SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER — MAY 10, 2015

A Note from Fr. Joe:

As the Easter Season continues, our Sunday Gospel passages reflect Jesus’ last will and testament, so to speak, as he addresses his disciples – and us – in increasingly intimate terms. Last week, it was the image of the vine and the branches. And now this Sunday Jesus calls us his friends. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends…I have called you friends.” Wow! Isn’t that incredibly comforting and profound? Of all the things that he could call those of us who follow him, Jesus chooses the word “friend.” Have we considered Jesus the Christ to be our friend? Probably we’ve thought of him as a guide and teacher, for he’s certainly those. But Jesus tells us that he’s much more than that – he’s a companion on our journey; he’s with us through thick and thin. Jesus definitely isn’t a “fair weather friend.” Friendship with and through Christ is based on trust, frankness, open and honest interaction, mutual understanding, and forgiveness. True Christian friendship doesn’t equate to mere sentimentality and it means far more than just pleasant relationships. Though we very likely won’t have to die for our friends, being a real companion can be serious and challenging at times. As St. Augustine once observed, “the love that we shower on friends in good times is proven in bad times.” In loving one another, as Jesus loves us, we make God’s friendship tangible. Who has made Jesus’ friendship tangible in our lives? Isn’t it an extra blessing when we can include our father and mother in response to that question? Over time, I honestly felt that my parents also became my friends. In memory of my Mom, my friend then, I sincerely wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all our Moms and those who take the role of mothers in our lives! And, of course, we unite in recalling all those mothers who have gone before us. If you’re fortunate enough to be with your Mom this Sunday, perhaps you could use the following blessing at table or otherwise: “Loving God. as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless our mother. Let the example of her faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, her family, may honor her always with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

During this month of May, we traditionally remember, in a special way too, the mother we all share in common – our Blessed Mother, Mary. She indeed is another companion on our journey. As Jesus’ mother and his first disciple, she can help show us the way. Mary understands what it is to be a spouse and parent, as well as a friend. Perhaps we can join in praying the Rosary after daily Mass in the Rosemont Chapel or incorporate that devotion into some part of our day. With St. Thomas of Villanova, we proclaim, “O blessed among women…We are all your children and you are our Mother; remember us.” (Sermon Easter Wednesday, 11) Yours in the friendship of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Joe

Stewardship Thought for the Week “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we should be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply be-cause we love Him.

UPDATE ON THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

AND TWO WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

September 21-17 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The world Meeting of Families will take place on September 21-27 and will be highlighted by a visit from Pope Francis. More than two million people are expected to descend upon the region to take part in the weeks’ activities, particularly the Papal Mass scheduled for Sunday, September 27th. Interest in the World Meeting of Families is extremely high with many expressing a desire to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Volunteer through Villanova University There will be a limited number of volunteer spots available for members of the Villanova community (age 18+) to serve during the Festival of Families planned for Saturday, September 26, on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Villanova volunteers will be able to serve together as a group but specific volunteer roles and time committed have not yet been determined. Those interested in this service opportunity should fill out the Villanova Volunteer Registration Form. Please note that there will be an additional, required volunteer registration process administered by the World Meeting of Families that includes a background check. This group of Villanova volunteers will be a small part of the approximately 10,000 that will be engaged to support the World Meeting of Families. It is expected that spots will fill quickly and demand will exceed available opportunities. Additional volunteer outreach may occur through other communities, such as parishes, companies and schools. To serve with fellow Villanovans, both steps of the registration process must be completed. Registration is a must. Go to http://www.1.villanova.edu/villanova/president/worldmeetingoffamilies.html go to Villanova’s website: www.villanova.edu, click “ABOUT” and scroll to Leadership and Offices, click Office Volunteer through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Volunteer through the Archdiocese Volunteer through the Archdiocese just opened the World Meeting of Families Volunteer Registration Portal. Go to www.worldmeeting2015.org, click on Volunteer and enter your information and you will be directed to Verified Volunteers for a background check. After your background check is completed, usually within 48 hours, you will receive an email inviting you BACK to sign up for the events. You will have the opportunity to donate the cost of your background check to The World Meeting of Families. Our Volunteer Support Team is ready to provide help at [email protected]. Thank you for dedicating your valuable time and talents during the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia!

