There is a solid connection between Sarah Ferguson Stevenson of Collamer and Samuel

Ferguson of North Syracuse.

“Mrs. A. M. Stevenson will reside at North Syracuse for some time, with her brother,

Samuel Ferguson, whose wife died recently.” “Neighborhood News,” The Syracuse

Journal, Syracuse, NY, June 5, 1890.

“Mrs. Sarah Stevenson of Collamer, is spending a few days with her brother in-law, Mr.

Samuel Ferguson.” – “North Syracuse” The Daily Journal, Syracuse, NY, March 18,

1897. The “in-law” portion is obviously in error.

The 1850 census ties Roxy to some of the Fergusons in the James C. Ferguson list, which

is a very sold link. In the table above I have attempted to merge all this information

together. I have moved David higher up to #3. He might not have existed. James

Ferguson listed him with no supporting information and he didn’t show up in any of the

census information. If he existed at all he would have had to be older and moved out or

died before 1850. I have included an unknown sibling to fill out the family to cover the 8

children found in the 1840 census. The birth dates for David and the UnSib are just place

holders for approximate dates.

Stack Family Trees 12-13-17 - 18 - Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

#2 – John Ferguson

“David's son, John (b. 1822) moved to North Syracuse in between 1855 and 1862.

Letters between John and Samuel refer to an uncle John Fergerson who died in

Washington Co in January 1853. The family name changes to Fergerson on David's

tombstone.”

“I'm looking for ancestors or relatives of my g-g-g grandfather, David, who was born in

Washington County, NY in 1799 and moved to Centerville (North Syracuse) in

Onondaga County, NY with my g-g grandfather Samuel Fergerson about 1826. David

was the second child of a family of nine. Most of the family settled in West Hebron, NY,

possibly on Ferguson Road. Family letters mention that a John W., David, Jim, and John

(b. 1822) all lived on the same road.”

Taken together these two paragraphs imply that 4-year old John Ferguson was left behind

when the family moved to North Syracuse in 1826. He sounds more like a cousin that

followed the family later. James C. Fergerson, who constructed that original Fergerson

Family Tree, even speculated that John was “possibly son of Mary Ann Wilson who is

buried in W. Hebron.” That might well be true. However, Fergerson then had to give

David Ferguson a 2nd

wife to be able to patch John into the family.

Large gap between John and Sarah – 8 years. If John is really a cousin then the gap

between Samuel and Sarah is 11 years. There could be missing children that died young

or married and possibly left the Onondaga Co. area.

#6 Ellis / Elsie Ferguson could she be a Helen?

Erastus and Roxy Cowen were living with the Jesse Randell family in Cicero at the time

of the 1860 census. A possibility is that Jesse’s wife was their daughter. The name

doesn’t match but the age is close.

“The Taft Settlement Cemetery, Taft Rd., N. Syracuse, 2 miles east of Route 11 on north

side of road Town of Cicero, New York, Submitted by Ruth Sweeting

“Sources: photocopied from ‘Onondaga Cemetery Inscriptions’ by Edith Hall at

Onondaga Co. Public Library, files of Elet Milton at Brewerton Library, and my own

(Ruth Sweeting) headstone readings.”

Randell, Jesse M. 1834-1901

Randell, Helen M. Borst 1836-1922, w/o Jesse M.

Randell, Ella Etta d. 30 Oct. 1862, 2y 2m, d/o Jesse M. & Helen

Jesse Randell’s wife’s maiden name was BORST. Therefore Erastus and Roxy Cowen

were not staying with their son-in-law in the 1860 census.

#8 James Ferguson could successfully be traced down through the years. James was

born in April 1837 and his father David had died October 25, 1836. That matches up

alright. James’ son Frank was a real drunk. Frank’s own wife had him arrested at least

twice for public intoxication for which he served 60 days each time in the penitentiary. In

1908 his kids sent him to the county home where he stayed for 14 years and where he

died in 1922.

1860 Map of Cicero, NY, from the Onondaga County Atlas. The Cicero Swamp is just

off to the east. The names around E. Cowan on the map don’t match up with those found

in the 1860 census. This is odd. This kind of mobility is expected from census to census

but never in a map and census from the same year. Erastus Cowen’s farm is just below

the northern boundary of Lot 81 on what is now Thompson Road .A person named A.

Cowan on Totman Road just across from Erastus might be a relative.

Totman Road. The parallel road just to the west, is now Thompson Road. The long east-

west road along the bottom of the map is Taft Road. The cemetery, located before where

Taft Road turns south, is Taft Settlement Cemetery. David Ferguson is buried there.
