St. Thomas Aquinas Church Page 3 Saginaw, Michigan
Third Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 5:27-32, 40-41 The Acts of the Apostles tells the story of the early Church during the first 30 years after the resurrection of Jesus. It describes God’s Spirit at work, directing encouraging and supporting the members of the Church. Second Reading: Revelation 5:11-14 The book of Revelation was written around 95 A.D. for Christians living in what is today Turkey. The Roman emperor ordered his subjects to worship him as a god. When the Christian resisted, they were persecuted. The book of Revelation was written to encourage them. Today’s passage described a vision of God’s people enjoying heavenly life and singing God’s praises for their story.
Father Rick’s Reflections . . . Today, we listen to the epilogue for the gospel of John, the chapter that follows the conclusion. Scholars believe because the style and vocabulary is so different, this section was written by a different author to address the realities that had emerged in the decades following the initial
composition of the gospel. Our section incorporates two stories – one of the appearance on the seashore, followed by another of the rehabilitation of Peter. We hear of the “Beloved Disciple”, a nameless disciple who is the first to recognize Jesus with the proclamation “It is the Lord!” The Beloved Disciple is portrayed as the true model of discipleship. The stage is set with a charcoal fire (remember where Peter denied Jesus) and his threefold rehabilitation. Three times Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?” and three times Peter respond affirmatively. Though Peter denied Jesus, the epilogue tells the story of Peter’s rehabilitation. Peter was effectively forgiven and placed in a leadership role. No Christian community is an island unto itself. Even leaders can stumble; when they do, they can be forgiven by Jesus himself. Such is the power of the risen Christ. We may think that the saints and disciples had it all figured out. But our gospel reminds us that even, now, a time after the resurrection, the disciples are fishing. They were not about the business of preaching and teaching. Instead, they had gone back to what they were doing before they met Jesus. Even Peter, after Jesus asked him three times, became a bit agitated. It reminds us of the hope and promise of rehabilitation when we fall short. Saints and disciples were real human beings with faults and shortcomings. Jesus did not choose perfect human beings. Rather, he chose disciples who would follow him. He chose us. We are called to follow. When we fall short, Jesus will be there for us also.
For our annual CSA appeal, our target this year is $129,889, an increase of 15% over last year. As we move forward, I want to encourage 100% participation in our CSA. As of last Monday, we had heard from 34% of our parishioners. We still have a long way to go. Even if you cannot contribute this year, please complete your pledge card and put $0 on it. You have participated. If you have any questions, please talk with me. I want to thank everyone for their generosity to the CSA. By participating together, we help build the Church in our area. Letters will be going out in the next week or so to those we have not heard from.
Today, we congratulate our young people who come to the table of the Lord for the first time to receive Eucharist. These young people were confirmed last Thursday evening and now complete their initiation into our faith with receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus. For many years, the experience of the sacrament of Confirmation was “the end of our formal education in our faith.” It became a “sacrament of graduation” and not a “sacrament of initiation.” If we are honest with ourselves, we never stop learning about faith and our religion. We spend the rest of our lives discovering where God works in our lives. The gift of the Spirit in Confirmation helps us recognize God’s presence in our lives.
Believe it or not, May has begun. This week, we have our yearly combined Finance & Pastoral Councils meeting to go over the budget for next fiscal year. This is the only meeting that we like to have closed so that we can openly discuss about future expenses and projects. When I print the finance report, I will include the approved budget so you know where we are investing the gifts you offer.
After a very busy week, I hope this one is quieter. Next weekend is our “Nomination Weekend” to seek people to serve on Pastoral Council and Finance Council. Give it some thought and prayer to see if God maybe calling you to serve. People need to be active, participating Catholics and members our St Thomas Aquinas Parish. Employees or their families are unable to serve. Also, we will be remembering our mothers on Sunday. Have a blessed week. Will spring ever get here?

WHAT IS THE "ST THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH’S MONTHLY MEMORIAL AND INTENTIONS"?
The ST THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH Monthly Memorial and Intentions is a special offering made by parishioners of ST THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH, through which your intentions are remembered at a special Mass to be celebrated each month throughout the entire year.
