Welcome...

Twenty eight brave mensigned up to take part inSt Wilfrid’s Hospice first eversponsored ‘Hike in Heels’,which saw them take to thestreets of Chichester oneSunday morning in May.

The new challenge gavemen the chance to ‘dressup’ and teeter their wayaround a one-mile course inhigh heels and was the

ideal opportunity for themto get together with theirmates, have a bit of a laughand enjoy a slightly differentmorning’s entertainment.

All that was required fromour walkers was an averagelevel of fitness – enough toraise their pint lifting armwithout any undue stress aswell as raising at least £100each in sponsorship money!

Fame came to five of ourfundraisers who were invitedto appear on the BBC’s OneShow which helped promoteour chaps charitable efforts! The team met up withChris Evans and Angela Ripponand appeared on Rippon’sBritain news section of theshow.

A big thank you to all our‘ladies’ who helped raiseawareness of the Hospicenationally and certainlyraised more than a smile forSt Wilfrid’s – just over£8,000. Don’t forget to inviteall your mates to join youwhen we have announcedthe date for next year!

As the Hospice moves evercloser to celebrating itsjubilee year in 2012, we areinviting people connectedwith the Hospice to become25th Anniversary Patronsand work alongside existingPatrons to promote ourexcellent work in thecommunity. We aredelighted to announce thatPhil Packer has agreed to bea 25th Anniversary Patron.

So, Phil, tell us a littleabout yourself.

“Whilst recovering frominjuries sustained in theArmed Forces I set myselfgoals to raise money forcharities. I’ve now retired

from the Army and returnedto live in West Sussex wheremy life now is supportingyoung people that are goingthrough a difficult time. Ifounded the BritishInspiration Trustwww.britishinspirationtrust.orgwhich will build a Centre ofInspiration in West Sussexfor young people facingadversity.”

What is your connectionwith St Wilfrid's Hospice?

“My great friend, Jean, wasdiagnosed with cancer thisyear. We met in 2002 whenshe was Mayor of Chichesterand I was serving asAdjutant at RoussillonBarracks. Initially told shehad three weeks to live, sheactually died in a matter ofdays. Her last wish was todie with dignity and StWilfrid’s Hospice helped herto fulfill that wish.”

Why have you acceptedthe role of 25thAnniversary Patron for theHospice?

“We might not like to talk

about it, but death comes tous all. Having had theopportunity to meet thestaff at St Wilfrid’s and seethe incredible work they do,I was humbled to be askedto serve as a 25th

Anniversary Patron. I deeplybelieve in their work helpingpatients, their families andfriends. Chichester is mycommunity, my home and itis important for me to giveback to our community.”

And hello and welcome toHollyoaks star Danny Macwho says, “As a local ladwith close connections tothis amazing charity I amextremely honoured anddelighted to be supportingSt Wilfrid’s Hospice in its25th Anniversary Year.”

Could you tell oursupporters a little bitabout yourself?

I was born in Bromley,Kent and grew up inPagham attendingChichester College where I

trained in acting. Therefollowed three years trainingat The Arts EducationalSchool, London prior to myfirst job in the West EndMusical ‘WICKED’ andsubsequently being cast asthe role of Dodger Savage inChannel 4 soap ‘Hollyoaks’.

And what is your linkwith the Hospice?

I am proudly linked to theHospice via my Mum whohas been a Nurse there formany years. I am extremelyproud of the person she is,how hard she works andhow much she loves andcares about the job she does

Why is your role as 25thAnniversary Patronimportant to you?

I think it is easy to forgetpeople like my Mum and hercolleagues who are incrediblycaring people who have theirown lives and problems, which they leave behindwhen they go to work andcare wholeheartedly forothers. And if I am in theslightest position to bring thisinformation to the attentionof just one other person thenI’d like to do that so as tokeep this wonderful place upand running in mycommunity, one I’m veryproud to be part of.

