On this solemnity of Pentecost we remember Mary as the Virgin filled with the Holy Spirit (Hail Mary, full of grace) as we leave the confessional. We recall Mary being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit at the Incarna-tion as we receive Holy Communion. We recall Mary being made our mother at the foot of the Cross as we follow the will of God. We recall Mary holding together in perfect prayer the Apostles in the Upper Room as she witnessed the birth of the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit as we deal with our own weaknesses. The Blessed Mother will always be well pleased with us as we follow our vocation and the commandments of God by leading others to do likewise through the many ways that the power of the Holy Spirit can be manifested in us.
Fr. Euk
"'Rivers of living water will flow from within him who be-lieves in me.' He said this in reference to the Spirit." Riv-ers of living water. What does this image make us think of? Something active. Something dynamic and changing, yet constant and dependable. A river with living water is not stagnant; it is not silent, but rather it speaks. This river is not mucky or full of algae. This river is clear, beau-tiful, refreshing, and life-giving. It draws people to its banks by providing the kind of water that sustains life and the kind of scenery that is a joy to behold. Those who believe in Jesus will be like this river. Through the Spirit of Christ, which first came upon Christian be-lievers at Pentecost and which came upon us at our bap-tism, we become a source of "living water." Instead of being motionless, dull, murky, unproductive people, we are strengthened by God's power to be dynamic, refresh-ing, and life-giving. This isn't automatic, however. We must cooperate with the Spirit that has been given to us. Those of us who have received confirmation have been sacramentally gift-ed with the fullness of the Spirit, but that doesn't mean that the living water is flowing at full speed. As St. Paul wrote in his second letter to Timothy, we need to "stir into flame the gift of God" (1:6). The flame may be there, but if we don't fan it through prayer, virtuous living, spiritual formation, and frequent reception of the sacraments, then it will never burst forth with the full power that it could have. But let us take heart! Even this process of "fanning" is made easier when we call upon the Holy Spir-it to help us. For St. Paul reminds us today that "the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness."
Pastor’s Notes
Scripture Meditation
Fr. Johann Roten, SM wrote an article, Deep Memories: A Marianist Icon. He describes memories as “golden tunnels leading into the past.” Memories are experienced in the present and they are not indifferent. Some can hurt or hinder us or they can enthrall and inspire us. Some artists have a way of making memories alive – especially those of our Blessed Mother. In St. John’s Gospel disciples are depicted as personifications of people who have a bond with Jesus. Obviously Mary’s connection with the Passion and Death of Jesus is linked to the glorification of the Son of God when Jesus says, “Woman, this is your son,” and to the disciple, “This is your mother.” It is almost as if Jesus was giving them to us as a last will and testament. Jesus has made Mary a human help and support to do His work among us. This is why I placed the statue of Our Lady of Judea in the sanctuary area and the Icon of Mary during the months of May and October on the left wall. There is a Three O’clock Prayer: Lord Jesus, we gather in spirit at the foot of the cross with your Mother and the disciple whom You loved. We ask your pardon for our sins which are the cause of Your death. We thank You for remembering us in that hour of salvation and for giving us Mary as our Mother. Holy Virgin, take us under your protection and open us to the action of the Holy Spirit. St. John obtain for us the grace of taking Mary into our life, as you did, and of assisting her in her mission. Amen. Another interesting prayer is: May the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places through the Immaculate Virgin Mary. These prayers serve to show the intimate connection among Mary, God and us. This spiritual reunion is a source of strength and solidarity for the children of God. St. John depicts Mary as a strong woman and a holy virgin. She is the lady of the mantel who protects all who seek her and her Child. St. John reminds us that Jesus does not know members, but rather only disciples, daughters and sons. This Three O'clock Prayer also is an expression of our reconciliation with God and with Creation. That is, with people and nature. Mary is the model of what we never were and never will be. In Mary our deepest memories about ourselves can become the source and truth about God’s love for us and the beauty of our regeneration in Him.
