s to going to the gym, that little bit more walking, swimming or running more, letting your dog drag you that little bit further along its favourite route, taking up a team sport, whatever tickles your fancy.

STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012 5

Sarah was sponsored by Rick Stein to the Guild of Food Writers, the professional

association of food writers, authors, journalists and broadcasters in the UK, in 2006. As a member of the Guild of Food Writers Sarah is regularly invited to fascinating food workshops and events, the most recent of which was the Feeding the Millions: Food at the 2012 Games, at Imperial College London. Guest speakers Jan Matthews and Jeni Pearce delivered a spectacularly thought-provoking talk.

This will be the first Olympic Games ever with a food policy and it is Jan Matthews, Head of Catering, Cleaning and Waste for LoCoG who is spearheading the Olympic food vision. “This will be the biggest and most complex peacetime catering operation in the world,” says Jan. The 2012 London Games will be a tastier, healthier, greener games celebrating the great diversity and quality of British food delivered at affordable prices. Every menu has been tasted and every dish priced.

MacDonald’s, a company that Jan has huge respect for, are a corporate sponsor of the games, and committed to sourcing British

chicken (Red Tractor standard). They will provide only 10% of the food to spectators with British producers supplying much of the rest. Local producers were invited to a ‘meet the buyers day’, where contractors did a blind tasting. One of these unbranded success stories is cupcake makers Frost & Snow, based in Birmingham. Contractors were impressed by their product and story where homeless people have been given a chance at employment in an effort to turn their lives around.

Jan went on to say, “I know people are at the Games for the sport but actually what we want them to say is that the curry we had was great too!” Food served right across the games is going to be healthy and inviting. Jan’s food vision has become a reality where the link between food and sport will become a lasting legacy of the Games.

Feeding the athletesOur second speaker was Guild member Jeni Pearce, Head of Performance nutrition for the English institute of Sport and Catering Advisor to the BoA. A chef, dietician, nutritionist and teacher, Jeni along with 15 other nutritionists, has the great responsibility of fine-tuning the athletes. “We are feeding the ‘elite athlete’,” says Jeni. “We take it strongly as a science. Of all the sciences, nutrition may have more to offer the athlete than any other as it is clear that a poor diet will prevent the athlete from achieving their

potential.” She went on to say, “The athletes are human machines. One kilo can make a crucial difference to performance results.” Nutrients

play a big role in the diet of the 2012 Olympian making the relationship between Jeni and the Camp GB chefs a critically important one. Jeni explained that the athletes’ menus are trying to take advantage of the latest science as it relates to diet, where antioxidants (lots of vegetables), black current powders, Vitamin C, Omega 3 and plenty of hydration are essentials. The Team GB holding camp is in Loughborough. Here, Jeni will have helped many first time

Olympians adjust to the environment of being in the camp where she and the other nutritionists oversee the individual diets of every athlete.

Jeni is hopeful that this commitment to nutrition, food and food hygiene will have a knock-on effect for the general public. She and seven other scientists, dieticians and nutritionists have written an 80 page booklet, A Guide to Nutrition and Hydration for Active Healthy Lifestyles, which for her will be a lasting legacy of the Games. The booklet aims to get people thinking more about the food they eat and how eating healthily fine tunes the body.

ReAdy STeAdy GO!Even if you are not sporty you can still look the part. Sally Stillingfleet has found there is more to sports clothing than meets the eye!

As Olivia Newton John’s song ‘Let’s get physical’ came on the radio on the way

to my ‘Sporty photo-shoot’, I thought it was a good omen as I could not have been feeling less in the mood for sporty stuff - the rain had set in, Olympic sized raindrops were falling.

Our spirits were not dampened though, due to the excellent location of Oakham Tennis Club and their two willing tennis coaches (my male

models Ralph and Dan). Rob Dulieu advised us on choosing the right

gear to enhance performance and still look good (the most important part!) “When it comes

to clothes you exercise in, comfort

is vital. Whatever you wear the clothing needs

to wick away moisture; choose performance clothing which allows the body to breathe when performing activities. Go for clothing that dries quickly, holds its shape and feels great to wear. Always seek out a local sports performance shop.

“When exercising in hot weather or indoors you need lightweight outfits. Select tops that fit well but allow you freedom of movement. For cold weather workouts wear clothes that insulate the body yet still wick moisture from it. Dress in layers so that you can peel them off as you warm up. Purchase an insulating fleece jacket or vest as the outermost layer to keep your torso warm.

“Nothing is more important than the shoes your wear, poor footwear can cause biomechanical issues. I would always advise that you buy from a reputable local retailer who can put you through a gait analysis test to determine which shoes suit you best for the type of exercise you wish to perform. Regular exercise will wear down the soles and thus it is advisable to replace your trainers on a regular basis (every 400 -500 miles or so!)”

