RIGHT TO LIFE SIGNATURE

AND MEDIA CAMPAIGN

Today marks the 44th anniversary of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made it legal to take the life of an unborn child through a mother's right to privacy. With abortion being legal we need to reach out to vulnerable pregnant women to give them life-affirming choices they don’t think they have. TODAY we are joining with Right to Life of Northeast Ohio and dozens of area churches in the annual Signature & Media Campaign. Volunteers are in the back of church accepting signatures that will be sent to our legislators to emphasize our beliefs and to collect donations to support the pro-life multi-media education that gets women to choose life. Thank you for helping us Build a Culture of Life!

A WORD FROM THE DEACON . . .

Last weekend I traveled with a group of men to the Abbey of the Genesee in New York for what has

become an annual retreat tradition for me. I have been doing this for about thirty years. We always go the third weekend of January. Here is their website if you would like to learn more about the Abbey: http://www.geneseeabbey.org/

Fr. Norm spoke at the weekend Masses on the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, about the need to take some time to reflect daily on how God has been present in our lives and how we have responded or failed to respond in gratitude for this. Besides this daily discipline, it is a long-standing tradition of our Church to make a “retreat”, a time away from our normal activities to spend time getting reacquainted with God, to examine the priorities of life, and to make concrete and practical resolutions for improvement. Retreats can be a powerful step toward personal conversion. This tradition is, of course, as ancient as Jesus himself. He spent 40 days in the desert praying and fasting to prepare for the important work ahead (see Lk 4:1-13). Those were days of retreat. Most of us are not going to spend 40 days on retreat. I do, though, want to encourage you to make these daily reflections a part of your routine and to consider making time for a more formal retreat. We will be doing a Mission (a sort of retreat) here on three evenings during Lent, so be on the lookout for more information about it!

. . . DEACON BOB

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

The Gospel tells us that Jesus “withdrew” when John the Baptist was arrested. It is important to know when to withdraw. Many disputes at home are about petty things. We may win an

argument but damage the relationship. Knowing when to withdraw from conflict is the Spirit’s gift of wisdom and the reward is peace.
