Introduction
In addition to beautifully adorning our worshipspace, stained glass serves an even greater pur-pose. In the same way an icon, or an artifact usedin worship draws us into the transcendent realm;so too, do these “windows into heaven.” Stainedglass windows serve as holy reminders of ourspiritual ancestors, and of the mighty acts of Godthroughout salvation history. As Sacred Scripturereminds us, when we gather to worship the livingGod, “we are surrounded by a great cloud of wit-nesses.” (Hebrews 12:1)
Another fundamental aspect of stained glass isthe dynamic interplay of light and color. Thispenetrating quality of light reminds us of God’sgrace. As natural light through colored glass; sotoo, God’s grace penetrates our souls, transform-ing us through various hues into his image, fill-ing us with Divine light (James 1:17). As thePsalmist so beautifully writes, “For with you isthe fountain of life; in your light, do we seelight” (Psalm 36:9).