For months now it seems as if the nation has gone Olympics mad. Never before, it seems, has a sporting event so gripped the nation – and in our area

it’s no different. The Olympic Torch built the anticipation and now here we finally are at the event itself! This region loves the Olympics – and no wonder. At London 2012 a local athlete – gymnast Louis Smith – stands a very real chance of winning a medal. But he won’t be the first, by any means. One of the most famous was an aristocrat, as well as a future MP for Peterborough. David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter. Born in 1905 at Burghley House, he was an outstanding athlete and made his Olympics debut under the name David Burghley in Paris in 1924, where he was eliminated in the 110 metres hurdles. But four years later he won Gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, followed by Silver in the 4x400m relay at the 1932 Los Angeles Games, where he was also fourth in the 400m hurdles and fifth in the 110m hurdles.

In the British Empire Games in 1930 (forerunner of the modern Commonwealth Games), he won Gold medals in the 120 yards hurdles, the 440 yards hurdles and the 4x440 yards relay. Educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge, legend has it that Burghley placed a matchbox on the hurdles when he was practicing, aiming to knock the boxes over with his leading foot without disturbing the hurdles. In 1927, he sprinted around the Great Court at Trinity College in the time it took the college clock to toll 12 o’clock – inspiring the scene in the

film Chariots of Fire, in which Harold Abrahams accomplishes the same feat.

In 1931, Burghley was elected as MP for Peterborough. He also served as president of the Amateur Athletic Association for 40 years, president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation for 30 years and as a member of the International Olympic Committee for 48 years. He was chairman of the organising committee of the 1948 Summer Olympics – the last time they were held in London until this year. He died in 1981. An exhibition of all his sporting and Olympic endeavours is currently on display in Burghley House and is well worth a visit.

As the Olympic Games begins, Dave Phillips looks at famous local Olympics heroes, past and present

David Burghley

Past gloriesSir Peter Scott (1909-89), the son of Captain Scott of the Antarctic, was educated at Oundle School. He was best known as an artist and conservationist and was founder of the World Wildlife Fund, but he was also a successful sportsman. He represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at sailing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, winning a Bronze medal. In his later life he spent many years living in an old lighthouse near the mouth of the River Nene, at Sutton Bridge.

Another famous Oundle School sportsman was Sir Harry Morton Llewellyn (1911-99), who in 1952 won a Gold medal in show jumping at the Helsinki Olympic Games for the British equestrian team, riding his favourite horse, Foxhunter. But one of our best-known local athletes was shot putter Geoff Capes, who with 27 international caps is the most-capped British male athlete of all time. Born in Holbeach, in 1949, throughout the 1970s he was a policeman, based in Peterborough.

The seventh of nine children, Capes represented Lincolnshire at basketball, football and cross-country. But he was best known as a shot putter, who won two Commonwealth Games and two European Championships. In 1972, aged 21, he competed in the Munich Olympics and did not make it past the qualifying round, but he went to the 1976 Montreal Olympics as favourite for the Gold medal. He finished a disappointing sixth overall. In 1980 he again went into the Olympics a – this time in Moscow – as favourite, but this time finished fifth, even though the winner’s putt of 21.35m was short of Capes’ British record of 21.55m, set in Wales earlier that year. Capes said afterwards that the result left him “numbed with disappointment”. In the 1980s, Capes turned professional and concentrated on the televised strongman events, for which he became a household name. He’d missed out on Olympics glory, but he won the World’s Strongest Man competition in 1983 and 1985.

Recent winnersA local athlete who didn’t miss out was Paul Barber, who was born in Peterborough in 1955. A legendary hockey player, he won Gold with the British squad at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Four years earlier, at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he had won a Bronze medal with the team. In a career that spanned over 25 Years, Barber won 99 caps for England and 68 for Great Britain. He retired from international hockey in 1988 and now lives in Bath with his wife and three sons. (See also our article on Colin Dale, Stamford hockey Olympian, on Page 38)

Britain’s most successful Paralympic swimmer of all time was also born in

Peterborough. Chris Holmes won nine swimming gold medals, four silver and one bronze in four Games. Now Director of Paralympic Integration at the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, he returned to the city earlier this year to

examine disabled sporting facilities in the city and encourage local athletes. Visiting Peterborough Sailability at Ferry Meadows, he said: “I was born in Peterborough, and it is great to come back here. Projects like this give disabled people the chance to come and try out sport. It is not only encouraging people to have a go at the grass roots, but also the chance for people to get into the national team, and maybe become Paralympians of the future.”

Ferry Meadows also happens to be the place where Olympian Nick Dempsey learned to sail. Nick, who was raised in Peterborough, finished 16th in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but took Bronze in Athens 2004 to become the first Briton to win an Olympics windsurfing medal. Now living in Weymouth, he finished fourth in the 2008 Beijing Games.

The Great Olympic Garden Party

For those who want to watch the Olympics in a spectacular setting, Burghley will be throwing The Great Olympic Garden Party every day during the London Games With the Elizabethan house as the backdrop, Burghley’s normally closed private South Gardens will host a Big Screen, showing TV coverage from Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August - and included for free with a normal house and gardens ticket.

Access to the screen will be available 10am to 10pm, last admission 6pm, with special film night tickets after 6pm at a reduced rate. A special Olympic Pass will also be available covering the whole period which will be given as wristbands in the colours of the Olympic Rings.

