Mathematics Warm-up – The Grapes of Math- here is Miss Humphrey reading today’s pages. For each image, record how you counted the items. Remember, the aim is to not count by ones.

Addition Turn over 3- here is Miss Humphrey explaining today’s lesson. This game helps us to use efficient strategies to solve addition problems. Some strategies we have learnt so far include:

Friends of 10 e.g. 7 & 3

Combinations to 20

e.g. 15 & 5

Doubles e.g. Double 6 is

12

Near Doubles e.g. 6 + 7

Double 6 is 12 1 more is 13

Partitioning e.g. 4+3+6 4 + 6 is 10

10 + 3 is 13 You will need: -a pack of cards -a copy of the gameboard PDF(or you could draw it onto a piece of paper) Instructions

1. Take out the 10s and face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings, Jokers) and then give the cards a shuffle.

2. Turn over 3 cards. 3. Look for 2 cards that match addition strategies

like friends of 10, combinations to 20, doubles and near doubles.

4. Put the card that you didn’t use back on the bottom of the pile.

5. On the gameboard, record the: cards used, strategy used and keep a running total.

6. Keep playing until you reach the bottom of the game board.

Other ways to play • This is a 1 payer game, but you can also play it with a partner. You will need 2

gameboards and the winner would be the person who has the highest total score. • For subtraction, choose which cards to combine using known facts and then subtract

Mindfulness Smiling Minds Smiling Mind is a meditation app for young people. It has been developed by a team of psychologists and uses mindfulness to boost calmness, contentment and clarity. Follow the link to create an account. Signing up is free. You can then access the meditations made specifically for 5 -7 year olds. Feel free to pick and choose any age-appropriate session depending on your mood on the day. www.smilingmind.com.au

Mindfulness task Sometimes we get so busy inside our heads, we forget that our bodies are attached... oops! Draw yourself at a time when your head and body are working and moving together like a wonderful machine! What are you doing and how are you feeling? Think of some emotion words to add.

Geography - Australian Floral Emblems and Animals Australia is a megadiverse country and is home to many unique species of plants and animals. Australia's national floral emblem is the golden wattle. When in flower, the golden wattle displays the national colours, green and gold. The golden wattle is a symbol of unity. Australia is also home to so many amazing animals! Interestingly more than 80% of Australia’s animals and plants are NOT found anywhere else in the world. Watch this video of Ms Cheney talking about Australian Animals

1. Label the states and territories on a map of Australia and match the floral emblem to

the correct state or territory. Draw your favourite emblem. 2. List 5-10 animals that are native to Australia. 3. Choose an Australian animal and complete an animal ‘fact file’ (information to

include animal name, appearance, habitat, food and interesting facts). 4. Monotremes are a species that can only be found in Australia. Do you know what

makes monotremes different from other mammals? Which two animals are the world's only monotremes?

5. Do you know of any Australian animals that are endangered? (‘Endangered’ means at risk of extinction.)

Page 5: Stage 1 Term 3 Week 7- Learning Activities

Tuesday English – Phonics Hunt- Pick a sound and go hunting in a picture book. Eg how many ‘ay’ words can you find? Write them down.

You may also like to watch “ ck sounds book search read by Miss Somerville “ . Write down all the “K / ck” words you hear. Count how many you heard and post it on seesaw.

Writing –

Rewrite an ending to your favourite story Watch this video of Mr Adam explaining the task.

Rewrite the ending to your favourite story book or fairytale. You can choose any story or fairytale you know well. For example: Goldilocks and the Three Bears or The Three Little Pigs. Think about OTHER endings that could happen. Was goldilocks actually just playing hide and seek with the bears or did the three little pigs trick the wolf by locking him in their house and they escaped and lived in the wolf’s mansion. Be creative! REMEMBER: We want you to be as descriptive as possible, make it exciting, use similes, onomatopoeia, adjectives. The ending should not just be 2 or 3 sentences. Have some fun with your writing!

Example:

The Frog Prince:

The Princess kissed the frog sweetly. All of a sudden, the frog began to shimmer and shine as brightly as the sun. The princess covered her eyes to block out the burning, bright light. The frog grew two long legs, two muscley arms, a round head, and a lot of hair. I mean ALOT OF HAIR all over his body. The frog prince was actually a monkey! The princess had just kissed a monkey. “EEEWWW!” Screamed the Princess. -----------------------------------------------------

Partitioning e.g. 4+3+6 4 + 6 is 10 10 + 3 is 13

You will need: • a pack of cards • whiteboard/whiteboard marker or paper and pencils

Instructions • Take out the 10s and face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings, Jokers) and then give the

cards a shuffle • Turn over 4 cards and think about how to find the total using efficient strategies. • Record your thinking on your whiteboard. • Are there any other ways to solve the problem you can think of? Record any other

methods. Example

Mindfulness Smiling Minds Use the app/website to pick and choose any age-appropriate session depending on your mood on the day. A good one for this topic is: The Wish Tree

Mindfulness Activity Think of a favourite tree or imagine a favourite tree. Imagine it is filled with magical wish birds. What do you wish for today? Just choose something that makes you feel calm and happy. Draw your favourite tree and fill it with wish birds. Write your wish beneath your tree.

