A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Page 3

Dear Friends,

It’s been a while since I wrote to you! I thank Fr. Matt for his three excellent reflections on his journey to the Holy Land. I just recently returned from my yearly retreat. I’ll write about my experiences there soon, but there are a number of items I’d like to catch you up on.

I have good news to share with you. Fr. Michael Wanda will be returning to St. Theresa for one more year! Fr. Michael has been a most welcome addition to our St. Theresa family. He will continue to do what he has been doing to help out the parish as he prepares for his next pastoral assignment in a year. This is certainly good news for us! As we’ve experienced this year, Fr. Michael is a wonderful homilist and has been very helpful in ministering the sacraments and other priestly functions that he assists with. He has also been a lot of fun to live with. Please feel free to offer Fr. Michael your congratulations next time you see him!

It’s hard to believe, but the one year anniversary of Fr. Ron Lewinski’s passing away will be next Thursday, July 19th. We will remember that sad day and celebrate his new life with the Lord with a Mass on the 19th at 7:00 pm in the church. All are invited to participate. Fr. Matt and I recently concelebrated a Mass at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Mundelein, where Fr. Ron was pastor for many years prior to his arrival at St. Theresa. After that Mass, Bishop Rassas blessed a memorial to Fr. Ron in the cemetery adjacent to the church. As the new church there was being constructed many years ago, Fr. Ron would sit on a bench across from the construction site in the cemetery and observe the progress. The new memorial formalizes that action and is quite lovely. I encourage you to go and see it someday. It’s a great way to remind ourselves of all that Fr. Ron did in his priestly ministry.

Our tabernacle is going to be away from the church for a month and a half while it is being refinished off site. This work is being done thanks to your generosity in the fund-a-need portion of our most recent Green & Gold Gala. In addition, a new set of priest and deacon vestments that reflect the colors of our major liturgical seasons are on order, again, thanks to your generosity through Green & Gold. We can all look forward to our newly re-furbished tabernacle and new Mass vestments in the coming weeks!

Progress continues to be made on the Pauline Center second floor renovation project, which is where the majority of our staff offices are located. A few weeks ago, the entire second floor was vacated so that the old carpeting could be removed. After that, asbestos abatement was done when the old tile floor underneath the carpeting was also removed. Now that this work has been completed, the floors were cleaned and the next part of the project will be the repainting of all the walls and ceilings on the second floor as well as the stairways. When that is concluded, new carpeting and baseboards will be installed and everything will be moved back upstairs, which will finish the project, hopefully by the second week in August. Until then, the parish staff will be re-located to different spaces and the Pauline Center will remain closed. The best way during this time to contact staff will be via email. Please be patient, as our normal quick turnaround on replying to your requests and questions will take a little while longer than usual. We look forward to returning to our newly renovated space, which will serve our needs for many more years to come!

In addition, work will commence next week (weather permitting) on re-surfacing the remainder of the parking lot that has not been done in recent years. This includes all of the parking lot from the drive by the statue of St. Theresa through the back of the rectory, day chapel, gathering space, Pauline Center and school. Again, if the weather cooperates, the re-surfacing should take less than two weeks to accomplish, but it may impact our weekend Masses. Please be attentive to what is going on during this project and be patient with whatever inconveniences it may present.

Finally, I had a conversation recently with a Palatine Police Officer who discussed our parking lot situation, particularly on Benton Street, and the many violators of fire lane and handicapped accessibility restrictions in regards to where cars are parked at the weekend Masses. I was informed that the fire lane in front of the church is not allowed to have cars parked on it, because it isn’t wide enough for a fire truck to gain access if needed when cars are parked there. Because it isn’t marked, he did not issue tickets. However, when the parking lot is refinished I will have the curbs on both sides of the fire lane painted yellow to mark it as a “no parking zone.” I know many people have probably parked there for years, but in the future, you will not be able to do so. Please try to understand the fire safety reasons for this and recognize that we are the envy of the majority of parishes in our Archdiocese because of the ample size of our parking lots, so there are certainly alternatives to parking in the fire lanes.

Enjoy this lovely summer weather and may God bless you all!

How to Pray Lectio Divina

The following is taken from “How to Pray Lectio Divina? Pope Francis Will Teach You, Step by Step” (Catholic Link, written by Silvana Ramos)

“’Lectio Divina’ means divine reading in Latin. It’s an ancient practice that teaches us how to read, meditate on and live the Word of God. History tells us that it was the Blessed Guigo the Carthusian, who wrote the ‘most important stages’ of this way of meditating the word. It’s not a prayer with fixed rules, but it does have important phases which will guide us towards an encounter with a personal message from God to us, through the Sacred Scriptures.

These phases are four: the lectio or reading of God’s word; the meditatio, or meditation on that which we have read; the oratio, or prayer which is when we enter in dialogue with God; and finally the contemplatio, or contemplation stage in which we abandon ourselves to holy thoughts. This is when we leave behind our own thoughts and get ready to listen to God’s voice, who speaks within us.

‘Reading seeks, meditation finds, prayer asks, contemplation feels. Reading puts as it were whole food into your mouth; meditation chews it and breaks it down; prayer finds its savour; contemplation is the sweetness that so delights and strengthens. Reading is like the bark, the shell; meditation like the pith, the nut; prayer is in the desiring asking; and contemplation is in the delight of the great sweetness’ (Blessed Guigo The Carthusian – Fragment about contemplative life).

Here is a brief guide to the steps of praying Lectio Divina: 1. Preparation ahead of time. Finding the Scripture reading. 2. Sign of the Cross 3. Initial Prayer— Example: ‘My Lord, in your presence I want to prepare my heart

for this moment of prayer. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten me and open my mind and heart to everything You want to tell me today. Thank you Lord, for nourishing me with your Word.’

4. Scripture Reading 5. Brief Reading—Re-read the commentary or reflection found in preparation. This

brief reading’s aim is to help you go deeper into the scripture’s sense and to predispose yourself to listen to God’s voice.

6. Brief personal meditation—This is when interior silence is made and the meditation properly starts. The idea is to reflect on what the Gospel has to do with your life, and to welcome it into your heart. Here we propose some questions which could help you during this phase, but they are merely suggestions:

What does the Gospel I just read tell me? How does it enlighten my life? What traits of Jesus do I find in it? What particular message does God want to deliver to me?

7. Thanksgiving and personal petitions 8. Final prayer and consecration to Mary 9. Sign of the Cross”

This location is minutes away from the abortion facility in Wood Dale. Whether or not you've ever considered praying at an abortion clinic, THIS TRAINING IS FOR YOU. Teens and college students encouraged to attend. Everyone with a heart for the unborn and their mothers!

Every pro-lifer needs these tools to promote and defend God's greatest gift of LIFE! Register at www.NorthWestFamiliesForLife.weebly.com, email [email protected], or call Laura Vandercar 847-651-4877. Free-will donation accepted at the door to help cover the costs. Everyone who comes will receive a "Life Witness" handbook.
