On behalf of the Council of The Sugar Technologists Asso- ciation of India, I express my most sincere gratitude to our esteemed members, sponsors, exhibitors & service providers for not only attending the Convention in large numbers but also making it a grand success and a memorable one. The three day congregation was attended by nearly 800 delegates from across the country and also included international delegates from - Australia, Germany, Kenya, Spain, Sudan, UK, USA etc. The Convention also saw glitterati of guests that comprised ministers, top government officials, bureau- crats, sugar mill entrepreneurs, CEOs, HODs, consultants, technol- ogy providers, research profession- als etc. This year the Indian Sugar Industry will commence its crushing season from October 2017 to tide over the tight domestic supply. Barring the southern states of Tamil Nadu, An- dhra Pradesh and parts of Karna- taka which are facing the worst ever drought in recent times, the monsoon had been good in the key sugar producing states i.e. U.P. and Maharashtra which are likely to contribute two-thirds of the total sugar output in 2017-18. For the first time, the sugar pro- duction in Uttar Pradesh is likely to be over 10 MT as the cane cultiva- tion area has jumped from 2.05 million to 2.3 million hectares. The area under the early varieties of cane has also increased by 13%. With stable sugar prices and an opening sugar stock of 4.2 MT as of October 2017 and anticipated sugar production of 25 MT in sugar season 2017-18 there will be enough sugar to cater to the domestic demand of the country. I wish a successful sugar crush- ing season 2017-18 and Dipawali greetings to all our members.
