The POPULATION AND VITAL STATISTICS REPORT is prepared and published by the Statistical

Office, Central Planning Division, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

This report presents statistics on live births, deaths, marriages and divorces for the period 2013 –

2015. For comparative purposes, historical data for up to ten (10) years is presented.

Population data are obtained from the decennial Population and Housing Census conducted by the

Statistical Office. Statistics on vital events are obtained from administrative records of the Registry

Department where all vital events are recorded. The Chief Statistician and staff of the Statistical

Office express gratitude for the assistance and support provided by the staff of the Registry

Department and the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment. The latter has

responsibility for coding the mortality data obtained from the Registry Department.

Notification of errors, omissions and suggestions for improvement in the format and content of

future publications will be appreciated.

There are nineteen (19) Administrative Districts in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where

the registration of births and deaths take place. However, for statistical reporting

purposes, the Statistical Office has regrouped the births and deaths to reflect the usual

residence of mothers within the respective census divisions rather than Administrative

Districts. This facilitates easy comparison of vital events with other socio economic

statistics produced by the Statistical Office.

In the case of live births, data is grouped according to age of mother, sex of baby, order of

birth/parity, month when birth took place, status (legitimate or illegitimate)and usual

place of resident of mother at the time of birth. Data on deaths are also grouped by sex,

month and usual place of residence. The cause of death is grouped by disease category in

conformity with the new Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) list 6/67 for

tabulation of ICD-10 mortality.

The activities of data collation and tabulation are done by the end of the first quarter in the

current year. The lag in providing vital statistics is about three (3) months. Late

registration especially for births occurring in the month of December, affects the timely

dissemination of vital statistics.

METHODOLOGY

LIVE BIRTH

The complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the

duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows other evidence of life,

such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary

muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached. Each product

to such a birth is considered to be live born.

STILL BIRTH

A stillbirth is a baby born with no signs of life at or after 28 weeks gestation.

CRUDE BIRTH RATE

The Crude Birth Rate indicates the number of live births per 1,000 population in a given year.

FETAL DEATH

A fetal death is formally defined as death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its

mother of a product of conception irrespective of the duration of pregnancy.

DEATH

Death is the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after birth has taken place.

A death can only occur after a live birth has taken place.

CRUDE DEATH RATE

The Crude Death Rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 population in a given year.

INFANT MORTALITY RATE

The Infant Mortality Rate is the number of deaths to infants under 1 year of age per 1,000 live

births in a given year.

CONCEPT AND DEFINITION

NEONATAL MORTALITY

A neonatal death is defined as a death during the first 28 days of life (age 0 – 28 days). Neonatal

mortality is broken down into early and late neonatal mortality. Early neonatal mortality refers to

death of an infant during the first 6 days of life (age 0 – 6 days). Late neonatal mortality refers to

death of an infant age 7 – 28 days.

POST NEONATAL MORTALITY

Post neonatal mortality refers to infant deaths after 28 days but before attaining 1 year of age.

RATE OF NATURAL INCREASE

The rate of Natural Increase is the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a

given year due to surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths as a percentage of the base population.

LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH

Life expectancy at birth is defined as the average number of years that a new-born could expect to

live if he or she were to pass through life subject to the age specific mortality rates of a given period.

TOTAL FERTILITYRATE

The total fertility rate (TFR) is the average number of children that would be born to a woman by

the time she ended childbearing if she were to pass through all her childbearing years conforming

to the age-specific fertility rates of a given year.

GROSS REPRODUCTIVE RATE

The gross reproductive rate (GRR) is the average number of daughters that would be born to a

woman (or group of women) during her lifetime if she passed through her childbearing years

conforming to the age-specific fertility rates of a given year.

CRUDE MARRIAGE RATE

The marriage rate (also called the crude marriage rate) is the number of marriages per 1,000 total

populations in a given year. This rate is calculated using the number of marriages, not the number

of people getting married and includes both first marriage and remarriages.

DIVORCE RATE

The divorce rate (or crude divorce rate) indicates the number of divorces per 1,000 populations in

a given year. The rate is calculated using the number of divorces

LIVE BIRTHS HIGHLIGHTS 2013 – 2015

An average of 1,797 live births was recorded over the three year period 2013-2015.

The total number of live births for the year 2013 was 1,738; in 2014 there were

1,841 and 1,813 in 2015.

There was little variation in the Crude Birth Rate (CBR) between 2013 and 2015.

The CBR was at its highest in 2014, with 16.7 live births per 1000 population.

The sex ratio at birth fluctuated during the three year period under review. There

were 103 males per 100 females in 2013, 98 males to 100 females in 2014 and 102

males to 100 females in 2014.

In 2013 and 2014, births to teenage girls as a percentage of total births, remained

virtually unchanged. However, between 2014 and 2015 births to teenage girls

declined by 2.6 percentage points.

Over the three (3) year period, the proportion of births to women in age group 15 –

29 years decreased marginally from 50.5 percent in 2013 to 50.0 percent in 2015. A

corresponding increase is noted for women in age group 30-39, where proportion of

births to women in this age cohort increased by 2.9 percentage points, from 28.9

percent in 2013 to 31.8 percent in 2015.

During the review period, over 60 percent of total registered births were to women

who reported they had no occupation1 at the time of registration.

Births to unmarried women (Illegitimate births) accounted for the largest

percentage of total births. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, illegitimate births accounted for

82.9 percent, 84.4 percent and 86.0 percent of total births respectively.

MORTALITY HIGHLIGHTS 2013– 2015

An average of 943 registered deaths was recorded over the three year period 2013-

2015.

The Crude Death Rate (CDR) was 8.4, 9.1 and 8.0 per 1000 population in 2013, 2014

and 2015 respectively.

The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) fluctuated during the period under review. The Infant

Mortality Rate declined steadily from 18.4 per 1,000 live births in 2013 to 14.3 per

1,000 live births in 2015. This decline was driven by a reduction in the neonatal

category (0 to 28 days of age).

In 2015, the total number of still births amounted to 36, the largest number of still

births recorded for the period under review.

In 2015, Life Expectancy at Birth was 76.5 for females and 70.6 for males. In 2015, the

expectation of further life for individuals who reached age 95 was approximately 3

years.

There is a general trend for survivorship to the next age cohort to be higher for females

than their male counterparts.

MARRIAGE HIGHLIGHTS 2013– 2015

During the review period 2013-2015, there was an average of 534

marriages.

The Crude Marriage Rate (CMR) remained virtually unchanged over the

three year period. The CMR was 4.6 per 1000 persons in 2013, 4.8 in

2014 and 5.2 in 2015.

The month of December remains the most popular month for weddings.

The data reveals that females tend to marry at an earlier age than their

male counterparts.
