THE DIFFERENCE The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is that one often comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won’t. —Henry Ward Beecher

THE INSIDE SHOWS . . In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they are as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true: “What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Fire of Your Love: The Last Judgement

By Will Oliver “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time; but at that time your people shall be delivered, every one whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Daniel 12:1-2 In my many trips to the Vatican over the years, one of the highlights has always been seeing Michelangelo’s famous painting in the Sistine Chapel, The Last Judgement, painted between 1535 and 1541. Unfortunately, the low-lights are the throngs of people and the incessant call to either “be quiet” or “keep moving” – there is never enough time to take in the painting. The first time I saw it, I was simply overwhelmed. Michelangelo’s work has a way of doing that. I had always thought his David would be a life-sized carving in marble; I was not prepared for the 17’ statue that towers over you as you approach. The Last Judgement is much the same; it is overwhelmingly large. The first time I saw it, it had yet to be restored, so it was dark and dingy looking, but still impressive. The next time I saw it, it was simply stunning for the vivid and beautiful colors Michelangelo had originally painted with were fully restored. On subsequent visits, I learned to pay attention to specific sections of the painting upon each visit. And while I love the entire work of art, his portion depicted above, has always fascinated me the most. This portion of the painting is taken from the books of Daniel and Revelation in the Bible. St. Michael the Archangel is on the left, holding the smaller book – the Book of the Saved (Life); those who will enter Heaven at the Last Judgement. To his right is another angel holding the larger book, the Book of the Damned (Dead). This angel is unnamed, possibly one of the other archangels, though not Gabriel for he is elsewhere in the painting. Wingless angels blow their trumpets for the trumpets shall sound on Judgement Day. On the far right is a man who is clearly in distress for he has heard his name read from the Book of the Damned. Demons drag him down to hell, while below him, another misfortunate is being down to Hell. If you have never seen The Last Judgement, the Sistine Chapel, or St. Peter’s Cathedral, consider making a pilgrimage to Rome. Every Catholic should visit the Vatican at least once.

Copyright © J. S. CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
