From the Pastor: The news that there are a couple of vaccines for COVID-19 that are nearly ready for production and distribution is a great way to end the church year and to begin a new one. With that news we begin the season of Advent this year, the season of hopeful-ness and expectation. Nonetheless, we have always had reason to hope, regardless of the “advent” of effective

vaccines. God lives! God saves! God is merciful and loving! God’s promises remain! For this reason we have hope. Throughout the month of November, I have returned to read a scripture text only heard around Holy Thursday and Good Friday, and occasionally used at funeral liturgies. The Book of Lamentations 3:17-26 is one of those Bible texts that serves us so well. The writer is lamenting expressing his sorrow and that of the whole community which has suffered destruction and exile from Jerusalem. The book is dark with images of sadness and woe, except for a few verses in the text cited above. In the middle of this 5-chapter book, in the middle of the third chapter, like a pivot point, is the following: Remembering it over and over, my soul is downcast. But this I will call to mind; therefore, I will hope: The LORD’s acts of mercy are not exhausted, his compassion is not spent; They are renewed each morning—great is your faithfulness! The LORD is my portion, I tell myself, therefore I will hope in him. The LORD is good to those who trust in him, to the one that seeks him; It is good to hope in silence for the LORD’s deliver-ance. (Lamentations 3:20-26) For months now, over and over again, we have endured the coronavirus itself, the growing numbers of infected and dying, the loss of our sense of “normal,” etc. And yet, our faith invites us to “call to mind” the persistent mercies of the Lord, God’s faithfulness, (v. 21-22). Indeed, after crying out to the Lord, we are drawn to the author’s recognition that “it is good to hope in silence for the Lord’s deliverance,” (v.26). After the wailing and grinding of teeth in the darkness, in the silence, we discover that God is near and always has been near! In the season of Advent, may we share our reasons for hopefulness with one another. Let us share our faith through good deeds, attentive communication, and thoughtful prayers. Dispensation from obligation to attend Sunday Mass Granted to the People of the

Catholic Diocese of Green Bay On Monday, October 5, Bishop Ricken reinstated the dis-pensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass in the diocese until further notice. Even with the reinstatement, we will continue to celebrate the Mass publically every weekend for those who are able to attend and willing to strictly follow the proper health protocols.

During this time of increased infection, our parish will to be even more vigilant in observing the health protocols shared in the diocesan guidelines to prevent the spread of disease and allow as many people as is safe to come to Mass without fear of infection. The wearing of masks is mandatory at Masses celebrated throughout our diocese. Thank you for your support and compliance as we as a community of faith come together to worship in safety.

FEAST OF FAITH What is the Mass? There is no simple answer to that question. The Church uses many different images and terms to describe our most important prayer. The Mass is the celebration of the Eucharist, a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” It is the Lord’s Supper. It is the Breaking of the Bread. It is the memorial of the Lord’s passion, death, and res-urrection. It is the Holy Sacrifice, in which the sacri-fice of Christ on the cross is perpetuated. It is the holy and divine liturgy, the sacred mysteries. It is the source and summit of our Christian lives, the new covenant, the work of the Holy Spirit, the paschal mystery. The many different words and images that we use when we speak of the Mass are not signs of confusion, but of wonder at what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1328) calls the “inexhaustible richness” of the Eucharist. The Mass, our greatest prayer and our deepest mystery, is celebrated every day, many times a day, the world over. FIESTA DE LA FE Iglesia peregrina… Nuestra participación en la Misa requiere que peregrinemos desde el hogar hasta la igle-sia parroquial. Realmente nuestra preparación comienza en casa, desde que nos disponemos a la participación y emprendemos la peregrinación. Esto nos recuerda que la Iglesia, en esencia, es peregrina y que sigue esperando la venida del Emmanuel, no sólo del Dios que nace entre nosotros, sino del Dios que, en la persona de Cristo, ven-drá de nuevo, de Jesús, cuyo nombre significa: Dios sal-va. Aunque caminamos y nos desplazamos a muchos lugares, esta peregrinación es particularmente significati-va porque nos reunimos con un mismo fin, celebrar el misterio pascual de Cristo: su pasión, muerte y resurrec-ción. El congregarnos en la casa de la Iglesia, haciendo a un lado nuestras diferencias naturales, para hacernos una voz, un solo pan y un solo cáliz reafirma la posibili-dad de caminar juntos hacia Dios, de unir nuestra alaban-za, de alimentarnos para el viaje y de celebrar por ade-lantado el Reino de Dios anunciado por Jesús. Por eso es que caminamos con un fin, un fin que puede ir más allá de nuestra propia visión, si se quiere, pero que en la perspectiva de Dios, es tan concreto y tan veraz, como el pueblo que se reúne y camina con alegría a la casa de la Iglesia. —Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. L M N P La raız de nuestra mision en St. Willebrord es proclamar la Palabra de Dios y servir a todos. Mensaje de Nuestro Pastor: La noticia de que hay un par de vacunas para COVID-19 que están casi listas para la producción y distribución es una gran manera de terminar el año de la iglesia y comenzar uno nuevo. Con esa noticia comenzamos la temporada de Adviento este año, la temporada de esperanza y expectativa. Sin embargo, siempre hemos tenido razones para esperar independientemente del

"advenimiento" de vacunas eficaces. ¡Dios vive! ¡Dios salva! ¡Dios es misericordioso y amoroso! Las promesas de Dios permanecen. Por eso tenemos esperanza. A lo largo del mes de noviembre, he vuelto a leer un texto de las Escrituras que sólo se escucha alrededor del Jueves Santo y el Viernes Santo, y ocasionalmente se utiliza en las liturgias para funerales. El Libro de las Lamentaciones 3:17-26 es uno de esos textos bíblicos que nos sirve muy bien. El escritor se lamenta expresando su pesar y el de toda la comunidad que ha sufrido la des-trucción y exilio de Jerusalén. El libro es oscuro o tenebroso con imágenes de tristeza y aflicción, excepto por algunos versos en el texto citado anteriormente. En medio de este libro de cinco capítu-los, en medio del tercer capítulo, como un punto de pivote, es el siguiente: “Pero yo lo recuerdo, lo recuerdo y me quedo abrumado. He aquí lo que sugeriré a mi corazón para cobrar confianza: Las bondades del Señor no se han acabado, ni se han agotado sus misericordias. Nuevas son cada mañana, grande es su fidelidad. "¡Mi porción es el Señor!", yo me digo; por eso en él espero. El Señor es bueno para el que en él confía, para el alma que lo busca. Bueno es esperar en silencio el socorro del Señor." (Lamentaciones 3, 20-26). Durante meses, una y otra vez, hemos aguantado el coronavirus en sí, el creciente número de infectados y moribundos, la pérdida de nuestra idea de "normal", etc. Sin embargo, nuestra fe nos invita a "hacer memoria" de las misericordias persistentes del Señor, la fidelidad de Dios, (v. 21-22). En efecto, después de gritar al Señor, nos atrae el reconocimiento del autor de que "es bueno espe-rar en silencio la liberación del Señor" (v.26). Después del llanto y desesperación en las tinieblas, por el silencio, descubrimos que Dios está cerca, ¡y siempre ha estado cerca! En la estación del Adviento, compartamos nuestras razones de esperanza el uno con el otro. Compartamos nuestra fe a través de buenas obras, comunicación cordial y oraciones reflexivas. ¡La liberación del Señor está cerca!
