This weekend we take time to celebrate with Sr. Maureen as she marks her Golden Jubilee, fifty years of service as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

The Mission Statement of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet is contained in these words:

“We hold as our mission to continue the mission of Jesus, to share in the task of identifying and responding to spiritual and material needs. The expression of these needs varies with the time, culture, and conditions of persons.

In service to the dear neighbor, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, through their ministries, serve all persons without distinction to advance the mission.”

For those of us who know Sr. Maureen and have been touched by her ministry as our Pastoral Associate who oversees our Parish Bereavement Ministry and our Social Justice Outreach, we know that she truly embodies the Mission Statement of her Religious Order.

She identifies the spiritual and material needs of our Parish and she responds accordingly always in collaboration with me and all of the Parish Staff. She serves all people without distinction in order to advance the mission of our Parish.

She has created and overseen a Bereavement Ministry that is second to none, and as the Liaison to the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP) and the Interfaith Center for Worker Justice (ICWJ) she has sensitized a large number of our Parishioners to the issues of justice.

I know that I speak for all the Parish Staff and for all the Parishioners as I give thanks to God for Sr. Maureen’s presence and ministry among us.

She has been and continues to be a blessing to us all!

I am sure that we can join Sr. Maureen in this prayer:

“For all that has been: Thank You! For all that will be: Yes!”

† provide awareness and education of Catholic social justice teaching;

† participate in creating a society with more just laws and social structures;

† work with other faith groups on justice issues within social, economic, and political structures.

Social Justice Email “Hotline” Do you ever wonder where you fit in the social justice picture? How do you respond as a Christian when a social justice issue arises?

Social Ministries & Outreach Bringing the Celebration Home: Daily Activities for Lent Countdown—One of the best ways to keep your commitment for Lent is to write it down. This Lent, download our “Family Lenten Promise” cards, get your family together, and write out your Lenten Promise. Keep the cards on your refrigerator or table, and talk about how Lent is going over nightly dinner. Visit http://enterundermyroof.blogspot.com to download a copy.

Relationship Skills Workshop—Deacon Ralph and Peggy Skiano are presenting Relationship Skills Workshops every Tuesday night at 7:00pm at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, 3888 Paducah Drive, San Diego. Come and explore how to improve your relationships. You can attend one workshop, several, or all of them. The next workshop is April 1, and the topic is How to Fight Fair: Conflict Resolution. For more information call Deacon Ralph at 858-490-8292.

Bishops’ Letter on Marriage—Growing Together in Virtues: “There is another way to look at growth in marriage: namely, as growth in virtue. As a couple grows in virtue, they grow in holiness. In other words, the couple acquires, by prayer and discipline, those interior qualities that open them to God’s love and allow them to share in his love more deeply. Couples instinctively understand this when they speak about their marriage being a means of leading each other to heaven.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/.

Marriage Moments—Lent is a time of penance and purification but we needn’t walk around with sour faces. Do something foolish on April Fools Day this week. Healthy families laugh together. Do you and your honey have any running jokes? by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net.

Parenting Pointers—Parenting does not only involve caring for the younger generation but for many it also calls us to care for our own aging parents. Is it time for a call, a visit, to forgive a past hurt, watch a TV show or movie together. Take a child along. by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net.

Memorials are a way of honoring those whom we love, whether they are living or deceased. Often, memorials are made for a special intention or in thanksgiving for a variety of blessings received from God.

Our Parish Campus will be a living memorial. All who help in building it will leave something to the community itself that will be used by generations to come. The good they do is not interred with them, but will remain to share in the divine activity of God here on earth.

Listed below are items still available for adoption.

All contributions will be recognized in a special memorial to be displayed in our Parish Memorial Garden.

For more information or to adopt an item, contact Chris Smith 760-758-4100 x120 or [email protected]

We know there are forty days in Lent. Yes we do!

So how does one answer the precocious sixth grader who has counted up the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter and tells you that there are actually 46 days?

Uh-oh…

The Jesuits at Loyola Press suggest this solution:

Because each Sunday of the year, however, is a grand celebration and commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus, we don’t count them in the 40 days of penance. There are six Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. So, by subtraction, we are left with 40 days.

—Knowing Our Catholic Faith Beliefs and Traditions Worktext

Great! But then our precocious middleschooler counters that Lent ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, at least according to the Lenten Regulations found in the Lenten mailer. So, if we remove the Triduum as well as the Sundays, we are down to 37 days.

Uh-oh…

Perhaps a literal interpretation is not the key to unlocking this puzzle.

The number forty has many Biblical references: the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai with God (Ex 24:18); the forty days and nights Elijah spent walking to Mount Horeb (1 Kgs 19:8); the forty days and nights God sent rain in the great flood of Noah (Gen 7:4); the forty years the Hebrew people wandered in the desert while traveling to the Promised Land (Nm 14:33); the forty days Jonah gave in his prophecy of judgment to the city of Nineveh in which to repent or be destroyed (Jon 3:4).

Jesus retreated into the wilderness, where he fasted for forty days, and was tempted by the devil (Mt 4:1-2, Mk 1:12-13, Lk 4:1-2).