A summer evening festival of outdoor screenings will feature four special film nights, launching on Sat 28th July at 7pm with iconic sports movie Chariots of Fire, followed by three other movie screenings: Pride and Prejudice on Wed 1st Aug, The Full Monty on Thur 2nd Aug and Mamma Mia on Fri 3rd Aug.See www.burghley.co.uk for more details and to book tickets

Geoff Capes

We’re backing Louis!Great Britain has never been noted for world-class gymnasts. But all that could change at London 2012 thanks to local Gold hopeful, Louis Smith. Born in Peterborough in 1989, Louis was a hyperactive child, according to his mother, Elaine Petch. He never crawled, but was running before he was a year old. He had broken his arm twice before the age of three, thanks to his love of climbing chairs and tables and launching himself into the air.

To keep him out of mischief, Elaine enrolled him for gymnastics at the age of four, with his elder brother Leon. Within two years, the coach at the club told her that her son showed talent and recommended she took them to a club in Huntingdon. Here, Louis thrived under legendary coach Paul Hall. By the time he was 15, he was the European junior champion on pommel horse. And four years after that he won Bronze at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Previously, as a junior, he had been a two-time European Champion on pommel horse,

in 2004 and 2006. He won Gold on pommel horse for England at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, and in 2007 he came fourth at the European Championships. His success in Beijing meant he was the first Briton to win a medal in the individual gymnastics at the Olympic Games since Walter Tysall – exactly a century earlier, in 1908. He was also only the second black male gymnast to win an Olympics medal.

No wonder Smith returned from China to star treatment. But he hasn’t let the adulation go to his head. Now 23, he lives in Eye and trains harder than ever. “I’m going for gold this year,” he says. “I can’t get anything less and I don’t want silver now. Silver is just a shinier bronze - gold is the only option. To win gold would be unbelievable. I don’t like to think too much about it because that heaps the pressure on, but to know that you have reached a pinnacle, that you are the best in the world at what you are doing - it would just be a dream come true.”

“Regardless if I’ve won gold or whatever, I want to walk away from the competition happy and know that the 19 years of hard work I’ve put in, and all the sacrifices that everyone else made, I want to know that that 50 seconds on pommel horse was worth it.”

RenaissanceThis month Renaissance is celebrating 18 years in business

At Renaissance, Fiona has invested her time and undertaken training in excellent high tech treatments. She is highly

trained (28 years as a Beauty Therapist in total) and passionate about delivering superb results, driven by the breakthroughs her treatments make and the efficiency of the products and technologies she uses.

“There is a place for the relaxing delightful smelling facial, of course that’s lovely, but my interest is in making changes to people’s skin – I want results,” she explained in her tiny tucked away salon.

Fiona has been doing Caci Ultra for four years now but that’s not where she stops - she incorporates microdermabrasion pre-Caci and responds to what she thinks the skin’s needs are. Such is her experience and understanding her facials are truly prescriptive and no two are the same. The IPL machine has just been upgraded and is the only one in Stamford to be able to deal with pigmentation, skin rejuvenation and thread veins as well as hair removal. She has been getting spectacular results from courses of Derma roller treatments, which is a hour-long treatment incorporating skin rejuvenation as well.

She has just taken on Medik8, a UK cosmeceutical brand with green credentials. Their regime is based on products packed full of peptides, antioxidant technologies, vitamin C and scientifically proven botanicals. They have excellent take home products to use in conjunction with regular facials but as Fiona told me “better to invest in good quality products to use at home rather than just one facial a month!” Medik8 is also affordable, has anti-ageing built in SPF’s, fruit acids, retinol serums and has an excellent salon chemical peel treatment.

No-needle mesotherapy is the non-invasive alternative to injectables also getting excellent results using Ultra sound, pushing product through to the dermal layers of the skin. Of course there is still room for traditional treatments such as Electrolysis, waxing and body treatments. French skincare range Guinot is still a favourite and Fresh Minerals make-up. It’s clear to see expertise at it’s very best and the finest products and technologies, working alongside. Clearly a lovely lady with a passion for results and a superior wealth of beauty knowledge.

16 STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012

LOCAL NEWS A TASTE of SoUTh AfricA…South Africa is incredibly diverse and is sometimes described as the last paradise on earth. Each individual country contrasts with the next and should feature at the top of every traveller’s wish list. For those who enjoy outstanding hospitality combined with spectacular scenery, there isn’t a more civilised destination.

For those who seek warmth from November through until April this region is the perfect destination and is a particular favourite amongst those who want to celebrate a special occasion in style, or for families who would like to introduce children to African wildlife as part of a relaxed tailor made itinerary.

Oundle Travel has many years of experience creating itineraries with just the right balance of duration, together with a wide range of hotels. Many visitors will spend four or five days in Cape Town before journeying through quaint villages and seaside towns along the Garden Route, further up the coast and into the Eastern Cape, in search of a safari experience. Viewing wild animals in their natural habitat is quite simply thrilling and there are many ways to experience this.

For those wanting an introductory tour of South Africa’s Cape region, Oundle Travel’s – 7 nights ‘Taste of South Africa’ tour flies directly into Cape Town with British Airways and is available as a Private Escorted Journey or a Self-Drive from £1895.00 per person.

