1427 Friday 24 July 2020 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, Welcome back to Term Three also known as Founder’s Term at Loyola College. I trust that the term holidays have been a time to rest, regenerate and spend some quality time with family. The return to school has been less than normal with an additional week of holidays for most students in Years 7-10 and only our VCE and VCAL students back onsite for learning. The COVID situation will once again impact on our College life. Correspondence was sent home last week about arrangements for students during the lockdown period. If there is any consolation it is in the fact that we have done this quite successfully before and will be able to manage it again. Staff Professional Development Day Our Professional Development Day last Friday focussed on the Mission of the Catholic school and the importance of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Teachers examined the principles of CST and then worked in teams to identify how these could be implemented in various subject areas and year levels. It was a very productive day and hopefully these principles can commence to be rolled out in classrooms as they are implemented. College Feast Day This key event in the school calendar will be celebrated on Friday 31 July. This is a day that our whole school community looks forward to annually. Unfortunately, this year because of COVID, it will need to take a different form. Mass from St Ignatius Chapel will be live streamed at school and at home for those on remote learning. Other activities have been postponed until September. This year Father Sacha-Bermudez SJ, will be the celebrant for our Mass. COVID-19 A reminder that until further notice all students are required to wear masks at school when practical and safe to do so. This includes both in class and out of class. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to maintain the hygiene standards set out by the State Government including the regular washing of hands with soap and the use of hand sanitizers available in all classrooms. Students must also ensure they follow the temperature check requirements on arriving at school daily. Transition Program Students will shortly be asked to commence making decisions about their subjects for 2021. This year all information nights will be online, and you will shortly be notified of how you will be able to ask questions of teachers about specific courses and subjects to help inform the decision-making process. Given the current circumstances it is even more important that parents and guardians become involved in this process to ensure that informed decisions are made for the benefit of each student. Families will have by now received the Re-Enrolment

1427 Friday 24 July 2020 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

Welcome back to Term Three also known as Founder’s Term at Loyola College. I trust that the term holidays have been a time to rest, regenerate and spend some quality time with family. The return to school has been less than normal with an additional week of holidays for most students in Years 7-10 and only our VCE and VCAL students back onsite for learning. The COVID situation will once again impact on our College life. Correspondence was sent home last week about arrangements for students during the lockdown period. have done this quite successfully before and will be able to manage it again.

It was a very productive day and hopefully these principles can commence to be rolled out in classrooms as they are implemented.

We welcome back Mr Cuddon from leave and Ms Mascia who is replacing Ms Salamon while she is on Family Leave.

Ms Wyatt has resigned from her position at the College and we thank her for her contribution during her time here.

Condolences We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr Toney, Head of McAuley House on the recent passing of his mother in the UK.

Congratulations We congratulate Mrs Nicht and her husband Sebastian on the arrival of their first child, Harriet Mae.

In the coming weeks may our College patron Ignatius guide us in our decisions and accompany us during these challenging times in our living out of our College theme: Head. Heart and Hands. May we be inspired by his example to go out to spread the Good News of God’s bountiful love for all humanity and use our gifts and talents in action for the service of others.

Upcoming Events Once again COVID-19 restrictions have made holding large events a huge challenge. During this next section of remote learning, we have cancelled all college events. We are still conducting Parent Committee meetings (LPFA, PWP, LCAA) along with some Co-Curriculum activities over MS Teams.

St Ignatius Day On Friday, 31 July our St. Ignatius Day Mass will be streamed into classrooms for students on campus and via YouTube for students at home. Parents can also tune in by visiting www.youtube.com/loyolacollegewatsonia

On Tuesday, 15 September we are hoping to hold a Loyola Celebration Day that will include the traditional Walkathon and Carnival.

Live at The Inigo On Tuesday night we held our first ever Live music concert. At this stage, this is one of the only ways to share the great talent of our students. We will be looking to produce more of these during the term, so make sure to subscribe to www.youtube.com/loyolacollegewatsonia and www.youtube.com/mpacloyolacollege so you don’t miss out.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY

Term 3 – Founder’s Term On 31 July we will celebrate the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. Normally, 1500 members of the College community commence the day in the Loyola Companions Hall, celebrating mass, presided over by a Jesuit. The students then participate in the annual walkathon to raise funds for their respective house charities – faith in action, men and women for and with others.

The day is a joyous celebration of our identity and upon returning from the walkathon, students enjoy a carnival, live concert, other activities and, in the tradition of Ignatian hospitality, a wonderful lunch.

Of course, this year will be different. The mass will be streamed from the chapel. Celebratory activities and the walkathon are on hold with tentative plans to do some of these things later in the year. However, the other main focus of our day – men and women for and with others, hasn’t changed. The six house charities we support have all had greater calls on the services they provide.

The house student leaders have all committed to still raising funds. On the 22 July virtual school assembly, they all reminded the students in their houses to support their initiatives. We can’t make a difference to the lives of everyone in need, but we can make a difference to some. A collective effort is much more effective than a few individuals working hard and everyone else just sitting back.