The Bible references forty of something when it is of special significance, regardless of the actual days, or years, that were spent.

The forty days of Lent mark a season of fasting, penance, and almsgiving. That they are “counted” as forty days tells us that they are significant, of great importance to the life of the Church.

And to us. —Douglas

Children’s Faith Formation RE.A.CH... Our Levels 1-5 Kids Raise the Roof as They Give Glory to God! At RE.A.CH we love to close our sessions with plenty of song and dance! It is a great way for us to let God know how much we love him and thank him for sending us his Son! EDGE… Teaching the Mass to Our Teens

Fr. Mike recently spent the evening with our EDGE middle school group teaching them about the parts of the Mass and where our Mass traditions come from. He was able to answer questions like, “Why does the priest wash his hands before the consecration?” or “Why do we use unleavened bread and real wine?” Best of all we got to celebrate Mass with all of our friends!

Adult Faith Formation The Bible Study program will be offering Little Rock’s Scripture and the Rosary for five sessions beginning Wednesday, April 9, at 9:00am or Thursday, April 10, at 7:00pm. Come learn about the sacred and inseparable link between Scripture and the Rosary. To sign up or for more information contact Pauline Lapre at [email protected].

Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving are the three pillars of Spirituality. Pope Francis tells us, “We should all remember that throwing away food is like stealing from the tables of the poor.” Through Operation Rice Bowl you are helping people around the world AND in your own community. We will be collecting Rice Bowl donations on RE.A.CH Sunday, April 27. Help us make a difference!

Come Join Fr. Karl as He Takes Us on a Virtual Tour of the Holy Land!

Tuesday mornings (April 1 and April 15) 9:15-10:30am on the lower level following morning Mass. It’s a vacation you will not want to miss!

A WAY TO GIVE ~ A WAY TO RECEIVE

DESIGNATED BANK ACCOUNTS, WILLS, LIVING TRUSTS, STOCKS, LIFE INSURANCE,

MUTUAL FUNDS, REAL ESTATE, ENDOWMENTS

Planned Giving is a generic term that covers many ways an individual can give to a charity while, in many cases receiving tax benefits. Examples of Planned Giving are: Wills, Living Trusts, Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Retirement Accounts, Stocks, Mutual Funds, Life Insurance, Endowments, and Real Estate.

This program is one way of helping the Parish raise the resources necessary to continue our campus buildout and also help plan for our future needs (i.e., Tower of Faith participants). Gifts of this nature are beneficial and much appreciated by St. Thomas More.

For more information please contact: Chris Smith at 760-758-4100 x120 or [email protected].

Mortgage/Building Completion . . . “a time to build” includes our faith journey as well

as the buildout of our Parish Campus.

Christian Stewardship and Everyday Saints

“Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness

and righteousness and truth.

Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.” —Ephesians 5:8-10

In the second reading today we are called to be Everyday Saints. St. Paul is alerting all of us to be aware of the grace given to us by Jesus. Each of us has gifts to manage during our lifetime.

“You have a gift. You have a talent. Find your gift. Find your talent. And use it. You can make life better in this world just by letting your light shine and by doing your part.”

— St. Thea Bowman

Lent is a great time to reflect on the diversity of all the saints. So many of their lives were transformed as they recognized what God’s purpose was in their lives. St. Francis of Assisi, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joan of Arc, our patron, St. Thomas More, Blessed Mother Teresa, and so many more, had a wide variety of gifts—and they used them to make this world better in their time and place.

While we might not all have highly specialized skills, we all have skills. Listing them might surprise us. While many seem simple and ordinary, it takes many skills to just get through a day!

We can all take a page from Pope Francis, both as Pope and also during all the years before he became Pope. How refreshing it is to see the witness he is giving to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As we continue our Lenten journey, consider these things:

Prayer ~ thank God for your blessings (list them daily).

Smile at people you see as you go about your day.

Perform random acts of kindness that only you know about.

Pray for people you don’t know.

Pray for people you know.

Pray for wisdom and mercy in all of our lives.

In trying situations consider, “What would Jesus do?”

Give of your skills, time, and treasure where you see a need.

We are blessed to have John Nava creating a tapestry for our permanent Church to honor St. Thomas More. This is the same artist who did the tapestries of everyday saints in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. These are magnificent tapestries mixing so many of our canonized saints along with everyday saints who walk with us on our journey. This is one of my favorite pieces of art ever because it reminds me of so many of you, our own everyday saints!

Our parish has a tradition on Holy Thursday to have dinners in Parishioners’ homes after the liturgy. Loaves of bread and bottles of wine are blessed at Mass for consumption at these dinners. We need “Hosts” who provide the setup and main dish in their home, and “Guests” who will be assigned to those homes and bring a dish to share. Host families determine the number of Guests they can accommodate and if their home is suitable for children. This is a random assignment of Guests to Host homes, meant as a way to meet new fellow Parishioners as well as extend the blessings and meaning of this holy night.

If you would like to organize your own gathering with friends on this day, please feel free to let us know the numbers of guests participating and we

will include you in our numbers and offer you blessed bread and wine to take home after Mass.