For those wanting a superb safari experience The Great Botswana Safari’ is a privately escorted journey offering the chance to explore some of the most remote and pristine wilderness areas in Africa. The journey takes in The Chobe National Park and the exceptionally beautiful Okavango Delta. From £3160.00 per person for 9 nights inclusive of British Airways flights.

Whether you wish, to sample delicious wines in Stellenbosch, or view the ‘Big Five’ as you relax in your private pool high above the bush and then relax on a pristine Mauritian beach, Oundle Travel would be delighted to share their personal experiences of South Africa with you and help you plan your perfect holiday.• Oundle Travel, Market Place, Oundle Tel: 01832 273600 www.oundletravel.co.uk

BooT cAmp BliTz! Sally Stillingfleet rather nervously accepted the assignment to go and check out Stamford’s very own Boot camp and to find out what it was all about

At the start everyone stands around looking equally nervous in the new premises in the old Language School; but the hour long session soon gets going and we are stationed according to the forms we have already filled in about fitness levels and even competitiveness ( 5 or 6? ) to make sure the weights we are to use are suitable.

I really like the variety of exercise done in short intense bursts, with a 20 second breather, thankfully. My partner Sarah and I get a fit of the giggles with the ‘towel shaking’ exercise in pairs (enough said!) and towards the end there’s a group exercise which is silly but immense fun.

The good news is I am still here to tell the tale and chat to two Veterans Peter and Nikki. They both started with Rob’s sessions on the Meadows and have been consistent in their training two or three times a week. Now they have reaped the rewards, in terms of fitness levels and both have lost weight ( a stone and 2 stone respectively!) “The gym was boring,” Nikki explained. “I am far more self motivated now, Rob spurs you on!”

“Rob has a holistic view on fitness and has a talent for getting the best out of everyone. The classes are a diverse mix of all ages and abilities and no two sessions are ever the same,” Peter told me.

Both Nikki and Peter agreed on the winning formula of exercise variety, sense of humour and the feeling of there being a group bond, which is so important. I can see why they have stuck at it; it bucks the trend of a traditional gym and is so much fun to try. www.stamfordpersonalfitness.co.uk Tel: 07846 457959 Monday – Friday 9.30-10.30am

ryhAll primAry SchoolRyhall primary School write: “Here in Ryhall, we were so surprised to hear that some people in Stamford had not heard about how well our school in Ryhall has been doing, that we decided to write a report about our Olympic celebrations.

“Throughout 2012, the whole school has enjoyed many whole school ‘inter-house’ challenges; painting replicas of the nations’ flags, making working Olympic Torches, the first ‘Space Hopper’ Olympics and we were really excited to see the Olympic torch on Rutland Water where we won the Rutland Schools’ competition for best school Olympic banner!

“We recently enjoyed an Olympics week! As well as our Sport’s Day, (which did not get spoilt by rain!) we have been learning about the Olympic venues. Fun learning has included; reconstruction of historic Olympic events, building models of venues, redesigning Olympic Mascots, mapping host cities and origami Olympic rings! Y5 passed their ‘Bikeability’ awards, getting inspiration from the biographies of our British cycling team. Year 4 have even followed the training routines of Team G.B’s rowing team using computer animation!

“So now you know a bit about us. You are always welcome to visit us; perhaps look at our Olympics display in September or, even better, remember to invite us to enter some of your competitions and celebrations.”

HEALTH & FITNESS

STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012 19

GETTING FIT IN 2012With August the month for athletic endeavour, Alysia Anderson puts some local exercise options through their paces

Exercise brings numerous health benefi ts, from improved sleep

to a boosted immune system. The key is to fi nd an activity you enjoy and can do regularly. If you exercise with other people, you’re also more likely to persevere.

ON THE BALLBall sports such as hockey, rugby, netball, cricket and football inspire both fi tness and team spirit, making them great social sports. Most clubs have junior and senior teams and many offer coaching for both sexes. For footie, there’s Stamford Football Club (www.stamfordafc.net) and Blackstones Football Club (www.blackstones.org.uk). Also based at Blackstones Sports Club is the Stamford Netball League, now in its third decade and still going strong. Rugby players from under-fi ves to ‘vets’ are welcome at the Stamford Rugby Club (www.pithero.com/clubs/stamford) while Bourne Hockey Club (www.bournedeepinghc.co.uk) has thriving senior, junior and youth teams. There’s still enough summer left for a few wickets at Stamford Town Cricket Club (www.stamford.play-cricket.com ) and Burghley Cricket Club (www.burghleypark.com ), both family-friendly clubs.

BEST FOOT FORWARDRunning helps to strengthen bones and improve the cardiovascular system. All you need is a pair of trainers, comfortable jogging clothes and some motivation. To help with the last bit, there are numerous running clubs in the area, including Nene Valley Harriers (www.nvh.org.uk), Bourne Town Harriers (www.bournetownharriers.org), Werrington Joggers (www.werringtonjoggers.co.uk), Yaxley Runners (www.yaxleyrunners.org.uk), Bushfi eld Joggers www.bushfi eldjoggers.co.uk) and of course our own Stamford Striders (www.stamfordstriders.co.uk). All are relaxed clubs

that welcome novices of various ages and abilities, competitive or not. For those who want to add swimming and cycling to the mix, join the training at Stamford Tri Club (www.stamfordtriclub.co.uk) or Rutland Running and Triathlon Club (www.rutlandrunandtri.co.uk).