Liam Hook had always wanted to walk up Mount Snowdon. So one dark cold winter’s evening he suggested the idea tohis friends, Charlotte, Oliver and Christopher and betweenthem they agreed to join him and raise money for charity. At the time Charlotte’s Mum, Bernadette Wilkinson, had beendiagnosed with lung cancer and was under our care (sadlyBernadette has since died) and they chose to raise funds forthe Hospice.

The four friends have raised around £1,500 and are trulyoverwhelmed by the generosity of their friends and family. So are we – well done!

By kind invitation ofSir Jeremy Thomas, LavantSupport Group took over hislovely East Lavant gardenone Sunday in May andhosted a coffee morningselling plants, cakes andbooks. Although a slightlychilly morning, this did notdeter the many people whocame raising £335 for theHospice. Supporters of the Jack Edmonds Memorial Fund turned out on alovely sunny Saturday morning to sell sunflowers for theHospice. Thanks to the co-operation of staff at Sims Williams, who filled their windows with sunflowers, the collectors had acentral venue from which to venture forth.

Angela, our magnificent Town Crier, proclaimed the good newsabout the fund, the man to whom it is dedicated and the workof the Hospice; so enthusiastic was she that her voice failed hertowards the end of the morning!

All the collectors reported wonderful feedback from peoplewho had been touched by the care given by the Hospice and£547 was raised. The Jack Edmonds Memorial fund has alreadyraised in excess of £8,000. Please help us to continue to supportthe wonderful work of theHospice; we will all, inevitably, be touched by theneed for their care, if not forourselves for someoneclose. Once again, thankyou Arundel. Jenny Edmonds, ArundelSupport Group.

Selsey awoke to a blustery, overcast day on Sunday 29th May.However, the lack of sunshine did not deter over 620 visitorstaking the garden trail around the town to view the 17 privateand two public gardens on display.

The day raised £4,236.78 which has been shared equallybetween St Wilfrid's Hospice and the Manhood Wildlife andHeritage Group.

Thank you to all the garden owners who kindly opened theirgardens for the day and everybody else who helped make theday such a resounding success.

So what happens to all thebooks that are donated tothe Hospice shops? Many arequickly snapped up by oursupporters and those that areleft on the shelves are soldon and recycled. Paper canonly be put through therecycling process seven timesbefore it turns into sludgehowever, even in this finalstage the paper is used tocreate tissue paper, kitchenrolls and loo rolls.

So the good news is that ifyou donate a book to theHospice we make money outof it either way AND continuewith our efforts to reduce theamount of paper-basedmaterial ending up in landfill.

Following retirement Julietdecided she wanted tomake use of skills andalthough apprehensiveabout taking on patientcare at the Hospice opted, instead, to be a receptionistin the main Hospice.

With the opening of theOrchard Centre in June anew role for receptionistsevolved which suits Julietwhose warm smile andwelcoming manner soonputs everyone at their ease.

Open every Wednesday, the Orchard Centre providesa calm atmosphere wherepatients, families, friendsand carers can relax andenjoy a chat amongstfriends. Whilst here ourvisitors can find out whatelse is on offer throughoutthe day, such as creativeclasses, exercise groups orcomplementary therapies.

As a ‘Meet and Greet’

volunteer, Juliet, finds hernew role much morefocused and quite differentfrom her job in mainreception which involvedanswering a multitude ofquestions, taking phonecalls and serving in theshop. For Juliet, firstimpressions definitelymake a lasting differenceto our visitors as she feelsit is important they feel atease and want to pay us areturn visit!

She says, “Numbers aregrowing. Families andpatients on the ward popdown to see us and carerswho bring in their lovedones often stay for a chatand a cup of coffee. Forsome it is a surprise to seethe variety of activities onoffer in which they can beactively involved.

In April, we were thrilled tolearn that the Hospice hadbeen awarded a £25,000grant by the Garfield WestonFoundation, a grant-givingfoundation established in1958 to support UKregistered charities. Thegrant was given specificallyfor utility costs, includingwater, electricity, gas andtelephone charges. As we allknow, energy costs haverisen significantly in recentyears, and St Wilfrid’s is notimmune - this generousgrant will greatly assist us inpaying for these vitalservices.

