STA Qualifying Horary Certificate Course
Intensive Residential Workshop, 2010
Since 1996, under the umbrella of the STA School of Traditional Astrology, Deborah
Houlding has presented a practitioner-level horary course, (endorsed by the APAE
and APAI*), which teaches the principles of horary in a workshop format.
This uniquely structured course provides a full theoretical overview of horary (with
copious take-home notes) but places its emphasis on modern-day client-issues and the
demonstration of practical techniques which cut straight to the crux of the horary
problem. Past delivery of the course has shown that learning horary through the
exploration of modern scenarios, under the direct guidance of a skilful practitioner,
within a small group of like-minded colleagues, is the most effective way for a student
to gain a solid understanding of horary’s full potential and acquire the subject-
confidence needed to work independently as a horary consultant.
The STA practitioner’s level horary course has been delivered in Australia, Bali,
England, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, Scotland and Tasmania.
In 2015 it will be offered for the second time in London, as a two-part attendance
course (28-30 Aug/4-6 Sept. 2015) organised by the London School of Astrology.
The course is restricted to a small number of enrolments to allow individual
attention, a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, and an ideal number of
participants for workshop exercises and group-work; therefore – places on this
course are limited to a maximum of 20 students. If you are interested, please book
early to avoid disappointment.

The course is suitable for any astrologer
with a good understanding of general
astrological principles. Student abilities
are likely to be mixed, ranging from those
new to horary to those with theoretical
expertise seeking development of
practical application. A core objective of
the course is to develop confidence in
horary practice, so whilst it is useful to
have an understanding of how horary
works, previous experience or an
established knowledge of traditional
technique is not essential. The instruction
covers everything needed for a competent
astrologer to incorporate horary into an
existing astrological practice.
Emphasis is directed towards the art of
judgement, with appreciation that self-
assurance comes through a solid
understanding of horary symbolism, and
awareness of the sensitivities that can
arise in consultation. You will be given
explanations of the techniques which
structure the horary craft, and provided
with comprehensive course notes and any
required materials. The workshop draws
upon example horaries and recent client
scenarios. All of the main areas of analysis
are explained, along with discussion of the
difficulties each topic brings.
The course explores the methodology,
history and philosophy of horary. It has
been carefully designed to allow regular
periods of student involvement and
group activity, which ensures constant
consolidation of what is being taught.
This prevents the risk of theoretical
principles overwhelming practical
assimilation. The course is part of the
syllabus of the School of Traditional
Astrology (STA) and offers APAI
recognised certificate-level qualification.
It also acts as a requisite for anyone
wishing to embark on the STA ‘Masters-
level Course’ – a specialised horary
course designed for those seeking an
advanced level of theoretical and
philosophical exploration of this subject.

Deborah Houlding is a widely
recognised authority on horary
and the transmission of
traditional astrological techn-
iques. She is known for her
research into the origin of
house symbolism, explored in
her book, The Houses: Temples of
the Sky (Wessex, 1996).
Deborah was qualified as a
horary practitioner by Olivia Barclay in
1989, after which she worked as a tutor on
the QHP and acted as Horary Editor for
the Astrological Association of Great
Britain’s Journal before moving on to
become editor of The Traditional Astrologer
Magazine (1993 to 2000). Throughout this
period Deborah maintained a very busy
horary practice with an international
clientele drawn from all walks of life.
Deborah has been teaching horary around
the world through seminars, lectures,
workshops and courses since 1990. She
established the STA School of Horary
Astrology in 1996 to teach a structured
course via intensive residential workshops:
a format which has qualified many of
today’s successful and well known horary
practitioners. She has also presented
master classes on horary for many other
credible schools and organisations,
including the Astrological Association of
Great Britain, the Oslo School of Astrology,
the London School of
Astrology and the Faculty of
Astrological Studies.
Deborah is also known for her
expertise on the techniques of
William Lilly; whose 17th
century textbook Christian
Astrology remains central to
contemporary horary tuition.
She currently acts as Horary
Editor for The Mountain Astrologer
magazine (her serialised ‘Introduction to
Horary’ was published by The Mountain
Astrologer over nine issues) and maintains
the astrology website www.skyscript.co.uk.
Although grounded in traditional
knowledge, Deborah’s employment of
horary recognises the value of modern
perspectives in psychological exploration.
She recommends a multi-dimensional
approach to judgement, which allows a
horary chart to be explored from various
perspectives and so presents insight into
spiritual and emotional underplays as
well as psychological and more purely
practical predictive analysis.
In 2010 Deborah was awarded the Astrological
Association of Great Britain’s Charles Harvey Award for
Exceptional Service to Astrology; in 2011 she was made
an Honorary Member of the Astrological Association of
Romania, for “acknowledged sustained contributions to
the promotion of astrology”; in 2012 she was honoured as
the first recipient of the Jayavidya International Astrology
Award instituted by the Cultural Association Jayavidya.
