Author's Introduction:
It must be known that Allah has directed us and you
towards that which He loves as well as that which pleases
Him. Undoubtedly, the Prayer consists of three parts. The first
being that which is vocal, the second part are actions, and the
third are those things which are neither spoken nor performed.
As for those parts of the
Prayer that are spoken, they
include anything that
accompanies the movement
of the tongue. This includes
utterances of glorification ,
praise , and the closing
salutation . As for those parts
of the Prayer which are
considered actions, they are
any movements of the body.
These action include bowing,
prostration , and sitting. As
for those things which are
neither spoken nor
performed, they include
things such as the direction of
prayer , the specified time for
a particular prayer, intention,
and the place of prayer.
It must also be known that all of the spoken portions of the
Prayer are Sunnah exceptthree. The opening glorification, the
recitation of the Fatihah and the closing salutation. As for the
actions that are performed during the Prayer, all of them are
Fareedah except three. The raising of the hands to accompany
the opening glorification, the middle sitting, and the sligh
turning to the right with the closing salutation.
And finally, it must be known as well, that Four are
separable from four, but there are for that cannot be separate
from four. Firstly, the opening glorification is separable from
the raising of the hands. The recitation of the Fatihah i
separable from the Surah
that follows it. The
prostration upon the
forehead is separable from
the prostration upon the
nose. And the closing
salutation is separable from
the turning of the head
Thus these four things are
separable from four others
As for the four things that
cannot be separate from
four, they are the opposites
of what has been
previously mentioned.

Chapter 1:The Obligatory Preconditions of the Prayer.
As for the obligatory preconditions of the prayer, they are five
in number. The First being Islam. [meaning that the individual is a
worshiper who is a part of the group of believers who adhere to the religion of
Islam as practiced by the Community of The Prophet Muhammad ]
Second, having reached legal maturity. [legal maturity for a man
occurs at the time that he attains
puberty, with signs which include
the appearance of hair on the face
and about the private region. There is
no scholarly disagreement about this,
but there is a difference of opinion
regarding the age at which legal
maturity is attained, with the
maximum age being eighteen (18)
years. Legal maturity for a womanoccurs at the first time she
experiences a menstrual cycle. There
is no scholarly disagreement
regarding this.] Third, being in
possession of a sound
intellectual state. Fourth,
being free from the
occurrence of menstrual or
post-natal discharge. And
fifth, the entrance of the
specified time for the specified prayer.
The Muslim who refuses or denies the obligations of the prayer
or aspects of it, such as its bowings or its prostrations, is
considered a disbelieving apostate who should be called upon
to make repentance to Allah. If he repents, he is to be left alone
If he persists and refuses to repent, he is to be punished by
execution. The one who acknowledges the obligation of the
Prayer but refrains from performing it is not considered a
disbeliver but this is not to be accepted, rather, he should be
exhorted to perfrom the prayer up until there remains in the
second prayer time sufficient time to perform a complete unit
of prayer along with its
prostration. If he stil
refuses he should be
threatened and then struck
If he persists, he is to be
executed with a sword
without cursing him. He is
to be prayed upon withou
Imam or Scholar. If the
time for that Prayer has
past or violence occurs it is
more correct not to execute
the individual.
A child should be
commanded to perform the
Prayer at age seven. At age
ten the youth shouldcorprally punished for not performing the prayer in order to
habituate him to this practice.

As for the conditions of the prayers soundness, there are seven.
Firstly, purity from both minor and major ritual impurities.
Second, purity of clothing, body and place of prayer from
material impurites. The place of prayer is considered to be any
thing that comes into contact with the person during standing,
prostration or sitting. As for what is not touched during these
things, there is no harm. It is
permissible to pray upon a
donkey whilst parts of him
may be affected by
impurities. Third, the
covering of the private parts.
Fourth, facing the direction of
prayer. Fifth, the entrance of
the specified time for the
specified prayer. Sixth,
cessation of uneccessary
speech. And Seventh, the
cessation of extraneous movement. This should suffice for the
one whom
Allah has illuminated his inner vision.