“In with Mumford & Sons and out with Barry White!” that’swhat our new Head of Education, Michele Booth, said asshe entered the Hospice Seminar Room and spotted herpredecessor’s ‘antiquated’ CD collection on her first day ofwork at the Hospice!

However, apart from throwing out Jenny Buckley’sgolden oldies, Michele knows that there is nothing fuddyduddy about Jenny whose innovative ideas have madeSt Wilfrid’s one of the leading Hospice Education Centresof today.

Moving down from London and living just round thecorner from the Hospice Jenny first joined St Wilfrid’s as aBank Staff Nurse. From here she was offered a permanentposition by Matron Pat Camilleri who told Jenny that aTutor post was being created and she should apply for theposition. So she did, thinking it was a part time role whichwould work alongside caring for her three young children. It was only at the interview stage that she found out itwas a full time position!

But she accepted the job, juggling childcare with her rolewhich, at first, was split between Education and workingwith the Clinical Nurse Specialist team. Over the course oftime Jenny has concentrated more on Educationproducing the Advanced Communications Course, workingwith Help the Hospices on Outreach Training anddeveloping a link with Winchester University to run one ofthe first degree courses in Palliative and End of Life Care.

Like Jenny, Michele qualified as a nurse with her first jobworking as a Staff Nurse at St Catherine’s Hospice inCrawley. From here she worked for four years on agynaecological ward after which it was back to education

looking after 11-18 year olds with life threateningillnesses at the Valence School in Kent.

In the last 18 years Michele has worked as a DistrictNurse, was heavily involved with teaching at the KingEdward VII Hospital in Midhurst prior to its closure andlatterly as a Practise Educator and Leader of theCommunity Team at The Rowans Hospice.

She says, “The concern you have for patients is easilytransferred to students – still supporting people througha difficult time in their life. If you are a care giver youlook after students in the same way.”

Now set for new challenges Jenny is looking forward toretirement, undertaking a Master’s Degree in Creative Writingat West Dean College and wants to write a novel whilstMichele is ready, willing and able to step into her shoes!

L-R Jenny and Michele

Out With the Old and in with the New!

I first met Jenny when Istarted at St Wilfrid's in1997; by that time theeducation department shedeveloped was alreadydoing great work. I wasstruck by Jenny’s passion forher work and the drive thatshe had to ensure that thetraining she gave to staffmade a real difference. Inparticular I recall her tellingme how important it wasthat our courses helpedthose who were working incare homes and caring fordying people.

Jenny has worked tirelesslyto build St Wilfrid's Hospicea fantastic reputation forproviding high qualityeducation and training and

we are all enormouslygrateful to her for doing this.I know there are hundredsof students too who havelearnt so much from Jenny, some of whom had notstudied for some time andgained a new foundconfidence due to hersupport and encouragement.

I thank Jenny for being agreat colleague to workwith, for her endlessenthusiasm and tremendoussupport to me over theyears. We all wish her a veryhappy retirement on hernext great adventure!

The nursing team at StWilfrid’s have been entered fora Nursing Times Award torecognise their successfulwork to prevent falls amonginpatients on the ward. Somefalls are unfortunately, inevitable when people arevery sick and frail, but bycompleting risk assessmentsand implementing individualcare plans and equipment forpatients who are at risk, thenursing team has beenextremely successful inreducing the number of fallsthat occur.

The nurses were givenextensive training on assessingpatients at risk, includingscenarios and role play thatgave them some insight intohow it feels to be vulnerablewhen moving and prone tofalling.

obstacles when your abilitiesare compromised. By usingthe props which altered ourvision and made our legs veryswollen and cumbersome, wewere able to experience justhow awkward moving wasand how vulnerable we hadbecome.

“The key is to minimise anycontributing factors thatincrease a person’s risk ofhaving a fall. Whilst we can’talways prevent a fall we canalways minimise the risk.”

Whatever the outcome of theaward, this initiative has beena great success in improvingpatient care and safety.
