MASSES SUSPENDED THROUGH APRIL 5

A Message from Monsignor StackDear friends in Christ,

We received an update form the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Bishop Joel Konzen Monday evening, March 16:“Effective Tuesday, March 17, we will sus-pend all public Masses for the next three weeks including the weekends of March 21-22; March 28-29; and April 4-5. As new information and directives come out from the government, we will continue to evalu-ate and revise our provisions.”

St. Thomas Aquinas has canceled all Masses and church gather-ings through Sunday April 5 - we strongly urge you to stay home and indoors as much as possible. The government has suggest-ed no gatherings of 10 or more people. Social distancing is a key component in the containment and mitigation protocols that the experts have asked institutions and organizations to undertake. Please notify the church should you test positive for COVID-19, so that we may take the necessary precautions.

In the words of Bishop Joel Konzen “We can still unite in prayer. We can still care for our neighbors. We are still the Body of Christ.” We ask you to join in prayer for those who have con-tracted COVID-19, for healthcare workers and for those who may be vulnerable to illnesses like flu or coronavirus. Continue to encourage your communities to be aware and proactive, but not panic.

God Bless,Monsignor Daniel StackPastor, St. Thomas Aquinas

Todavía podemos cuidar a nuestros vecinos. Todavía somos el Cuerpo de Cristo “. Les pedimos que se unan en oración por aquellos que han contraído COVID-19, por los trabajadores de la salud y por aquellos que pueden ser vulnera-bles a enfermedades como la gripe o el coronavirus. Continúen alentando a sus comunidades a estar al tanto y proactivo, pero sin pánico.

Dios los bendiga,Monseñor Daniel StackPastor, Santo Tomás de Aquino

DEACON ED LAHOUSE IS CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF LIFE! He turned 60 on Wednesday, March 25. He moved to Atlanta with his wife Mary and their four children in 1978. He worked for Aetna for forty-one years, most recently as a General Man-ager of the southeastern branch office before he retired. He also served as a city councilman in both Enfield, Connecticut, and Los Alamitos, California. He was ordained a deacon on June 24, 1989, and has served our parish in many different ways. We recently asked him to reflect on some of the highlights from the past nine decades.

How does it feel to be 90?Deacon Ed: I find myself looking back over the years and the words I use are grateful and blessed for my family, for my church, and for the number of people who have reached out to me over the years.

What prompted you to become a deacon?Deacon Ed: I’ve been close to the church my whole life. My Uncle Bob was a Sulpician Priest, and I would spend a lot of time with him. He was a man I tremendously admired. I thought that I wanted to be a priest so in my final years of high school, I went to the seminary. In my senior year, my spiritual advisor encouraged me to take a year off to discern whether the priesthood was something I really wanted to pursue. I realized during that time that I would be happier as a married man with a family, but no matter where I lived, Connecticut, Los Angeles, San Antonio, or Syracuse, I was always active in the local parish community.

The first real step that pointed me toward the diaconate was when I made a Cursillo retreat in 1957. Before I went to Cursillo, things were just between God and me. I didn’t recognize that there were many people who were really disciples in between. When I came to St. Thomas Aquinas, I met Deacon Al Gallagher, Deacon Bill Keeling, and Deacon Don Nadeau and I was impressed by them and thought that being a deacon was the opportunity for which I had been looking for several years.

What have you enjoyed the most about your ministry?Deacon Ed: My wife Mary and I began an outreach of visiting and bringing communion to the sick. She would get a list of people who were in the hospital or who were homebound and she would call Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and scheduled them to make a visit. I got to know so many people through visiting the sick and I enjoyed the ministry. When I think about ministerial experi-ences, the ones that were out of the ordinary came from ministering to the sick and dying. I remember one instance when I went to visit a man who was dying. The family and I were praying the rosary around his bed and when we finished, he closed his eyes and died. I have witnessed God at work in ministering to the sick.

For what are you most grateful?Deacon Ed: I have always felt Jesus present in my life, but I didn’t always recognize it. When I was going through difficult times, espe-cially the losses of both Mary and then Sandy, I could just feel God’s love helping me to get through it. In fact, throughout my whole life there have always been key people who came at the right time to counsel me and to give me direction.

I’m also grateful for the church. I have just been so blessed by our priests and many priests have become very good friends.

What is your advice for a long and happy life?Deacon Ed: I talk to Jesus a lot, no matter what I’m doing. If I’m walking the dog, I’m talking to Jesus. If I have quiet time, I talk to Jesus. I’ve had a very happy life and lots of support from St. Thomas Aquinas.

Deacon Ed has also served the community as a founding member of North Fulton Community Charities. He served on their board for nearly 30 years and still serves on the advisory board. He has also been a member of the Alpharetta Ecumenical Clergy Association. We thank Deacon Ed for his service to our parish and community and wish him many more years of life and joy.

Monsignor Dan presents Deacon Ed LaHouse a Papal blessing on his birtthday.

Our Lenten Reconciliation Service that was scheduled for this Tues-day is canceled. While we are not

able to gather as a community for the Sac-rament of Reconciliation, we can examine our conscience and experience God’s mer-ciful love at home in many ways.

Pray the Penitential Psalms

Penitential psalms have been prayed by the faithful since antiquity. These psalms draw us into an intimate conversation between the psalmist who pours out his heart and God who is waiting with a com-passionate embrace.

