(Copy enclosed) 4.0 OBJECTIVES AND SELF APPRAISAL (a) What are the principal long range / short range goals of your Department? To what extent

are they being achieved? What are the major constraints experienced? Mission:

The department aims at producing full-fledged CIVIL ENGINEERS to cater to the needs of the Modern Construction Industry and be useful citizens for building the nation. Long range goals: The department has a vision to establish centres of excellence in the following areas:- (i) Centre for Building Technology and Construction Management. (ii) Centre for Environmental Engineering and Water resources Management Also starting of new courses and resource generation through R&D and Consultancy are the other long-term objectives. Short range goals: (i) To develop application, interdisciplinary and managerial skill among students (ii) To establish good rapport with the industry (iii) To impart modern techniques in teaching and (iv) Strengthening library facilities in the department.

35

Major constraints: Funding is inadequate to meet the long term goals. However, efforts are being made to generate funds from other sources.

(b) Please summarize major developments and progress achieved during the last 5 years:

(i) New equipments have been added using the grants received from AICTE / MHRD and from the institution. A full fledged CADD laboratory has been set up with the state of the art hardware (14 Pentium machines) and software like NISA, STADDIII, NISA Design Module, Auto CADD, GEOMEDIA etc. Internet facility is made available to the students.

(ii) R&D and Consultancy wing has been quite active and revenue to the tune of 6.00 Lakhs per annum has been achieved.

(iii) New Annexure building housing class rooms, faculty rooms has been built. Also a building for the Casting yard was constructed.

(iv) Faculty strength has been considerably improved. (v) Under part-time (internal), one faculty has obtained Ph.D. Degree and four more

Ph.D. works are under progress. In addition, . under QIP programme one faculty member has obtained Ph.D. and three more faculty members are doing Ph.D.

(vi) The Department is offering a full-time M.Tech. Course in Advanced Construction Technology from the academic year 1999-2000. It has been offering M.Tech. Course in Advanced Construction Technology as a Part-Time Course since 1993-’94.

(vii) Workshops on the Concrete Road and Cyclone Resistant Structures were conducted drawing participants from PWD and other user Organisations.

(viii) The curriculum has been updated.

(c) Please indicate any significant projects under consideration for future development of

teaching and research programmes.

(i) To establish Centres of excellence (ii) To start two new post graduate programmes and under graduate courses (iii) To improve the facilities for encouraging faculty members to do Ph.D.

programmes through in-house registration (iv) To get more sponsored research projects (v) To increase the R&D and Consultancy activities. (vi) To improve teaching methodology (vii) To conduct workshops/seminars on thrust areas on regular basis.
