GOSPEL MEDITATION

"This is how it is with the Kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that built up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces His followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, He wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person's life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone's story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry or for a person who just ate a feast. You could spend time with a lonely person or with someone who has more friends than you. You could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help, or you can join a ministry where you will constantly struggle to figure out what to do. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts. But not all of these actions will bear good fruit. If a sower sows seeds only on rocky or weed-infested soil, nothing of great value will grow. But if that same sower plants his seeds in rich soil, then the harvest will one day be great. In all of the soils, the seed is being sown, but it is not the act of sowing that is the most important factor. In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God's will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, then the greater the impact for God's glory. God wants all of you, but not in a way that is without understanding and discernment. He wants you to shine as a light to the world through your stewardship just as He came to you as the Light of the World in Baptism. You can't shine brightly if the match does not hit the wick. . ..............…Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS.

PERSEVERANCE IN OUR JOURNEY OF FAITH.

One of the essential qualities we need as we travel on this journey of faith towards ‘the Finish Line’, is perseverance. Over a month ago, we may have experienced and received a new Pentecost. To grow and persevere in the life of the Spirit, we must undergird our perseverance with self-control. Perseverance is not a mysterious quality that suddenly materializes one day! It results from virtue, discernment and self-control.

We attain perseverance not only through self control but also through afflictions suffered for love of Jesus [Romans 5:3]. In other words, as we read in James

1:2, we should “count it all joy,” when we are “involved in every sort of trial.” Christ says that we should “watch and pray so we do not fall into temptation” [Mt 26:41]. Ultimately, we accept the graces which lead to perseverance because of our love for God.

In 1Cor 13:7, Paul said, “love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” He went on to say in verse 13, “There are in the end, three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these, is love.” Without perseverance, our lives are tragic and even the death of Jesus is in vain for us {see 1Cor 1:17}. If we run the race of the Christian life like we are told in 2Tim

4:7 but fail to cross the finish line, we have run the race in vain. We need to pray daily for the grace of final perseverance. This brings to mind the story of John Akwhari, the marathon runner from Tanzania who finished last in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City after he fell and badly injured himself, just less than one lap left to the finishing line. In pain he ran to the end long after the last person had crossed the line; amidst loud cheering from the crowd. Asked why he had to continue in that pain, he said, “My country sent me to Mexico City not just to start the race, but to finish.” That’s it! Let us profess with Paul, “I put no value in my life if I can finish my race and complete the service to which I have been assigned by the Lord Jesus, bearing witness to the Gospel of God’s grace” [Acts 20:24]. Prayer meeting is every Saturday at 6:30 pm in Aquinas Center room C and Bible Study every 4th Saturday of the month same place and same time. Please come join us and you will be richly blessed.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: If God knows everything we do, why do we need to go to Confession?

Answer: Another term for the Sacrament of Confession is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We go to this sacrament not only to confess our sins, but to be reconciled with God. Of course, this begs the question, "If I can pray to God on my own, why can't I be reconciled to God on my own?" In the seven sacraments, we recognize the importance of community. Sacraments like Baptism or Matrimony happen in the context of the wider Church to remind us of the communal impact of our lives. We are not alone in our walk of faith! We don't need to confess our sins in front of the whole community -- thank God! But going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a tangible reminder that our sins affect not only ourselves and our relationship with God, but others as well. Jesus gave His Apostles authority to forgive sins in His name. Through this sacrament, we are really, truly forgiven by God Himself. We receive an outpouring of grace and strength to sin no more and our relationship with Christ and His Body, the Church, are restored.