SERVICE WITH A SMILEWimbledon may be over but Stamford Tennis Club (www.stamfordtennis.co.uk) welcomes players of all levels and runs various coaching sessions for children and adults. Rusty Rackets is a sociable way to improve your game and get fi t or, for a harder workout, try Cardio Tennis. Head Coach Carole Wilson says “We wear heart rate monitors which tell you how many calories you’re burning. It’s very popular as you can see the result of your efforts straight away.” For lawn tennis, the Stamford Rock Tennis Club (www.rocktennisclub.org) has a trio of grass courts available from April to September. If you’d prefer to thwack a smaller ball, Stamford Squash Club (www.stamfordsquashclub.org.uk) is based at Stamford School but is open to local players of all ages, whether for fun, fi tness or competition.

ON YOUR BIKECycling is a brilliant way both to get fi t and see the countryside. Rutland Cycling (www.rutlandcycling.com) has bikes for sale and hire, plus route maps if you want to explore the local lanes as well as the 23-mile circuit of the reservoir. There’s also a sister centre at

Fineshade Woods with its network of woodland trails. If you fancy joining a cycling club, Velo Club Rutland (www.veloclubrutland.org.uk) and Bourne Wheelers (www.bournewheelers.wordpress.com) run regular group bike rides and races in the area and also offer coaching for children.

MAKE A SPLASHWith England’s largest reservoir on our doorstep there’s plenty of opportunity to get fi t on the water. Sailing, windsurfi ng and canoeing are just a few of the activities available at Rutland Water (www.anglianwater.co.uk/leisure) with tuition, including RYA-level courses, offered for adults and children.

FEEL THE RHYTHMThe latest fi tness craze is Zumba, a high-energy workout that uses a mix of music and steps inspired by Latin rhythms. It’s not just fantastic exercise but also boosts your confi dence as there’s plenty of shimmying required, Rio Carnival-style. Visit www.zumbafi tness.co.uk and you’ll fi nd dozens of classes in and around Stamford. Venues range from village halls to Westside Gym (www.westsideclub.co.uk) and ladies-only Curves (www.curves.co.uk). The latter offers a 30-minute Zumba circuit of resistance machines to improve cardio fi tness and muscle strength.

PUT THE BOOT INPersonal trainer Rob Dulieu (www.stamfordpersonalfi tness.co.uk) set up Stamford Boot Camp last summer to offer a sociable, dynamic and fun way to get fi t. “My aim is to provide instruction that motivates people to perform to their optimum level”. Sessions take place on the Meadows in good weather and include exercises and drills to lose fat and improve stamina, strength and body shape (see out longer review on Page 16)

LOCAL BusINEssa FrEsh Look For t & C roBINsoNT & C Robinson of St Mary’s Street has recently undergone a shop transformation and now as a result have an even smarter looking retail space. With a new wooden floor, the front of the shop has a much lighter, airier feel and with the luggage now easily accessible a fabulous leather showroom has been created. The traditional aspects of the gorgeous Georgian building still remain but with this modern twist it has a much more welcoming feel.

The clothing, footwear and accessories department has been moved to the rear of the shop to easily allow for that country lifestyle look to be created. The refit coincides with the completion of transforming from a saddlery to a leathergoods shop and now T & C Robinson are no longer an equestrian retailer here in Stamford. Whilst still stocking exactly the same range of clothing, including brands such as Dubarry, Barbour, Aigle and Sherwood Forest to name a few, the essence of T & C Robinson remains ever unchanging and our favourite family independent retailer continues to thrive. • T & C Robinson, 4 St Mary’s St, Stamford. BACK TO SCHOOL

There’s nothing worse than dragging out undersized shoes, mouldy lunchboxes and out-of-season sports kits on the first day of term. Here’s the comprehensive guide to your Back To School essentials. By Charlotte Newby

UNIFORMHigh quality uniform for school children of all ages can now be bought from Bubble and Squeak on the High Street. While they don’t claim to match supermarket prices, their range is by no means expensive (typically £7 for primary school trousers). And unlike supermarkets, they have a good selection all year round. If the size you need is not in stock, they can usually get what you need within a week. For primary school children there’s always a stock of polo shirts (navy, white, gold and red), grey trousers for boys and girls, sweatshirts in blue, maroon and green, grey

shorts, summer dresses in a variety of colours and tunics. For secondary

age there are white and blue school shirts and

blouses plus trousers and skirts in black, grey and navy, plus

black blazers. You’ll also find a whole range of tights and

socks available. Shop from the middle of July to early September and get a whopping 25% off all school uniform.

The Stamford Endowed Schools Shop sells all items of uniform, accessories and a wide range of sports equipment specific to the school. Parents purchasing uniform for the first time are advised to make an appointment.

