From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, Christmas Season: Wishing you all a blessed Christ-mas season! I hope your Christmas day celebrations went well, filling you with joy and peace. As you know, Christmas is too important to be over in 24 hours’ time. The mystery of Christ’s birth continues. The beauty of the Incarnation is a never-ending reality. Jesus becom-ing one with us is a continuous process. The vital impli-cation of his presence with us is that we are made sa-cred forever. We are sinful but sacred at the same time because of the Christmas mystery. When God has be-come one with us, why should we be afraid? Because the Lord of the Incarnation has pitched his tent with us, we can keep striving for all those things that make us better human beings and Christians. The Christmas sea-son, in the liturgical sense, goes on till the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord on January 10th. On January 11th, the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical year starts but Lent is going to catch up with us soon on Ash Wednes-day February 10th. So let us enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends. As someone has said: “Noel, Noel, Noel. No hell, no hell, no hell.” Because of Noel, there will be no hell for all of us who believe in this divine baby. He will save us from hell, evil, darkness, death, and sin. Feast of the Holy Family: This Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Family. Jesus lives with Mary and Joseph. Be-cause of Jesus, this family becomes a holy family. The same way, when Jesus lives in our families, our families become holy. The purpose of this feast is to let Jesus be part of all that we are in our families --- and strive for. As we look at all the struggles and dangers the Holy Family faced, we too draw strength to face life with grace because Jesus is with us. He is Emmanuel. Let him fill our families with his Spirit and love. Quotes from Pope Francis on Family: “It is normal that there be a quarrel between husband and wife…Maybe you’re angry, maybe a plate flew, but please remember this: never finish the day without making peace! Never, never, never! This is a secret, a secret to protect love and to make peace.” “We all know there is no such thing as the perfect family or a perfect husband or wife, and let’s not even talk about the perfect mother-in-law.... It’s us who do exist, sinners. Jesus knows us well and He tells us a secret: Never let the day end without apologizing.” Repair My Church (RMC): Please see in this bulletin the names of all those who have so far donated to the

RMC project. Thank you for your continuous goodwill and generosity toward St. Veronica parish. If you have donated but your name is not on that list, please call the parish office immediately. Some of you may like to do-nate tax-deductible dollars for this project before the end of the year. Please rush! If someone wants to do-nate only in the New Year, most welcome! It doesn’t matter when you give but if you could give soon, it would make it possible for us to do three things in our church in summer of 2016: new painting, new carpet-ing, and refurbished pews. These three items will cost $160,000. New Year 2016: What is the meaning of the “New Year”? There is nothing out there that is new. Time flows continuously like a river. It’s we who have divid-ed time as days, weeks, months, and years. Seconds and minutes and hours keep ticking inexorably. But all these divisions of time are of human making. Time in itself is nothing new. What is really new is what we bring to time. What new thing that we will bring into this chunk of time called the New Year 2016? If we do not bring a fresh outlook and a desire to start anew and a concern to change ourselves for the better, then there would really be no difference between the last day of 2015 and the first day of 2016. The New Year is a reminder that God is giving us more time to catch up with things deeply human and deeply divine. It is more time for us to get it right. It is another opportunity for us to try again and rearrange our lives --- and to become the persons ac-cording to God’s plan and purpose. Year of Mercy---Dec. 08, 2015 to Nov. 20, 2016: Let’s keep the Year of Mercy in our minds and hearts. It is the Jubilee year Pope Francis has declared for us to ex-perience God’s mercy and share it with others. How shall we become the living sacraments of God’s mercy? New Year’s Day Prayer: Dear Lord, So far this year I’ve done well. I haven’t gossiped, I haven’t lost my temper, I haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I’m very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on I’m probably going to need a lot of your help. Amen.

Happy New Year! Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Thank you to the following people who have thus far donated to the Repair My Church (RMC) Project. The scope of this $250,000 project will include painting the interior of the Church, refinishing and refurbishing the pews, replacing the carpet, upgrading the lighting and sound system, repairing the exterior doors, installing a security system, renovating the vestibule bathroom, and sprucing up the vestibule. The first goal for the Summer of 2016 is to take care of the paint, carpet and pews. The total of these three projects is $160,000.

Reflecting on the Word

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

What does family look like? Single parents or a couple with one or more children, belonging by birth or adoption, an extended family or friends, all of the above? The Holy Family consisted of Jesus, his birth mother and his birth mother’s husband. Our Gospel offers us one of the few glimpses we have into their life together. The teenage Jesus gives Mary and Joseph a scare. Their re-sponse is typical of many frightened parents: they retrace their steps and, filled with anxiety, scurry to find him. Mary’s frustration is clear: “Why have you done this to us?” Jesus answers like many teens who wonder why their parents worry. Their family was complicated. Je-sus’ parents were not only human. He was the Son of God. Jesus is learning to respect his situation. Hannah’s prayers for a child were answered, unlike others who pray and do not conceive. Remember those families today. Such pain paralyzes some. Others find life through adoption, friendship, or outreach. Not all family relationships give life. Healing only comes through time. Whatever our experience of human family, we are all children of God, called to love one another with a love that makes our belonging to the human family visible. Healing, life-giving, unconditional love takes a lifetime to learn. So we too need to advance in wisdom, age, and favor before God and others. What does your family look like? Thank those who make your experience life-giving. Seek healing where your family has brought pain. Grow in love, however you can, so others can know the light of hope we cele-brate at Christmas. Dedicated to the Lord by baptism, may we advance in wisdom, age, and love. For prayerful reflection and discussion:

♦ Name the families to which you belong and de-scribe the relationships that make you a family.

♦ How can you nurture love that is both affirming and challenging so people have the skills needed to advance in wisdom, age, and favor today?

About the Cover Art World Meeting of Families Official Icon

Each World Meeting of Families (WMOF) has an iconic image that focuses on Jesus as the center of the family. The image inspires thoughts and emotions in relation to God and family. The 2015 image was painted by artist Neilson Car-lin, who converted to Catholicism after being drawn to its religious art. He unveiled his masterpiece at the Cathe-dral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. Carlin was motivated by the magnitude of the work, be-cause it was something that Pope Francis and the rest of the Church would see, and he hoped the image would draw all people closer to God. The child Jesus stands in the front of the image with the Blessed Virgin next to Him. Each figure is layered in the image according to the closeness of his or her rela-tionship to Christ. Saint Joseph stands behind Jesus, lay-ing his protective hand on Mary’s shoulder. Saints Ann and Joachim look at Jesus from the background. Jesus offers a blessing with His right hand, which is at the very center of the painting. The architecture of the image re-sembles that of the Baldacchino in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. In the right corner is the coat-of-arms of Pope Francis, and in the left corner is the coat-of-arms of the Archdiocese of Phil-adelphia.

One way Catholics everywhere can encounter the Jubilee Year of Mercy in their lives is by performing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, which we are all called to do by virtue of our baptism.

How will you show mercy during this Jubilee Year?

Corporal Works of Mercy Spiritual Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Counsel the doubtful Give drink to thirsty Instruct the ignorant Clothe the naked Admonish sinners Shelter the homeless Comfort the afflicted Visit the sick Forgive offenses Visit the imprisoned Bear wrongs patiently Bury the dead Pray for the living and the dead
