Rights Respecting Notification (from Mrs Smith)

This week, school council elections have been happening in

class. All children were given the opportunity to apply for this

role and we had more children than ever before apply! Each

class discussed Article 12, and the British value of democracy.

The school councillors were voted in by their classmates and

a huge well done to all of the elected children below. Also, a

huge well done to all of the children who applied but did not

get the role. You have all been amazingly brave and gracious!

As always, I look forward to working with the school council.

Child initiated learning in action!

shapes. They were able to think critically by working together

and deciding what resources they could use to create a rec-

tangle.

100 Year Anniver-sary of World War One To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War One, St Wilfrid's is go-ing to make a display of hand craft-ed poppies. We would like each child to make at least one poppy to go on the display. As the event is so signifi-cant we would like to invite parents and carers to join in with this by making poppies too. They can be knitted, crocheted, sculpted, and painted; whatever takes your fancy. We are plan-ning on displaying them both indoors and outdoors. There are lots of ideas and patterns on the internet. All poppies need to be handed into school by 29th October. The final cascade will be on display from Tuesday 6th November so everyone will be able to see them.

LATE ARRIVALS!

Registration begins at 9.00am.

Children arriving after 9.00am will be marked as late.

We have been celebrating and learning about Black His-

tory Month in school during the month of October. All of

the classes have focused on different people who have

played a significant role such as Martin Luther King, Rosa

Parkes, Jackie Robinson and Ruby Bridges considering

the actions and messages they delivered and why they

are so important. A big well done to all of the children

who shared their learning in our whole school assembly,

especially Finn Walker in Y3/4 who had created his own

song which he performed brilliantly.

On Tuesday morning, the children in KS1 went on

a walk around Northenden linked to their Geogra-

phy topic ‘What would Beegu see if he visited our

school?’ The children enjoyed exploring different

human and physical features that can be found in

the local area plus listening to a little bit of infor-

mation about Northenden Cricket Club, where

they were lucky to have a drink and biscuit.

Able Maths Day at Newall Green with Yr 6

This week some of the year 6s were able to take part in an exciting Able Maths Day at Newall Green. The event was

run by specialist maths tutor/consultant,Pete Hall. Pete has a wealth of experience as a headteacher, CPD tutor, LA

advisor and a specialist maths tutor, running workshops for children in schools nationally and internationally. The

workshop was full of exciting, age appropriate problem solving activities. Many of the activities utilised ICT and all of

the activities were challenging and fun!

Great British Book Off winner and a selection of photos from The book Bus Day

What a fabulous day! On Thursday 18th October St Wilfrid’s held their first ‘The Great British Book

Off’, where children baked and decorated the most amazing cakes and biscuits, that had been in-

spired by books. The competition was very tight, with some very imaginative creations. But, after

much deliberation, finally 3 biscuits and 3 cakes were placed.

In the biscuit category, 3rd place was awarded to George Owen for his reindeers, from Fake Santa.

2nd place was Layla Hasan for her Harry Potter inspired gingerbread men and in 1st place was

Katherine Pond with her library of books.

Then, in the cake category, 3rd place was awarded to Huzaifa Irfan for his Superworm inspired

cakes. 2nd place went to Imogen Lynton for her Harry Potter choosing hats, which were filled with

smarties, telling the child which house they’d be in. Finally, in 1st place was Imogen Paton whose

cupcakes told the story of The Hungry Caterpillar.

The fun didn’t end there. Throughout the day, the children went to visit the Book People’s Book Bus,

which Year 1 described as being ‘Amazing’. Every class was able to look at their large selection of

books. Some children were busy buying books, and others were busy adding quite a few to their

Christmas list.

A big thank you for all your support, and the second book event is already being planned.

On Monday, Key Stage 1 and 2 came together to share their SQUIRT book. Everyday, the children

are able to enjoy 10 minutes of SQUIRT (Super Quiet UnInterrupted Reading Time), where their

teacher will read to them.

It was clear to see that all the children are thoroughly enjoying the books and it was great to see such

a variety of genres. Ask your child which book their class is reading.

Remember, reading for 10 minutes every day, can help you relax, learn and feel good. With half term

starting, here are some tips for how you can inspire your child to read for 10 minutes a day;

Set aside family reading time and show your child that reading is important to you

Help your child to think beyond books – they can read magazines, newspapers and comics too

Any time is reading time! Your child could read on the bus or in the park

Take your child to the library to open a world of stories, imagination and discovery

Encourage your child to read favourite stories over and over again

Happy reading!