SPORTS KITForget traipsing to Peterborough or Leicester, Scarlet Sky on St Mary’s Street has a whole first floor dedicated to sports equipment and will be ready for the winter season with Canterbury rugby essentials: boots, protection and base layers, and Gilbert balls and boots. There’s also hockey gear by Grays, shin guards, trainers and running spikes. LUNCH BOXES & WATER BOTTLESIf younger children need enticing back to school at the beginning of a new year, I’ve found that a new lunchbox works a treat. As far as most children are concerned, it’s what’s on the outside that matters! Harrison and Dunn always stocks a wide selection of lunch boxes and water bottles at reasonable prices, and Lambs kitchenware has new ranges in for boys and girls this summer. Sinclairs does a good line in water bottles including fun Mr Men and Little Miss designs. And for all those teachers who’ll be back to school too, there’s a particularly appropriate ‘Keep Calm and Drink Tea’ insulated ceramic travel mug, just for them!

SHOESWe’re fortunate enough to have several shoe shops dedicated to selling quality shoes and offering unrivalled customer service.

Marcia May has a whole room dedicated to children’s shoes. Their range includes the ever-popular Ricosta, Biomecanics and Hush Puppies, plus Geox and Vivobarefoot. Starting with a tiny size 6.5 for school starters, their range goes up to girls’ size 7 and boys’ size 9. Expert fitters will help you find the perfect shoe for your child. While you’re on your way through to the children’s section, you might want to take a look at their gorgeous shoes for women – the sale is still on to make space for all the lovely new Autumn stock that’s already started to arrive and which will continue to do so daily until October.

North Shoes is a family business that’s been selling shoes since 1876. Their original shop is in Bourne, there’s a sister shop ‘Footprints’ in Peterborough, and our local store is on Red Lion Square. Their range of children’s shoes includes Clarks, Ricosta and Startrite. They are children’s fitting specialists who are genuinely knowledgeable and unfailingly patient.

Also on Red Lion Square, Clarks has just undergone a makeover and in mid-July re-opened with its latest shop design. It’s now all sparkling and ready just in time for the back to school season, with a brand new range of school shoes in a wide choice of sizes up to 9 for girls and 10.5 for boys. You can also buy online with free delivery and free returns.

POINTS OF INTERESTBRAUNSTON - All Saints’ Church dates back to the 13th century. It is notable for its medieval wall-paintings and odd-looking clock face. As you pass the west end of the church you will see a pagan fi gure standing at the foot of the tower. Theories abound as to what it signifi es or exactly how old it is.

Immediately beside the church is an open access area, where there is evidence of a medieval ridge and furrow fi eld system and possibly a water mill and dam. There is a helpful information board a few yards down Wood Lane, just south of the church.THE RIVER GWASH fl ows to the south of the village. This sinuous stream subsequently runs into Rutland Water and then on to Ryhall before taking a big loop and joining the River Welland to the east of Stamford.

DIRECTIONS

1Cross over the stile at the west end of the church (the right-hand path), walking in a westerly direction close to the right edge of

the fi eld. Cross a ditch and then the diminutive River Gwash over a footbridge.

2 Once over the river, follow a broad track between two fi elds as far as a gate. Once through the gate, you will soon pass South Lodge

Farm on your right hand side. At the end of a long, thin strip of a fi eld, cross to the other side of the tiny stream and follow it on the other side to the end of the next fi eld.

3 At this point the path cuts diagonally across the fi eld (a tiny pond on your

immediate left) to a stile in the far left-hand corner under an ash-tree, but most people appear to walk around the right hand side and then up. Once over this stile, head across a fi eld (wet in winter) towards an opening at the top of the hill.

4 At this point you get fi ne views of the Chater Valley to the south. Join the

bridleway and head right (north), until you reach a road

5 Take the right hand path (there are two), which crosses a fi eld to another road.

Turn right onto the road, and at the T-junction cross over on to the bridleway opposite. Stay on this bridleway, and do not be tempted by fi rst a path and then a bridleway that branch off to the left. The route is heading north east.

6 Cross the River Gwash again via a footbridge, then up a track and across

a road, continuing to head NE, through two further gates and up a hill

7 At a gate on the right, you will see the bridleway heading across a grassy

pasture. Towards the end of the second fi eld, a gate takes you into a green lane heading south back to Braunston. Turn right when you reach the road, and you will soon be back at the start.

EYEBROOK RESERVOIRJean Orpin and Sue Lee recommend a visit to Eyebrook. It was made by damming the Eye Brook, a tributary of the River Welland, and was the largest stretch of water in Rutland before Rutland Water was created

HistoryEyebrook was built for Stewarts and Lloyds who moved the headquarters of their iron and steel company to Corby from Scotland in 1932, to enable them to take advantage of the ironstone of the area. Many of their Scottish workforce came and there is still a strong Scottish presence in Corby. Stewarts and Lloyds was nationalised in 1967 and closed in 1980. During this time they produced 2.5 million tons of steel. The company produced pipes that carried fuel under the sea for the D Day landings. Steel is still produced in Corby by Corus who manage the reservoir today. The reservoir was built between 1937 and 1940 to supply water to the steel works. Six million gallons of water were required each day for the steel works. The capacity was increased in 1955 and it now covers 400 acres. The new reservoir played a part in the Second World War when it was used by 617 Squadron, known colloquially as The Dambusters, to practise low-level bombing by the Lancasters prior to the raids on the Eder and Mohne dams in Germany in 1943. There are plaques on the wall of the dam to record this event and a display in the Fishing Lodge.

