On his way to Jerusalem, to the cross, Jesus and his disciples had recently passed through Sa-maria and found no welcome there, due to animosity between the two peoples. Jesus’ disciples wanted vengeance. So Jesus tells

the story of how two strict adherents to the Law ignored the man who needed help, probably be-cause of a slavish interpretation of the Law. A stranger from Samaria, who was seemingly little more than a heathen, treated the man with kind-ness and compassion. (Hey, disciples, did you hear that?) Moses tried to tell the Israelites that the Law was already in their hearts. Jesus wanted the lawyer and the disciples—and us—to realize that the heart of the Law is a matter of our own hearts. That is where we know our neighbor—everyone.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. Thomas is preparing food for the “Table” at the Pres-byterian Church every third Thursday of each month. We hope you will use the sign-up sheet so we know what food you bring and who the volunteer helpers will be on that Thursday. We need potatoes, carrots, ham, green beans, and milk. The sign-up sheet for the food is on the “Table” board and a half barrel marked “Table” underneath where you can put food the Sunday before. This is on the NW corner of the Social Hall.

THE TABLE

We will resume the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, Au-gust 2nd, from 9am to 9pm. Mass will be celebrated at 12pm. Please

come and join us for Adoration on this First Fri-day. We invite you to sign up for an hour of ado-ration during the 12 hours. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come.

As many of you know, our parish is in great need of updating or fixing many items. We are currently working on the improving and fixing the lighting in the sanctuary area and the rest of the church. Our church and rectory need a new roof to fix the many leaks. We are in the process of trying to meet those demands. A parishioner donated some funds to have the inside of the church painted. Once we fix the roof, we will begin the painting inside the hall and church. A parishioner also donat-ed some items to help improve our sound system and another parishioner donated the processional cross. I mention this to thank you for the second collection that we have for the repair and mainte-nance fund. Please know that the second collection for the repair and maintenance is so critical for our parish. Our needs are great, but with your help and support, we are doing the best to meet the demands of our parish. May God continue to bless our parish of St. Thomas, Fr. Abel

Gospel: Lk 10:25-37 There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?" He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." He replied to him, "You have an-swered correctly; do this and you will live." But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus re-plied, "A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.' Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?" He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."