In psalm 32, for example, the psalmist expresses the anguish and the joy of confession. He discovers the freedom of confession after first resisting it, but when he can no longer keep silent, he confess-es his sins. Instead of shame, he feels immediate relief because he is filled God’s mercy. So overwhelmed is he by God’s grace, he cannot keep it to himself. He must share this good news with others.

Happy those whose offense is forgiven, whose sin is remitted.O happy those to whom the Lordimputes no guilt,in whose spirit is no guile.

I kept it secret and my frame was wasted.I groaned all day long, for night and day your handwas heavy upon me.Indeed my strength was dried upas by the summer’s heat.

But now I have acknowledged my sins;my guilt I did not hide.I said: I will confess my offense to the Lord. And you, Lord, have forgiven

the guilt of my sin.

So let faithful men and women pray to youin the time of need. The floods of water may reach highbut they shall stand secure.

You are my hiding place, O Lord;you save me from distress. You surround me with cries of deliver-ance.

I will instruct you and teach youthe way you should go;I will give you counselwith my eye upon you.

Be not like horse and mule, unintelligent, needing bridle and bit, else they will not approach you. Many sorrows have the wickedbut those who trust in the Lord, loving mercy surrounds them.

Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord, exult, you just!O come, ring out your joy,all you upright of heart.Besides psalms 32, the other penitential psalms are Psalm 6, Psalm 38, Psalm 51, Psalm 102, Psalm 130, Psalm 143. These psalms, as well as reflections on them, can be found on the U.S. Bishops website.

Examination of Conscience

Many resources for an examination of conscience are offered by various publish-ers and can be found online. One possi-bility is to use a passage from Scripture such as the Gospel passages used in year A for the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent. When the Second Vatican Council restored the catechumenate, the ancient scrutiny rites were once again a part of the Lenten rites for the Elect. The sto-ries of the woman at the well, the man born blind and the raising of Lazarus, with their baptismal overtones and their themes of mercy and deliverance, call the Elect and all the faithful to examine their conscience. Reading the story of the

man born blind for example may prompt certain questions to help examine one’s conscience such as, “Where have I been blind to God’s love?” or “What areas of my life are in need of God’s light?”

Another way to examine one’s conscience is to pray the Daily Examen, an ancient practice that is rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Examen, which is prayed at the end of each day, is a reflec-tion on where God’s presence has been or has not been felt throughout that day. Those who pray the Examen are invited to offer thanks as they review the day, asking questions such as: When did I most feel God’s presence today? When did I least feel God’s presence today? When was I most able to give and receive love today? and When was I least able to give and receive love today? Praying the Examen helps us to acknowledge our weaknesses and to look forward with joy to the day to come.

Pray the Lord’s Prayer

Pray the Lord’s Prayer daily. This prayer’s plea to forgive and to be forgiven calls us to continual conversion and encourages us to consistently trust in God’s mercy.

Practice Charity

The Church teaches that sin and grace are not individual but also social. This is to say that everything we say or do impacts someone else. Practice generosity. Call someone who is alone, reach out to the elderly, connect with someone with whom you have been out of touch, take the first step to heal a broken relationship.

Like the psalmist above, we who have been reconciled are called to be vessels of reconciliation for others. Perhaps there is no better time to practice charity so that we can remember that we are never quarantined from the love of God.

HOPE IS ALL AROUND USStewardship

SAINT OF THE MONTH

Saint Patrick, the “apostle to Ireland,” is one of the world’s most famous and celebrated saints. His missionary zeal arguably matched that of Saint Paul, whose missionary activities, though oftentimes a severe struggle, remained in the territories governed by Roman law. Saint Patrick, however, was the first recorded Christian missionary to evangelize beyond the bounds of Roman rule and into the darkness of what was then considered the end of the earth.

“Patricius” was born in Roman Britain around 385. His father was a public official and church deacon. He was kidnapped by Irish slave traders while in his mid-teens and forced into slavery; herding sheep on remote Irish hillsides under harsh conditions. Spending most of his time in solitude, he grew to trust in God and embrace a life of prayer. After six years, he made a dangerous and harrowing escape over land and sea that finally resulted in a return to his parents. They found him, at age 22, a serious visionary who sought holiness and friendship with Christ. Patrick entered the priesthood, and in time, was sent to evangelize the Irish. He was appointed the bishop of Ireland in 435 and established his see at Armagh in the north. From <http://catholicstewardship.com/2020/03/02/stewardship-saint-for-march-saint-patrick/>

Stay tuned next week for more information about St. Patrick.

DISCIPLES Are ordinary people who have experienced the love, forgiveness, presence, consolation and challenge of God through Jesus Christ. They have fallen in love with the Lord. Evangelize by example and are both courageous and articulate in their proclamation of Jesus and the difference he has made in their lives. Will freely pray with others, do volunteer work, witness how the Lord has worked in their daily experience, offer moral advice when asked, share spiritual books, CDs and DVDs with family, friends, and co-workers, all the while actively cultivating a discipleship response in those around them.

An Intentional Disciple is a good STEWARD, knowing that everything in life is a superabundant gift freely bestowed upon us by the Lord, both to enrich us but to bless and benefit others.
