What’s going on at LBP?Teacher Science Survey Summary

How confident are you teaching science? The majority of teachers replied with “some” and most of the remainder said “quite a lot”. For most it depends on the strand or topic being taught.

Do you know what science resources we have in the school and do you use them when teaching science units?A mixed response with some saying they knew what we have and others saying they just look for resources when the need arises.

Are there any specific science resources you wish we had?On the wish lists were: microscopes, magnifying glasses, concave and converse lenses, prisms, and flame throwers.

What science PD do you think you need? Answers included integration of science, inquiry, modelling, junior activities, effective learning stations, question ideas with kids, inspiration, everything.

What is it?

The Scientific MethodWhat is science? It's a technique for uncovering the hidden rules

that govern the world.

Science isn't about facts. It's about the quest for facts -- the scientific

method, the process by which we hash through confusing thickets of ignorance.

Science is dynamic, argumentative, collaborative, competitive, filled with flashes of crazy excitement and hours of drudgework, and driven by ego: Our desire to be the one who figures it out, at least for now.

The Scientific Methodand

InquiryInquiry starts with exploration

and questioning and leads to investigation into a worthy question,

issue, problem or idea.

It involves asking questions, gathering and analysing information, generating

solutions, making decisions, justifying conclusions and taking action.
