Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 24, 2014 “Whatever you bind on earth
shall be bound in heaven; and
whatever you loose on earth
shall be loosed in heaven.”
— Matthew 16:19
THE ROCK Peter was Jesus‟ choice to lead the fragile band of apos-
tles. In today‟s Gospel, Simon is given a new name Peter,
the “rock.” In John‟s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shep-
herd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep.
And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we
think about the durable rocklike quality that Jesus needed
in a leader. Peter was appointed to his leadership position
for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and
Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mis-
take his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his
great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through.
They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. They make Pe-
ter a sympathetic and lovable person. They provide us
with the balance and humor that we need as we consider
our own roles in the universal church. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ST. VINCENT ALTAR SOCIETY 300 CLUB HISTORY OF THE 300 CLUB: The first drawing of the
300 Club was April 4, 1973. This Club was established as a
way for the Altar Society to make money to help the Parish.
It was started with the approval of Fr. Corrigan, and today
we still have some of the first members. During the past
year, the 300 Club donated $3,100 to the Fr. Corrigan
Tuition Assistance Fund and $2,968 for new cassocks and
surplices for the altar servers. We also provided fresh
flowers for the altar each week, hams for funeral luncheons,
new Christmas wreaths for the side aisles in church, and we
paid for the reception for the Confirmation class, among
other things. We want to thank all of our members for their
generous support. Your captain will be contacting you in
the next few weeks for the new year, which starts in
August. For only $1 per week, you have a chance to win
$100 each week. There is a special drawing at 9 months for
$250. At the end of the 300 Club year, there are two
drawings for $300 and two drawings for $200. This gives
you 57 chances to win for only $52 a year payable yearly,
semi-yearly, quarterly or monthly. Drawings are held on the
last Monday of the month, to cover 4 or 5 Monday‟s in the
month. In case a holiday falls on that Monday, the drawing
will be held on the last Wednesday of the month. Winners
will be notified by their captain. Membership limited to 300
people. You do not have to be a member of the parish to
join. WE HAVE MANY OPEN NUMBERS IN THE 300
CLUB THIS YEAR. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO
FILL THEM!! Please call Marilyn McCafferty at 330-836

FIRST STEP PROGRAMS 2014 First Step Programs: Continuing education
regarding marriage and divorce in the Catholic Church
Attempting to pick up the pieces of one‟s life after the
tragedy of divorce is complex and demanding. One of the
significant issues that a person faces is their place in the
Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I
am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive
communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I
decide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal
of the Diocese of Cleveland is continuing to offer its very
successful First Step Program in order to help individuals
deal with these questions. The Church‟s teachings on
marriage, divorce, and remarriage are often misunderstood.
This program is offered to help everyone, especially those
who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic
teaching in these areas. Representatives from the Ministry
to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and
Family Ministry will also be present to explain their
ministry to those who are divorced. Everyone is welcome
to: Deepen their knowledge of the Church‟s teaching on
marriage…Learn about the Church‟s ministry to the
divorced/separated in the Diocese…Hear the true facts
about the annulment process and how to submit a case
Discover a path to healing after divorce. In any endeavor,
taking the “first step” is always the most difficult. The
First Step Program helps individuals to navigate the path of
healing and closure, of which the annulment process is an
important aspect. Please refer to the Tribunal website
(www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal) for testimonials
about the program from past participants. The schedule for
the general meetings in 2014 is: Tuesday, 23 September
2014, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 p.m. and
Tuesday, 14 October 2014, at Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish, Cuyahoga Falls, at 7:00 p.m. We encourage
everyone to….Come to heal…Come to learn…Come open
to the spirit…Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer
requires any fees for this process. For more information
check our website: www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal
Or call: 216-696-6525/800-869-6525, ext. 4000.
LOST AND FOUND If you have left any items behind while at Mass, please

you!
