Violet opens March 18

A romantic and infectious musical

As I began to study the script for Violet, I thought about words synonymous with travel, journey, and highway. Our lives are jour-neys both physically and emotionally. Some paths we choose and others are placed before us.

We travel with Violet in 1964, as she boards a Greyhound bus from North Carolina to Oklahoma, certain that this course will secure the result she so ercely desires.

In Violet's story, her journey involves that of childhood to adulthood, from an isolated lonely environment into the more populated, socially diverse areas of the country, from naïveté to a greater realization of her own strength and her impact on the lives of others. Perhaps Violet's journey will remind you of your own in some way, and the surprising or unforeseen destinations resulting.

-KAREN BUCHHEIM (DIRECTOR)

talk backWe invite you to stay after the Sunday, March 27 performance of Violet for a talk back ses-sion. The Director, actors and production crew will be available to answer your questions. The topic will be “Life’s Journeys: As Individuals and as a Nation”.

a pleasant and appreciative surpriseWe were recently contacted by a local wealth management company and advised that one of our patrons, Mrs. Patty Landrum, had left the theater a bequest in her will. The money will be directed to our Endowment Fund. The Fund was established to ensure the future nancial sta-bility and operation of the theater. Income generated from the Fund will be used to supple-ment the theater’s programs, capital needs and special projects. (Donations to the Fund are tax deductible) For more information: Email us at [email protected]. We have had many loyal subscribers over the years, and we appreciate this nal gesture as a tribute to the importance and value of cultural arts education and performance in our community.

2015 - 2016 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dennis graduated from Saint Leo University with a BA in Human Resources.  He and Donna have two children, Jessica and Matthew. When not living at the theatre, he is an avid golfer and can usually be found at Hell's Point Golf Course on Sundays and also works for Beach Hardware and Paint at the Oceanfront.

"We don't do it for money, obviously, and if we did get paid, I don't believe the end product would be as good a production. A bunch of people get together--some who know what they're doing, and some who may be doing it for the rst time, and put together a wonderful show that started out with an empty stage, and ended up with something fantastic."

Although Dennis has a “behind the scenes” board job, he thoroughly enjoys being in the “front of house” during our shows and specically as House Manager. He likes inter-acting with our patrons, and takes every opportunity during the opening curtain speech to encourage rst time visitors to volunteer and help “sweep up after the show,” which generally gets a good laugh and puts the audience at easat ease. Over the years, he has worked many shows as the light and sound board operator, stage manager, and stage crew.  He designed the set for Murder Once Removed and co- designed the set for Oklahoma.

He has appeared onstage as Charlie (the cop) in Murder Once Removed, Diamond Louie (hoodlum) in The Front Page, Big Julie (another hoodlum) in Guys and Dolls, and sat slumped over in a wheelchair for the opening scene as Richard (the dead guy) in The Unexpected Guest.

Dennis is a man of many talents. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he enlisted in the Navy in 1973, where he met his wife Donna in 1981 while they were stationed in Hawaii. When the Navy sent them to Hampton Roads in 1987, they knew they’d found their new home. Dennis retired as a Command Master Chief in 2003, after serving honorably for 30 years.

HHe became interested / affiliated with LTVB in 2001 because of his wife. He jokes, "I only got involved with the theater so I could see my wife once in awhile...." At rst, Dennis only volun-teered with set building.  But by 2003, he had been elected to the Board of Directors and has held the board positions of Box Office, Corresponding Secretary, Building and Grounds, Pro-grams, Technical Coordinator, and nally, Set Coordinator.  As SSet Coordinator, Dennis is responsible for our amazing sets; leading our volunteers to ensure that the sets are built to the designers’ specications and within our six week pre-production schedule.