FishingEyebrook is an attractive venue for fi shermen as it is quiet and peaceful with no other water-based activities and is well stocked with trout. It is restricted to fl y fi shing. Over 20,000 trout are caught annually, which are reared in the fi shponds nearby. Fishermen compete with kingfi shers, ospreys and otters for their catch. The wildlife societies monitor and record sightings of all wildlife including birds, insects and fl owers.

BirdsAs soon as it was built the reservoir became a haven for wildlife and by 1956 was declared to be a Site of Special Scientifi c Interest which means that it is now managed within Natural England guidelines for all wild life. Eye Brook is a wonderful place to see migrating birds as they stop off to feed and rest on the journey north in the spring and south in the autumn. When they are travelling south they tend to stop off

for longer, and have their young with them, so from the end of August onwards through the winter there are birds to see. The water is quite close to the road with grazing between the two so you can see widgeons a stone’s throw away. During the winter thousands of waders like golden plovers can be seen on the muddy edges near the bridge, where the Eye Brook fl ows into the reservoir. The gull roosts are famous and songbirds like wheatears and yellow wagtails drop in on their journey from Africa. Ospreys are fairly regular visitors and little owls nest in the trees near the bridge. The birds have been monitored by the Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society since the reservoir was formed and various projects carried out to encourage birds. Rutland Natural History Society also carries out some recording.

Stoke DryStoke Dry is the small, attractive village that sits above the reservoir. It was the property of the Digby family closely implicated in the Gunpowder Plot – it has been said the plot was hatched here. Whether or not this was so, the church has many interesting features worth visiting. AccessThe reservoir lies on the boundary between Leicestershire and Rutland, two miles south of Uppingham. Take the A6003 south out of Uppingham, then turn right onto the minor road to Stoke Dry after a mile and a half. This road continues down the hill and round the north-west half of the reservoir. There is also a small parking area so that you can take a walk but as it is a Site of Special Scientifi c Interest it is not a good choice for taking the dog for a walk. You can park carefully anywhere along the road, taking care not to block fi eld gateways or obstruct other traffi c. There is a road round the reservoir that enables you to see the wildlife from the car. If you are a member of the Rutland Natural History Society or the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust you can receive permission to enter the private areas of the Eyebrook which are closed to the public.

BURGHLEY SCULPTURE GARDENA visit to Burghley Sculpture Garden’s new exhibition may involve a walk on the wild side, as Flora and Fauna explores the animal and plant kingdoms through the sculptor’s eye. A menagerie of beasts stalk the gardens, whilst fl oral apparitions bloom throughout. Highlights include the work of Jerwood sculpture prize winner Benedict Carpenter, along with Sally Matthews’ Horse and Dog. Her working animals appear on the brink of exhaustion, having evidently endured a long day on the hoof.

Intriguing parallels exist between the vitality of the animal sculptures present and the contribution of Mike Dodd, who has propagated a living sculpture. His Living Willow Tunnel is weaved from willow, and incites the viewer to move through it, as well as simply looking. It is a dynamic work that will grow and change with the seasons and may in turn become host to other climbing plants. Similarly, Laura Patacchia’s Drosera appears to be in a mortal struggle for pre-eminence with its host lime tree.

As well as a direct exploration of animals and plants, another recurring theme in the show is Man’s treatment of the natural world and its resources through works that reconfi gure man-made products and waste. The gardens are open daily from 11-5pm with last entry at 4.30. The exhibition runs until October 28th. www.burghley.co.uk

PERSPECTIVES

STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012 35

THE TORCH ROUTEOn July 3rd the Olympic Torch was carried through the historic streets of Stamford. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee followed its route

After the Enclosure Act, 1871 it was possible to build houses outside the town walls. Large middle class houses were built. These were popular as they had very good views over the Welland valley and were away from the cramped conditions in the town.

Since the Middle Ages a road has run just outside the town wall between St Peter’s and St Paul’s St. This was an industrial area in the 19C. Jeffrey and Blackstone were here before moving to Ryhall Road and so were Hayes and Son, Wagon and Carriage Builders.

Until 1960 this was part of the Great North Road carrying a great deal of traffi c. There were a number of inns and public houses. Truesdale and Snowden both endowed an almshouse for the poor on this street. Stamford Fire Station was here, now the car park.

A market was held here before 1066. It is named after an Inn which closed in the early 18th century. In the 14th century there were permanent market stalls. A market is still held here on Saturday. The square was paved recently and a milestone placed to mark the sites of Eleanor Crosses.

This was the main street in the 9th century Danish town. The meat market and the fi sh market were held here. It has been the main commercial street since the 18th century. St Michael’s church is now commercial premises. National retailers have replaced the family run shops.

In the 13th century Oxford students tried to set up a rival university here. They brought the knocker from the gate at Brazenose College. It was fi nally returned to Oxford and a replica can be seen on an old gateway.

St Paul’s StThis was the main street east from the earliest times. St Paul’s church (now the school chapel) became Stamford Grammar School in the 16th century. The Norris family who were well known bell founders had premises here.

