Baptism of the lord ~ January 12, 2020 Dear Parishioners: Well, I guess this week I do have something to write about! I was at the Women’s Retreat at the Tree of Life Retreat Center in Green-bush last Saturday – located on the Scenic Kettle Moraine Drive. What a place! Has to be one of the best kept secrets in western Sheboygan County. Rustic. Roomy. Comfortable. Good catch, Paige Katzfey!!! “Anywho” (as Paige likes to put it), I was invited out to hear Confessions for anyone who wished to avail herself of the Sacrament. Paige had told me 12:30 to 1:30 or so. So, I arrived around 12:20 and found my way in . . . It was lunchtime. Every seat at the tables and/or counters seemed to be taken, and the women were engaged in really lively conversations. It sure seemed to me that whatever had gone on during the retreat’s first couple of hours – it was only scheduled to go from 10 to 3 – must have hit a responsive chord! Not wishing to interrupt a good thing, I went to the area that had been set aside for the celebration of the Sacrament of Rec-onciliation. Two walls of full ceiling-to-floor windows, looking out on a half-frozen retention pond set amid some of the most beautiful wintry scenery you could imagine! I was kind of hoping none of the women would come for Confession so that, selfishly, I could enjoy the vista for an hour or so. But some came. And our seats were arranged in such a way that we were both looking out over the woodscape. What a way to celebrate the Lord’s mercy and goodness and love! Well, those who chose to come came by 1:20 or so, so at 1:30 packed up and moved back toward the door through which I’d entered. The Retreatants were engaged in a reflective exercise so I left as unobtrusively and quietly as I could. I made it through the porch gate, down the steps, and onto the small (and packed) parking lot. I had just about made it to my car when I hit a patch of black ice. And down – well, up first, then down – I went. A couple of ladies from the retreat were walking around outside and rushed to my aid. I felt around; it didn’t seem as though anything was broken. They helped me to my feet and walked me back inside, where we checked things out a little more carefully. I could hobble . . . maybe it was just a bad sprain. So, I got into my car and proceeded to Elkhart Lake, picked up a cane and drove to SJB for the 4:00 p.m. Mass. I arrived a little before 3:00 and tried making my way around – around the altar, up/down the aisle, up/down the steps at the altar. It wasn’t going to work. So, Scott Dedlow arranged for Fr. Tom Lijewski to do the Saturday Masses and Fr. Dennis Van Beek to do Sunday Mass-es for me while Michael and Josette Svitter took me to Urgent Care in Plymouth, where I learned that I’d fractured the fibula (the smaller of the two bones in one’s lower leg) in my left leg. I’m on crutches and wearing a temporary cast and can put no weight on that leg until further notice. I’ll be seeing an orthopedic surgeon in a couple of days. And honestly? I was a much better patient on crutches in 1970 (ACL), 1972 (booby trap in Vietnam) and 1998 (reconstructive leg surgery) than I am today. Please pray for me and my “disposition.” I will keep you informed as the saga unfolds.

Fr. Phil

Thank you letter from Safe Harbor for Advent Giving: Dear St. Thomas Aquinas Parish,

Your donation has helped a survivor in so many ways… From all of us at Safe Harbor, I would like to personally thank you for making our work possible. Your kindness supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in our community in so many different ways.

Your generosity allows us to look beyond the challenges and barriers to services for victims. Your gift inspires us to work hard to restore a sense of hope for the victims and survivors we serve. We are deeply humbled and privileged to be working to empower everyone to seek out

and live a life free of violence in Sheboygan County. Everyday we work with survivors that face countless challeng-es, and with your help, we are making our community a safer place for all.

Our current and future success of providing trauma-informed services is supported by the continued generosity of our community. Thank you so much for thinking about us and this community. We could not do this without your support. We are so glad that you are with us in this. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or want to get more involved. Together we are making our community a better place.

Thank you, Ryan Sorenson, Community Engagement Coordinator