Science Have you ever had a blackout at your house? When all the electricity is shut off? Think about all the things you could not use! In our modern society we use electricity every day in hundreds of ways you don’t even think about. We can get electricity from a few sources both renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable fossil fuels are the main driver of global warming, climate change and greenhouse gasses. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy - unlike solar power, geothermal, and wind energy. That means that when they are all used up, there will not be anymore. Australia has a plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Can you make a map of all the rooms in your house and how many things use electricity in each room? Here is a video of Miss P showing you what it might be like with no electricity

Library- from Miss Compton- Hello everybody! Week 7 is Book Week, always an exciting week on our learning calendar. The theme for Book Week 2021 is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds” The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have decided not to postpone Book Week this year which means we need to find a new way to celebrate books and have some much needed fun! Book Parades have been a long-standing tradition at our school, and we would hate to miss out, so, because everyone in the Narraweena Public School learning community is so Resilient, Resourceful, Adaptable and Creative we are going to go ahead with our Book Parade… with a twist! Scrambled Eggs and Kooky Potatoes! This year, instead of making PEOPLE sized costumes for a book parade … everyone is invited to dress up a HARDBOILED EGG or a POTATO! Children in all Stages, your Library Work for this week is to think of your favourite book, the characters in that book and make a little magic with your egg or potato. The idea is NOT to pester family to go out of their way to get supplies… please use whatever you can find about your home and (with permission) get ingenious and inventive! Please take a photo and send it [email protected] and I will put them all together into a montage to view our ‘parade’ in Week 8! Here are some eggs and potatoes I have dressed up based on some of the books you all might have been reading and like as a little bit of inspiration for each stage. As you can see, they DON’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT, I hope you have a lot of fun! Pippi Longstocking Astrid Lindgren (Potato)

Thursday English- Writing Re-design a book Cover Today you will be redesigning a book cover of a picture book of your choice. You will need to: 1. Think of a new title 2. Design a front cover 3. Write a blurb for the back In case you don’t already know, a blurb is the writing on the back cover of a book. This text is designed to encourage people to pick up the book and read it. A blurb should briefly describe the story without giving away too many spoilers. You should introduce the characters and give some hints about what the story is about. But don’t give too much away! Watch this video of Miss Marnoch explaining todays writing task and creating her own example.

You may like to use a blank piece of paper to complete this task. Fold the paper in half to create a mini book. Design your front and back covers on the piece of paper. Now you will have your own sample book!

Mathematics Warm-up – The Grapes of Math- here is Miss Humphrey reading today’s pages. Record how you counted the items. Remember, the aim is to not count by ones.

Time- Using a Calendar- Special dates and holidays A calendar is a tool to mark the passing of time. It is often presented as a series of pages that shows the days, weeks, and months of a particular year. We use it to keep track of each day and it allows us to visually see when different events will happen. Watch this Video to learn more about calendars.

Every month is full of days and weeks to observe and celebrate. Many of those days like ANZAC day, New Year’s Eve and your own birthday are quite well known to you while others are not. Have you ever heard of Backwards Day? Or Look for Circles Day?

Think about days that are important to you and your family. Present these on a table like the one shown. See if you can add some days that are not as well-known but sound fun or interesting to you. Before you start watch this Video of Mrs Oakes having a go completing the activity.

Art - Golden Wattle Australia’s national floral emblem is the golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha Benth). When in flower, the golden wattle displays the national colours of green and gold, across our land. As one species of a large group of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity. Wattle is one of the first plants to germinate after a bushfire and is seen as a symbol of resilience, renewal and of people starting again after adversity – which is the Australian spirit.

All of Australia’s national sporting teams wear wattle inspired green and gold uniforms. Wattle even features in the victory song of the Australian Cricket team: “Under the Southern Cross I stand.” It is typically sung by the cricketers after every victory and "treated with respect" within the team. The official lyrics are as follows:

Under the Southern Cross I stand

A sprig of wattle in my hand,

A native of my native land,

Australia you little beauty.

*The golden wattle has been used in the design of Australian stamps. Use the following images as inspiration to Design a stamp on a piece of paper or cardboard using golden wattle as your theme. Here is a video from Ms Cheney

Watch Carla’s Sandwich then watch this video of Mr Adam explaining the activity and summarising Carla’s Sandwich.

1. Read your favourite story. 2. Summarise and write down all the main

parts of the story. 3. Organise how many comic boxes you

will need to create your comic strip. I.e. 1 or 2 boxes for an important part.

Page 15: Stage 1 Term 3 Week 7- Learning Activities

Mathematics Warm-up – The Grapes of Math- here is Miss Humphrey reading today’s pages Record how you counted the items. Remember, the aim is to not count by ones.

Time- Seasons The four seasons are Summer Autumn, Winter and Spring. Each season has it’s own kind of weather. The seasons change because the Earth tilts on an angle as it orbits the sun. This means that during a part of the year, either the northern part or the southern part of the Earth leans more directly towards the sun. The part closest to the sun gets more light and heat and has summer. While the part tilting away from the sun has less light and heat and has winter.

There are 3 months in each season. In Australia, we begin and end the year in Summer! Summer (December, January, February) Autumm (March, April, May) Winter (June, July, August) Spring (September, October, November) Watch this Video of Mrs Oakes talking about the seasons and explaining the task.

Most of the Aboriginal nations recognise more than four seasons. Some of these nations have six, seven or eight seasons. The seasons are defined by food availability, harvesting time for fruits and flowers, the stars in the sky, as much as by temperature. Watch this short clip on the different seasons in Australia’s Indigenous cultures for more on this.