The Examen COVID-19 has changed the way we pray the Examen at Loyola. The Examen is a reflective prayer that St Ignatius asked his Companions to pray daily. The prayer starts with acknowledging God’s presence in our lives and asks us to recall something we are grateful for and give thanks to God for it.

As we enter more deeply into the prayer, we pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make the prayer meaningful and for us to approach it honestly and to not be overly self-critical. The Examen is a positive prayer that has an underpinning theme of God’s unconditional love for us.

The middle stage of the Examen is called the review. We think back over past experiences, generally recent ones, and are attentive to feelings that recalling these experiences invoke in us. We reflect on what God might be saying to us through these feelings. We are asked to determine whether our reflections come from a good or a bad place. If there is anything we are sorry for, we ask forgiveness.

For some it is helpful to imagine we are having a conversation with Jesus as one would have with an understanding and non-judgemental friend. The final stage of the Examen is to look forward and commit to one action or one attitude that we can do or work on that will contribute towards us living as God wants us to live.

Over the past few weeks, I have been interviewing various College students, usually student leaders, and asking them to reflect on their lives, interests or a particular theme. From this, a script is written, and the students record the Examen.

These Examens are streamed each Monday just before the lunchbreak. They are available on the College Website: www.loyola.vic.edu.au/student-wellbeing/examen/

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

Application for accelerated subjects in 2021 In Term Three our Year 9 and 10 students will be considering their Year 10 and Year 11 subjects. There has been a change in the application process for students who seek to do an accelerated subject in the following year.

Current Year 9 students A number of you will consider taking on a Unit 1 and 2 Subject (Year 11 subject) in 2021. Acceleration requires demonstrated consistent high academic achievement and an ability to take on the demands of an accelerated subject. Therefore, a student will need to be committed to their studies, well organised and can meet deadlines. English will be one of the subjects that the student needs to demonstrate a consistent high level of academic ability. Semester Two reports will be checked for maintenance of consistency in academic effort.

An invitational letter, from myself, will be sent out to our top students and their families explaining the process for acceleration and applications will be completed online.

Current Year 10 students An invitational letter, from the relevant Head of Learning, will be sent out to students currently studying a Unit 1/2 subject. Acceptance for Unit 3/4 is not automatic. Letters will be sent to students who have been able to sustain a high level of academic ability and meet the demands of the accelerated Units 1/2. Students will need to re-apply for acceleration and depending on results acceleration may or may not be able to continue.

The subject selection process takes place in early Term Three for all of our students and once again students will be asked to complete their subject choices online, with your guidance. All current Year 9, 10 and 11 students will meet with a senior member of staff to discuss their choices.

Transition Interviews For 2020 Year 11 Transition Interviews will be run on College campus during their designated timeslot following COVID 19 mandated health regulations.

For 2020 Year 9 to 10 Transition Interviews will run via MS Teams.

Transition interview times have been planned for the following dates. § August 10 § August 11

More information will be sent out closer to the date.

Subject Selections for Unit 1/2 Each VCE study is designed to provide a two-year program. Studies are nationally and internationally benchmarked at Unit 1 and Unit 2 level to a Year 11 standard, and studies at Unit 3 and Unit 4 level are benchmarked to a Year 12 standard.

Each VCE unit involves 50 hours of scheduled classroom instruction. In addition, it is expected that students will undertake up to 50 hours of self-directed learning for each unit. Satisfactory completion of a VCE unit is based on successful completion of outcomes. Satisfactory completion of units is determined by the school, in accordance with Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) requirements.

Satisfactory completion of outcomes will not be counted in either your ATAR or Study Score. However, you will need to achieve a satisfactory completion of at least 16 of your VCE units to be eligible to receive a satisfactory completion of VCE.

VCAA recommends that schools encourage all students to undertake scored assessment wherever possible. Scored assessment provides a more detailed record of student achievement and is the best way to maximise opportunities and pathways to further education and training. However, Loyola College understands the need for flexibility in building individual student programs and is supportive of students who elect to satisfactorily complete Units 3 and 4 of a study without completing all or any Graded Assessments (Note: two Graded Assessment scores are required to achieve a study score). Coursework requirements must be met for satisfactory completion.

Units 1 and 2 are to be taken as a pair. Loyola College offers a range of subjects to enable students to continue with their strengths and connect with their future pathways. Students have one-to-one career guidance counselling and transitions interviews prior to final subject selection to enable informed decisions for future learning pathways.

For greatest success it is advisable that students continue their subject sequence into Units 3 and 4. Loyola acknowledges that as studies progress and pathway considerations change there may be a need for the Unit 1 to 4 sequence to be broken.

Complete changing of a VCE sequence should be kept to a minimum. In align with this, students will be given the opportunity to review their program at the end of Unit 1 and 2 and change one of their possible sequences. Students will, by the very nature of VCE Units 3/4, have a reduced program (an English plus 4 other subjects and Religious Education).
