If you have a Medicare Part D prescription Drug Plan, then October 15 through December 7 is your “sign-up window” to review the 2020 plans with a certified MMAP Counselor (Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program) and choose a new drug plan that would start January 1. Call us at 356-3585 to schedule your appointment for Open Enrollment. Do it today!
As we move through the last few months of 2019 our focus at the Center continues to be “AWARENESS - EDUCATION - RESOURCES” offering to Alpena County Seniors the Power of Knowledge.
It is imperative that members of our community are aware of the funding sources making our programs possible, so we chose to include a Fact Sheet in this newsletter. Please note that we are 70% funded by state and feder-al funds and the remaining 30% is fundraising and donations. Of course, as state and federal budgets are cut the remaining 30% increases.
Unfortunately, our transportation program will be on hold effective October 1st and will resume when new funds become available on January 1, 2020. Our medication program is also at a critical point. For additional information or if you would like to help in anyway please feel free to contact me.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that every year in the United States, more than 245,000 women get breast cancer? Although it is not very common, men can also get breast cancer.
Have a safe and happy fall!
A Widow’s ClubIf you are widowed and need a place to cry, laugh or just talk our club may be just what you are looking for. We plan to meet the first Friday of every month at 10:30 am. Friday, October 4th at 10:30 am will be our next meeting here at the Alpena Senior Center. If you are interested in participating or have questions please call BJ at 356-3585.

Breast Cancer in Older AdultsBreast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in elderly women. A woman has a one-in-eight chance of devel-oping breast cancer over her lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. The older a woman is, the more likely it is she will be diagnosed with the disease. On average and across all races, there is about a 9 percent chance that a 60-year-old woman develops breast cancer over her next 20 years.
Nearly 275,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year, with more than three million survivors of the disease living at any given time, according to the American Cancer Society. About half of the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases come from women over the age of 60, and another 20 percent come from women over 70 years old. At age 80, the chances of you developing breast cancer over the rest of your life begin to decrease, according to Harvard Medical School.
Unfortunately, women over 65 who are diagnosed with early onset breast cancer are more likely to pass away due to the disease. Women in that same age group are more likely to have the cancer recur, as well. More than 40,000 women die from breast cancer every year.
It’s vital that women—and their loved ones—know the warning signs, causes, and different types of breast cancer, as well as how and when to get tested, and how it can be treated and prevented.

WalnutsWalnuts (Juglans regia) are a tree nut belonging to the walnut family. They originated in the Mediterranean region and Central Asia and have been part of the human diet for thousands of years.
These nuts are rich in omega-3 fats and contain higher amounts of antioxidants than most other foods. Eating walnuts may improve brain health and prevent heart disease and cancer.
Walnuts are most often eaten on their own as a snack but can also be added to salads, pastas, breakfast cereals, soups, and baked goods. They’re also used to make walnut oil — an expensive culinary oil frequently used in salad dressings.
Walnuts are made up of 65% fat and about 15% of protein. They’re low in carbs — most of which consist of fiber.
Like other nuts, most of the calories in walnuts come from fat. This makes them an energy-dense, high calorie food. However, even though walnuts are rich in fat and calories, studies indicate that they don’t increase obesity risk when replacing other foods in your diet. Walnuts are also richer than most other nuts in polyunsaturated fats. The most abundant one is an omega-6 fatty acid called linoleic acid.
Heart disease or cardiovascular disease – is a broad term used for chronic conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. In many cases your risk of heart disease can be reduced with healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating nuts. Walnuts are no exception. In fact, many studies show that eating walnuts may
combat risk factors for heart disease by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, reducing inflammation and improving blood vessel function, thus cutting the risk of plaque buildup in your arteries. These effects are likely caused by the beneficial fat composition of walnuts, as well as their rich antioxidant content.

“501” River News - October 2019 - 11
October is Healthy Lung MonthIt’s incredibly important to take care of your lungs, whether you have healthy lungs, or a disease such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. You need to keep your lungs working as well as possible. Your whole body depends on your lungs to keep breathing and distributing oxygen-rich blood throughout your body and to get rid of the body’s gaseous waste, carbon dioxide. Your whole body depends on your lungs working correctly, but your brain and heart are two of the major organs that require more oxygen than any other part.
Now that summer is over; many people are going into the colder months of the year, which is when they are more likely to experience trouble breathing. The seasons affect everyone differently, and for many people, October is the beginning of the tougher time of the year. This is an appropriate time to think about taking extra care of your health, and your lungs. Besides following your doctor’s orders on medication and follow-ups, there are many things you can do to help keep your lungs as healthy as possible.
Once you quit smoking, your lungs begin to bounce back a little, even if you’ve been smoking for many years. Also, if the damage has already been done and you’ve been diagnosed with COPD, quitting will still make a difference in how the disease progresses or not. It could make a huge difference in how severe your exacerbations are, and whether you have them at all.
Call your doctor at the first sign of a flare-up. He or she will have you treated before the exacerbation puts you in danger. You should also be mindful of how you are breathing, in the sense that you should be breathing in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. We often get into the habit of breath-ing too shallow or breathing in through our mouths. Breathing through your nose filters the air better and allows for a deeper breath. Use a peak flow meter to keep an eye on your lung function at home.
If you have COPD, you likely have an overabundance of thick phlegm in your airways. Drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day will help thin the mucus and make it much easier for you to get rid of. Staying well hydrated will also help keep your immune system working as well as possible to keep out any illnesses that can flare up your COPD or asthma.
This goes for the air inside, as well as outside. You shouldn’t be using any strong chemicals to clean your home, and wood burning stoves can also be harmful. If you must use bleach to clean with, use only a little bleach mixed with water. A little bleach or ammonia goes a long way. Avoid using chemical air fresheners and stick to things that are more natural but pay attention to make sure even the natural scents aren’t bothering you.
Take Back EventWe anticipate participating in the Take Back (Opioid Disposal) Event on Saturday, October 26th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. The Senior Center will be hosting the event sponsored by Michigan Open and North East Community Mental Health. Please call BJ or Annie at 356-3585 for more information.
