    Staffordshire Surge vs Manchester Titans

    GameDay 8

    Welcome to our second gameday magazine and today we welcome the6-2 Manchester Titans to Surge Field for what should be a great

    afternoon of American football.In our last game against Lincolnshire Bombers we were victorious 42-14 in what was a very hot day with our bumper crowd which we hope

    to have again for the Titans game.Last time out against the Titans we lost 12-38 so hopefully we can get a

    little closer to our opponents today and get the W on the board.

    We had a huge success with our first game day magazine over 260+views so we have decided to try another for todays game and then

    hopefully next season we will have a magazine for every game we playand who knows hopefully at some point we might one day have

    magazines available to purchase on game day, but for now we are stillon the internet and we hope you enjoy our magazine and we welcome

    all feedback, details of how to get in touch with us are inside themagazine. A massive thank you to everyone who took the time to

    download the magazine and read it, means a lot to us.

    Notes from the Editor

    ByShaun Rogers

    So in the blistering heat we managed to notch up our second W of the seasonagainst the Lincolnshire Bombers in what proved to be a very good game. The Surge

    did not let the heat get to them and in the 2 nd half after a well earned rest comestraight out the blocks to secure the W on the board and take our season to 2-5.Today we welcome the 6-2 Manchester Titans to Surge Field in our last game at

    home for the season.I only started with the team this year and I assure you I will be counting the days

    down until the KO of the 2014 season.I hope you will all join me in saying what a good season it has been and that we are

    proud of every player who has worn the Surge jersey this season. Now the hard workbegins getting a team for the 2014 season as well as getting a larger fan base to

    support the team.This team this year can not be faulted for there effort, commitment and

    determination that every player has shown threw out the campaign and I wouldpersonally like to congratulate every player who has put on a Surge uniform this

    season for a truly memorable first season following you guys and I look forward toseeing you all suit up ready for the 2014 season.

