Woodson, who in 1912 became the second black to receive a PhD from Harvard University, Dr. W.E.B. Dubois was the first. (1895) He traveled to Chicago from Washington DC, along with thousands of others across the country, to celebrate and observe the 50th anniversary of the emancipation of our ancestors. Many exhibits were displayed depicting the progress of blacks since the 1865 emancipation. Inspired by the 3 week celebration, Dr. Woodson formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), and the following year in 1916, he and others published the Journal of Negro History. Inspired by the February birth month of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Woodson, more affectionately called, "The Father of Black History", chronicled a masterpiece in 1916 called, "Journal of Negro History", which served as a segue for Black History Week (1926). The one week celebration was a precursor to what is now commemorated as Black History Month. In the 1960s, black students from college campuses began to develop an increasingly conscious link with Africa. The excitement and awareness of Black History had a riveting and dramatic effect within communities. Negro History Week became Black History Month. In 1976, 50 years after the first celebration was spearheaded by Dr. Woodson, the ASNLH influenced President Gerald Ford to institutionalize February as Black History Month. Though served on a platter of lemons, BLACK HERITAGE IS RICH! No other people in civilization endured the obstacles and gruesome challenges experienced by our ancestors. Sociologists predicted we wouldn't survive...but WE not only survived, we thrived and multiplied! Black History references a people who learned to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones and translate adversity into opportunity. Our ancestors are testimonies of many dangers, toils and snares they REALLY DID overcome! We have a creative history of taking a lemon, water of hope and sugar of faith and mixing it ALL TOGETHER for our good! We fail to live up to our heritage when we allow adversity to cripple us and give up before we give out! Black History has its place, as providing a sense of psychological reflection helps preserve heritage and culture. However, we must move beyond honoring heroes who contributed and/or died before us, to analyzing the present and intentionally move from racial battle grounds towards a unified common ground, and on to moral higher ground.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Deacons Ministry as they have increased by two members.

Deacons Frank Flanders and Patrick Ross were ordained on January 13, 2019. Rev.

Dennis Harden, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Perry, was the guest

speaker and the occasion was filled with uplifting music and an atmosphere of love for the men who, along with their loving wives, Sis. Marie Flanders and Sis. Judy Ross, have and will continue to serve His Kingdom with passion and diligence. The Central Union Family wishes you well as you join us as we fulfill our quest for His

“Well done, My good and Faithful Servant!”

C.U.T.E. NUGGETS This month’s nuggets come in

the form of a nine piece.

Here are 9 keys to success from

successful people like Oprah

Winfrey, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs,

and Albert Einstein.

Always challenge yourself. Everyday push to learn something new. Believe in yourself. Don’t put a ceiling on yourself.. Don’t waste your time. Time is limited.. Don’t fear change. People always fear change. People feared

electricity when it was invented, didn’t they?

People feared coal, they feared gas-powered

engines… There will always be ignorance,

and ignorance leads to fear. But with time,

people will come to accept their silicon

masters.” Work hard. The price of success is hard work, dedication

to the job at hand, and the determination

that whether we win or lose, we have

applied the best of ourselves to the task at

hand.” Failure is inevitable. Do not let that erase the fact that we all

crawled before we walked. Be creative. You are enough of an artist to draw from

your imagination. Take action. The object of all work is production or

accomplishment and to either of these ends

there must be forethought, system, planning,

intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as

perspiration. Accept criticism. Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is

necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain

in the human body. It calls attention to an

unhealthy state of things.”

THE RECIPE FOR

EVERLASTING

LOVE 12 cups of HUGS

2 tons of KISSES

3 cups of LOVE

200 cups of KINDNESS