WHY START SUCH A MEMORIAL? This Monthly Memorial fulfills many of your requests for monthly
prayer for your special intentions or for those loved ones who are deceased; your intentions will be listed each week on the back of the parish bulletin. Your offering of $50.00 per year will help to support the parish.
WHAT IS THE REQUESTED OFFERING? A yearly offering of $50.00 is asked for the intentions to be
remembered at this Mass, to be celebrated each month. You are all welcome to attend this Mass.
HOW DO I LIST MY INTENTIONS? You may list your intentions one of two ways. As one individual
name: Mary Jones or you may list family groupings: The Jones Family. Multiple names may be listed but require an additional offering of $50.00 for each name listed.
WHEN WILL THESE MASSES BEGIN? As the memorial begins to form, and intentions are submitted, we
will begin the Masses in June of this year. The “intention year” will then be from June to June. And then we begin again. If you wish to continue having your intentions remembered at these Masses, you will be asked to renew your offering each year.
HOW DO I BECOME PART OF THE “ST THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH MONTHLY MEMORIAL AND INTENTIONS”?
Complete the form on the back side of this page and return it to the parish office as soon as possible, with your offering of $50.00.
WHAT IF I HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS? Feel free to call the parish office at (989) 799-2460, during business

Alive!
rebuilt The Story of a Catholic Parish
On Sunday, April 28, 2019 about 20 people attended the last session on the book “rebuilt”. When Fr. Rick Bokinskie asked, “Does the pastor have to do all things?” The response was NO!!! He replied, “Thank you”. He then shared a story of what some people think a pastor is suppose to do. A comment from the people in attendance was “when does he sleep?”
Fr. Rick Bokinskie asked, “What are the mission activities of the Parish?” He then went over the Time and Talent Survey with us. There are many items that people can choose from. He shared that a parish is divided into three groups of people: The first group is 30% of the people who are “engaged”. They are the parishioners who are active and do all the work. The second group is called “disenchanted” are also 30 % of the parish. They are members of the parish who have no interest in volunteering. The last group is called the “disenfranchised”. They make up 40% of the parishioners. They want to get involved yet do not know how to go about getting started.
When Fr. Rick Bokinskie asked, “How do we empower all parishioners to be ministers to others?” The responses were: ask someone to do one small item, have small groups, invitation, when someone has deepen their relationship with Christ they become more involved. He did say that he would look into the Alpha Program.
The Kingdom of God – destination or movement to the destination? When this question was asked Fr. Rick Bokinskie shared that the Kingdom of God came to earth at the first Christmas. When Jesus was born He brought it to earth and we are living it now. It is a journey was another reply.
When Fr. Rick Bokinskie asked, “Does the parish staff love the parish and its people?” The answer was a very strong YES!!!
He went on to ask, “How do we get the parishioners “out of the pews” and into ministering to the community?” The replies included: maybe the buddy system with school children from STA to act as Greeters and from the pulpit invitation.
When Fr. Rick Bokinskie asked, “Where do we go from here?” The replies included: we need more adult and youth education, we used to have video’s to borrow in the lobby. They encouraged family time. Fr. Rick Bokinskie stated that he would look into the Formed.org education website. He shared that this information will be taken to Pastoral Council in September and we will start forming a plan of action.
A question was raised. What did we get out of this book after having read it? Responses included: reason I am motivate to go to Mass is to Worship God, I go to church to get something out of it. But I don’t get anything out if I first don’t put something into it, reflect on my faith, I learned that as a Disciple I have a job and the importance of doing my job, a man opened the outside door for me before Mass and I appreciated him standing outside to do that. A few other replies were: we had good family discussions about the book and our faith, getting involved helped me to meet people, my primary work is to come and Worship the Lord, I get blessed when I serve at Mass. When I visit our homebound/nursing home parishioners I think I get more out of it. Fr. Rick Bokinskie shared this saying: My parish will be greater if I do…
Everyone was invited to attend the Pastoral Council come this September.
Thank you to all that attended all four sessions or just a few. I truly appreciate your time
and support to STA!
