Our Lady of Sorrows Parish April 7th, 2019
V SUNDAY OF LENT
Dear brothers and sisters,
Although this episode is absent from many ancient
codices, Church Tradition regards it as inspired and
canonical. Its omission may have been due to the fact
that some rigorists thought that, because it showed Jesus
to be so merciful towards this woman, it might lead to a
relaxation of moral rules.
At any event, the episode shows the way Jesus thinks: he,
the Just One, does not condemn; whereas these people,
who are sinners, judge that the woman should die. “It is
important to recognize that we ought never be so carried
away in our contemplation of divine mercy that we forget
God’s mercy into account; because hope is not without
fear, not fear without hope” (Fray Luis de Granada, Life
of Jesus Christ, 13).
Jesus’ reply refers to the way stoning was carried out:
those who witnessed the crime had to throw the first
stones, and then others joined in, to purge, in some way,
the shame which the crime brought to the whole people.
God Bless you,
Fr. Francisco M. Tovar
