St. Thomas More School is a Child Safe School

Dear Parents,

Communication

Effective communication is essential to create strong school-home partnerships and to increase parental involvement. The Parish Education Board wishes to understand more about how the school can most effectively communicate with the parents and carers of our children.

Our key message is the belief that working together is in the best interests of the children’s education. In order to be accessible to as many parents as possible in the most effective manner, the school will use a variety of media to communicate the message.

Below is a link to a communications survey that should take about 3 minutes to complete. The survey will be open until Wednesday 26th June. If you would like a hard copy of the survey to complete, please call in to the office.

Dance Lessons Children have been participating in dance lessons for the past few weeks. The lessons run across 5 weeks with a performance on Friday afternoon 21st June in the gym, starting at 2pm. Parents are invited to attend and enjoy

their children’s many talents.

Government Data Collection

The Australian Education Regulation 2013 (the Regulation) requires the operators of all government and non-government schools that receive Australian Government funding to provide information to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training for the purposes of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD). The NCCD collects information about students with disability across Australia in a systematic way. It counts the number of school students with disability receiving educational adjustments to allow them to participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.

What is the purpose of the NCCD? The focus is to build an evidence base of students with disability and the level of educational adjustment being provided, and to inform policy development and future planning to better equip schools and education authorities/sectors to support students with disability.

An information sheet is attached with today’s newsletter.

Condolences Please remember the Kheissy family on the passing of Jackson and George’s grandfather. We also pray for the McCreesh family on the passing of Lauren’s grandfather.

May they rest in peace.

Thank you to all who were involved in Father Laurie’s farewell; it was certainly

a tribute to the man he is.

Working Bee

Thank you to those that were able to attend the Working Bee on the Saturday 25th March. We were able to achieve a lot on the day and we finished up before the bad weather set in as well. Some of the jobs we achieved included; Electrical maintenance (thanks to our qualified electrician), site clean up of building materials and rubbish, filled the skip, assisted the Parish with their rubbish removal, cleaned gutters, topped up the sandpit with new sand, built a new step/retaining wall at the edge of the oval, maintenance on the gym, gardening around the art room and mulch spread around the school. The day finished off with a lovely bbq lunch and a few drinks. A big thank you to our chefs on the day. It was great to see a lot of new families joining into help and I thank the following families for their assistance on the day; Vandermeer, Svalbe, Martino, McGloin, Messner, Rivero, Millard, DeNadai, Gwizdek, Curry, Dejong, Reynolds, Frankcombe. (If I have missed any families I apologise) It was a great group effort on the day and many hands made light work. Finally a big thank you to Edward Svalbe who man-aged his first Working Bee as the Parent Association Representative. Ed and I are looking forward to tackling some bigger projects in the second half of the year. The final two dates for the working bees are: Saturday 17th August - 9am Saturday 9th November - 9am

CROSS COUNTRY

It’s been a big month for Cross Country. Firstly STM’s Annual Cross Country event on May 8th with all students in year 3-6

par#cipa#ng. Well done to everyone and a big thankyou to all of our parent helpers on the day.

We can’t run these days successfully without our assistance.

Next it was District Cross Country where approximately 60 students that represented STM braved the elements to complete

their cross country run at Peninsula Grammar. All the students tried their best and did an awesome job of comple#ng the

2km or 3km course. There were some outstanding results with 7 students finishing in the top 10 for their age group.

They will go on to represent the District at the Division Cross Country on Wednesday 5th

June.

We wish them the very best of luck.

STM and Craft Markets Australia have a long standing agreement to provide volunteers to perform traffic management in the car park of the monthly Mornington Craft markets. The car park duty raises in excess of $16,000 per year for the school. These are funds we ask families to contribute not from their own pockets, but with a little time (each family approximately once every 14 months). There are 14 markets each year - (one each month plus two summer twilight markets). As you are aware, and agreed to at enrolment, it is the STM policy that all families must contribute on a rostered basis. The policy is that if you are unable to fulfil your rostered date it is your responsibility to find a replacement. However, it has become increasingly stressful and difficult to lock in and confirm the rosters for each market. We publish the rosters four months in advance yet often receive no response and late cancellations with no replacements.

Knowing that, we'd like to create a preference system and emergency bank. Please see below the times and dates of the upcoming markets. The duty hours are 7.45am - 12.30pm for the Sunday Markets and 1.45pm - 6.30pm for the Saturday Twilight Markets. We invite you to let us know your preferred market date and if you are available for the next upcoming market should you be required (of course if you are called on as an emergency, you will not be rostered for any future markets for at least the next 14 months). Any spots not taken up voluntarily will be rostered on by the car park supervisor four months in advance. There is an opportunity here to gather some of your school buddies together and plan the same date and make a day of it. Following the duty why not head in together for something to eat, some live music and enjoy the market?