    ~~~~~Notes from the Head Coach
    ByJohn Farmiloe
    When we first played the Titans seven weeks ago in Manchester we struggled in thefirst half but we made adjustments and were much more competitive for the rest of the game. That game could be a turning point for our season and today, which is our
    last home game, will be a good test to see how far we have progressed.
    The Surge first played the Titans ten years ago when the Titans made their leaguedebut in the Northern Conference of Division 2. In the teams first encounter the
    Surge won 43 0 but the second game was much closer. The Surge finished third inthe conference and quarterback Richard Large led the division in passing with 121
    completions and 15 touchdowns. Ten years on and myself and Richard are still withthe club.
    When we trained to prepare for this game I noted how our team has changed, evensince last year. With so much new talent in the squad we are aiming for a strong
    finish to the season. Our next three games are against teams that are all incontention for a place in the playoffs and we look forward to the challenge of
    competing with them.Thanks for your support, Head Coach John Farmiloe
    New to the Game..Surge are here to Help !!Surge are here to Help !!Surge are here to Help !!Surge are here to Help !!
    We dont want you sitting there on the sidelines today thinking what is going on,why do they keep stopping play ?, why are they all kneeling down ?, how manypoints do they get for that kick ?, why are they cheering him running into the largearea at the end ?Yes these are all comments I have overheard in my time watching the Surge so letshope we can help you out. In this issue we are going to look at how the Surge willline up on the pitch and the basics of the game.
    In todays magazine we are going to focus on both the field of play andthe officials.
    So lets take to the field and find out what all the markings mean.
    Each team must make 10 yards to get a 1 st down, and must make theball go past (even if its just the tip of the ball) the goalline to score aTouchdown.
    So what are the lines in the middle they are Hash marks and on the nextpage we learn more about the Yard Lines and the Hash Marks.
  • 7/28/2019 Staffordshire Surge vs Manchester Titans
    8/28
    Yard linesYard lines, at intervals of 5 yards, run parallel to the goal lines and aremarked across the field from sideline to sideline. These lines stop 8inches short of the 6-foot solid border in the NFL.
    Yard lines give players and fans an idea of how far a team must advancethe ball in order to record a first down. As Chapter 3 explains in detail,an offensive team must gain 10 yards in order to post a first down.Consequently, every 10 yards, starting from the goal lines, the field isnumbered in multiples of 10. In the NFL, the bottoms of these numbersare placed 12 yards from each sideline. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, andone 50-yard line are 2 yards in length. All these lines and numbers arewhite.
    Hash marksHash marks mark each yard line 70 feet, 9 inches from the sidelines inthe NFL.Two sets of hash marks (each hash is 1 yard in length) run parallelto each other down the length of the field and are approximately 1812feet apart. When the ball carrier is either tackled or pushed out of bounds, the officials return the ball in-bounds to the closest hash mark
    to where its spotted.Punted balls that go out of bounds are also marked on the nearest hashmark .
    So hopefully now you have a better understanding of the field that theSurge will be taking to in the game against the Manchester Titans
    The OfficialsNow we all know that any sports game can not be played at a decentstandard with out the men (or women) in the middle who officiate the
    game we are playing/watching.Sometimes we hate them sometimes we love them but either way theyare an integral part of any sporting event and more so in the game of American football. Here we explain why there are so many out on thefield and what there jobs are and what there arm movements are allabout.
    The officials lineupRefereeThe referee has general oversight and control of the game. Hes the finalauthority for the score, for the number of a down in case of adisagreement, and for all rule interpretations when a debate arisesamong the other officials.Although some players and coaches consider the referee a bad guy, hesthe only official who wears a white hat. (All the other officials wear blackhats.)
    The referee announces all penalties and confers with the offendingteams captain, explaining the penalty. Before the snap of the ball, hepositions himself in the offensive backfield, 10 to 12 yards behind theline of scrimmage, and favours the right side if the quarterback is right-handed (and, of course, the left side if the quarterback is left-handed).The referee also monitors any illegal hits on the quarterback, such asroughing the passer. He follows the quarterback throughoutthe game and watches for the legality of blocks made near him.
  • 7/28/2019 Staffordshire Surge vs Manchester Titans
    10/28
    At the end of any down, the referee can request the head linesman andhis assistants to bring the yardage chains onto the field to determinewhether the ball has reached the necessary line for a new first down.
    The referee also notifies the head coach when any player is disqualifiedfor unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct and tells thecoach on whom each penalty is called.
    UmpireThe umpire is responsible for the legality of the players equipment andfor watching all play along the line of scrimmage, the division linebetween the offensive and defensive players. He makes sure that theoffensive team has no more than 11 players on the field prior to thesnap of the ball.At the start of a play, he positions himself 4 to 5 yards off the line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball. Consequently, if hes notquick on his feet, the umpire is the official most likely to be trampled byoncoming players, especially ball carriers running up the middle.Because hes responsible for monitoring the legality of all contactbetween the offensive and defensive linemen, this official calls most of
    the holding penalties. He also assists the referee on decisions involvingpossession of the ball in close proximity to the line of scrimmage. Herecords all timeouts, the winner of the coin toss, and all scores, and hemakes sure that the offensive linemen dont move downfield illegally onpass plays. Finally, when its raining, the umpire dries the wet ball priorto the snap.
    Head linesmanThe head linesman sets up on the side of the field designated by the
    referee.He straddles the line of scrimmage and watches for encroachment,offside, illegal men downfield, and all the other line-of-scrimmageviolations. Hes also responsible for ruling on all out of bounds plays tohis side of the field.The linesman is responsible for the chain crew and grabs the chain whenmeasuring for a first down. Hes usually the official who runs in after aplay is whistled dead and places his foot to show where forwardprogress was made by the ball carrier at the end of the play.
  • 7/28/2019 Staffordshire Surge vs Manchester Titans
    11/28
    Head linesman cont..
    He assists the line judge (who stands opposite the head linesman) withillegal motion calls and any illegal shifts or movement by running backs
    and receivers to his side. Also, during kicks or passes, he checks forillegal use of hands, and he must know who the eligible receivers areprior to every play.
    Line judgeThe line judge lines up on the opposite side of the field from the headlinesman and serves as an overall helper while being responsible forillegal motion and illegal shifts. He assists the head linesman with offside
    and encroachment calls. He assists the umpire with holding calls andwatching for illegal use of hands on the end of the line, especially duringkicks and pass plays. He assists the referee with calls regarding falsestarts and forward laterals behind the line of scrimmage. He also makessure that the quarterback hasnt crossed the line of scrimmage prior tothrowing a forward pass. On punts, he remains on the line of scrimmageto make sure that none of the ends move downfield prior to the ballbeing kicked.One of the line judges most important jobs is supervising the timing of the game. If the game clock becomes inoperative, he assumes theofficial timing on the field. He advises the referee when time has expiredat the end of a period. In the NFL, the line judge signals the refereewhen two minutes remain in a half, stopping the clock for the two-minute warning.
    So hopefully now you have learnt something new about the guys in theblack and white today. Please respect them as without them playing
    there part the Surge would not be playing.
    Coach Dias is starting to put his mark on the team but its next year hesgoing to expect the team to really step up and play at the level he expectsthem to.