Wharf RoadThis road takes its name from the buildings formerly standing along the river when it was navigable. It was always an industrial area. The arch which belonged to Grant’s Iron foundry remains and Gas Lane is a reminder of the gasworks erected in 1824.

High St S Martin’sThis street is the entry to the town from the South. The fi rst bridge was built in the 10th century. The George Hotel was a large coaching inn where coaches changed horses on their journey from London to York. Memorials to the Cecils are in St Martin’s Church.

STAMFORD PEOPLE

COLin DALe:OlympiAn ReflecTiOnS

In this most sporting of summers many of you too will also be forgetting the weather

and its vagaries to be transfixed, for two-and-a-half weeks, in your living rooms, by athletes and cyclists, boxers and rowers, swimmers and sailors. In case it has somehow escaped your notice the sporting fever which usually characterises English summers reached its pinnacle this year with the opening of the Olympic Games on the last Friday in July. Some of you may have experienced just a little of it first-hand, here in Stamford, in the great outdoors as the Olympic flame passed through our small town on Tuesday 3 July.

To get more of an inside track on the Olympic experience I chatted to Colin Dale, who took part not only in the 1956 Melbourne Games, but also in the 1960 Rome Olympics playing hockey for Great Britain.

Dale began, unusually in these times, by praising Mr Murdoch. “I bless the day Mr Murdoch launched Sky Sports,” he begins before I cajole him back to his own Olympic adventure. Launching into the selection process for the ’56 Games; beginning with trials between the England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales sides to select a GB side and then the Olympic side, he recalls how the GB team beat Germany and was suddenly a contender. Sixteen people were selected to train at Lilleshall in Shropshire; a gift of gratitude from South Africa to the British after the Second World War. He reflects how, in addition to some clothing and inoculations, they were each given as “freebies” one hockey stick each and a bottle of Horlicks! “The Olympics was for amateurs in those days,” he says. “If there was any suggestion that you played sport for money you couldn’t take part.” This sentiment also extended it seems to the training. “It was an amateur sport and the training was amateurish in the extreme,” he tells me. Dale however had other ideas. “I used to train myself, go running etc. to get myself in the best possible condition. I’ve never had a cigarette in my life and never drank until I stopped playing at nearly 30. There was an ethic almost at universities in those days which seemed to say you shouldn’t be seen to be trying too hard.”

The extraordinary “freebie” for Dale however was the journey to and from the games which amounted to a round the world trip. Having secured 6 weeks leave from his job with Hotpoint, he embarked upon the wonderful experience of sport and travel. They set off, he says, from Heathrow the long way round to get to Melbourne, Australia. “Bearing in mind that planes flew around 200/250 miles per hour in those days, it was a long haul,” he says. The journey, which he recites as if it were yesterday, took him from Heathrow to Shannon, Gander (Newfoundland) to New York (where they spent a night and a day, and he went up the Empire State Building), onto Denver, Colorado, San Francisco (where they stayed overnight and played field hockey against one of the university teams). The flight from San Francisco to Hawaii carrying the 100-120 Olympians (a mix of yachters, boxers, hockey players, equestrians and the like) was he recounts quite eventful. On the longest water crossing of the trip for a plane unequipped with water

landing equipment, the plane was one engine down with only three engines operational. For Dale, far from provoking concern, it raised the prospect of a much hoped for party stop in Hawaii, which was sadly not to be. The six day journey, took them instead onwards to Fiji, the Gilbert & Ellis Islands, Sydney and finally Melbourne, their destination.

Having fulfilled his obligation to visit the Hotpoint office in Melbourne (in return for his leave of absence), Dale found himself billeted or settled into the Olympic village; a series of bungalows with shared communal eating areas catering for the many nations represented at the Games. He delights too in recounting the GB Olympic team issue clothing for competitors; shoes, socks, trousers, 2 shirts - in this brand new material called nylon, that drip dried overnight and meant they only needed 2 shirts for the 6 weeks, blazer (into which, he proudly announces, he still fits and that he wore three weeks earlier to an Olympic hockey teams’ get-together at the O2 Arena), plastic mac, a case to carry it all in, and a Panama hat! The hockey kit apparently went separately.

Amid reminiscences of marching to a band in the opening parade ceremony, where everyone goes alphabetically aside from Greece always starting first and the host country last, he breaks off. “We finished 4th”, he says drawing my attention to a frame on the wall. “Generally acknowledged in Olympic circles to be the worst place to finish because you get a paper diploma,” he adds laughing. “Not bad I suppose considering a year before that I didn’t even know I was going.”

Memories of the return journey however soon perk him up; Melbourne to Sydney, Darwin, Singapore (overnight at Raffles hotel and a sweat wringing match in the humidity), Calcutta, Karachi, Basra, Istanbul - the point at which the plane broke down and necessitated Dale spending 3 nights at the Hilton exploring Istanbul before finally flying back to Heathrow. “I found myself at Heathrow, bronzed and just in a blazer. But I’d played in Australia and been around the world.” Dale was around 24 at the time.

Though he went on to play again in the 1960 Rome Games they were as he says, “much closer obviously, and just not as momentous.”