ANNUAL BREAD FOR THE WORLD CAMPAIGN 2015

SPONSORED BY THE PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE

Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Moved by God’s grace in Jesus Christ, we reach out to our neighbors, whether they live in the next house, the next state, or on the next continent. This week we will focus on two programs that serve low income children locally both in Philadelphia and the suburbs: The National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Both programs are facilitated by the Nutritional Development Services (NDS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. School Lunch Program NDS partners with 101 parochial, charter and small Christian schools throughout the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. On an average day 15,900 lunches are served. The School Lunch provides a student with 1/3 of their daily requirement for calories and key growth nutrients. In School Year 2012-13, the nutrient standards for the School lunch program were changed. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of whole grains served, and an increase in the quantity and variety of fresh fruit and vegetables served. NDS uses the “Reach for the Stars” theme to encourage students to select and eat their daily servings of fresh fruit and vegetables. Based on family income, school lunch is available at a reduced price of $.40 or at no cost. For the 2014-15 school year, a full price lunch is $2.20 for K-8th grade and $2.30 for 9-12 grade per day. All meals are pre-ordered several weeks in advance. Monthly menus and order envelopes are sent home for families to complete and return to school. NDS assists participating schools by fully equipping them with a convection oven, refrigerator and freezer. NDS also maintains the equipment. NDS provides compensation to participating schools to cover the cost of running the program. School Breakfast Program NDS makes the School Breakfast program available to 64 schools, serving approximately 6,555 children each day. School Breakfast provides a student with 1/4 of their daily calories and key growth nutrients. A typical breakfast consists of a whole grain entrée such as an apple-cinnamon muffin, mini maple pancakes, or an egg & cheese bagel, a half-pint of low-fat or fat-free milk, and two servings of fruit, such as fresh fruit, applesauce, raisins, or 100% fruit juice. The School Breakfast program can be served…. * in the cafeteria * as a Grab ’N Go program, and then eaten in the classroom * served in the classroom during the homeroom period. Our students are arriving bright and early to satisfy their hunger! They are hungry for a great education and a well balanced breakfast and at St. Francis de Sales we are making sure they get both thanks to the NDS’ wonderful program. Sister Mary McNulty, IHM Principal Congress must review and renew child nutrition programs every five years and they are up for reauthorization in 2015. The Peace and Justice Committee will be hosting letter writing tables at the back of our churches the weekend of May 30 and 31, 2015. We ask that you sign letters to both Pennsylvania Senators to continue to fund child nutrition programs.

PARISH VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE

ARCHDIOCESAN MANNA FOOD DRIVE

Can you help with the Annual Archdiocesan MANNA Canned Food Collection the last two weekends in May? The Manna Canned Food Collection affords our faith community an opportunity to express our concern for needy people living within the geographic area of our own Archdiocese. Many struggling families and individuals turn to our emergency food cupboards for support during times of crisis. While all ages are represented in the faces of hunger, sadly the burden of poverty rests most heartily on our children. While children make up roughly 24% of our total population, they comprise one-third of the nation’s poor. During the 2000s, the number of poor people living in the suburbs grew by 64% — more than twice the growth rate in cities (29 percent). Hunger and Education Hungry Children are: 60% more likely to miss school 50% more likely to repeat a grade Twice as likely to be suspended from school Twice as likely to require special education. This information is from the Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. Help is needed distributing Manna bags the weekend of May 22/23 (at whatever Mass you plan to attend) and help is needed taking the bags to the Auditorium after the Mass you attend the weekend of May 30/31. We will deliver on June 1st. If you can help deliver the food to our sister parish of St. Cyprian’s in West Philadelphia, we can use your help! Contact Anne Murphy at the Parish Center at the 610-525-4801 or [email protected].

MANNA BAGS will be distributed at all of our Masses on the weekend of May 23 & 24. Kindly return your filled MANNA Bag (or your own grocery bags) to the Parish Center during the week of May 25-29 from 9:00am to 4:30pm or to the Rosemont Chapel the weekend of May 30-31, 2015 Canned food items in greatest need are: beef stew, tuna fish, pasta, soups, and low sugar cereals, coffee, tea or low sugar canned fruits. Your gift of food will be delivered to our sister parish, St. Cyprian’s Food Bank in West Philadelphia. Thank you.

SHARE THE

HARVEST

Our parish will be helping to feed people in need this summer by providing fresh produce to the food pantry at ElderNet in Bryn Mawr. Whether you love to garden, or just have a sunny spot in your yard, please consider growing a couple extra plants this spring to contribute to this worthy cause — (or you could purchase a few extra fruits or vegetables when you grocery shop). What better way to set a Christian example for your children or grandchildren than by sharing food with those less fortunate. Donations can be dropped off in the lobby of the parish center, Monday thru Wednesday, or in the back of the Rosemont Chapel after the 5:00pm Mass on Saturdays. Share the Harvest Ministry will begin collecting your home grown or purchased vegetables and fruit in mid-June and go until mid-September. If you have any questions or can help with delivery this summer, contact Parish Coordinator, Barb Gollin at 610-688-4168 or [email protected].

Catholics Confront Global Poverty This past Lent, our parish community fought global poverty through CRS Rice Bowl. We deepened our Catholic faith by exploring the richness of Catholic Social teaching. And now we have the opportunity to continue our engagement with Catholic Relief Services through Catholics Confront Global Poverty, an initiative of prayer, education and advocacy that aims to encourage our country’s leaders to act on behalf of the world’s poor and vulnerable. Interested in learning more? Visit confrontglobalpoverty.org and sign the Hunger Pledge. Thank you for your generous support for the CRS Rice Bowl Collection.

CATHOLIC

CHARITIES APPEAL

Giving Hope 2015

Dear Friends, Hope, like Faith, is a gift from God. The poor, the sick, the homeless, the vulnerable can’t give themselves hope. But, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you can. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal is a wonderful opportunity to share your blessings with the least fortunate among us. St. Paul, the co-patron of our Archdiocesan Basilica, tells us that the three most precious virtues are Faith, Hope and Love. They’re deeply interconnected. We live our Faith when we show Love to those most in need. And in showing that Love, we bring them Hope. Your past generosity gives me great confidence that Christ will once again bestow his grace on our community of Faith. And that your donation to the 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal, motivated by love, may continue to GIVE HOPE. Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia
