The Vicar’s Visionings
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ;
One of the benefits, and for Mac and I a great joy and gift, is to travel by car when we go on vacation. The beauty and awe of God’s creation is heightened, vivid, and splendid. Driving through the Panhandle, my thoughts were of the hardship of the people who came here to live and how they lived in the midst of struggle, hard work, and at times isolation. Yes, God was present and they were blessed, but I recognize how much easier I have it today. As we approach Thanksgiving, I invite you to join me in praying A Litany of Thanksgiving (Book of Common Prayer, P 837). Praying this thanksgiving throughout the month of November will keep us mindful of God’s blessings that are abundant as well as how we are to respond and live.
“Let us give thanks to God our Father for all his gifts so freely bestowed upon us. For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth, and sky, and see, We thank you, Lord.
For all that is gracious in the lives of men and woman, revealing the image of Christ, We thank you, Lord. For our daily food and drink, our homes and families, and our friends, We thank you, Lord. For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, We thank you, Lord.
For health and strength to work, and leisure to rest and play, We thank you, Lord.
For the brave and courageous, who are patient in suffering and faithful in adversity, We thank you, Lord. For all the valiant seekers after truth, liberty, and justice, We thank you, Lord.
For the communion of saints, in all times and places, We thank you, Lord.
Above all, we give you thanks for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord; To him be praise and glory, with you, O Father, and the Holy Spirit, now
and for ever. Amen. Faithfully In Christ;

Food for thought:
From Henri Nouwen’s books Compassion and The Only Necessary Thing.
“In the breaking of the bread together, we reclaim our own broken condition rather than denying its reality. We become more aware than ever that we are taken, set apart as witnesses for God; that we are blessed by words and acts of grace; and that we are broken, not in revenge or cruelty, but in order to become bread which can be given as food to others. When two, three, ten, a hundred, or a thousand people eat the same bread and drink the same cup, and so become united with the broken and poured-out life of Christ, they discover that their own lives are part of the one life and thus recognize each other as brothers and sisters. There are very few places left in our world where our common humanity can be lifted up and celebrated, but each time we come together around the simple signs of bread and wine, we tear down many walls and gain an inkling of God’s intensions for the human family. And each time this happens we are called to become more concerned not only about each other’s well-being but also about the well-being of all people in the world.”
