NoticeBoard With so many computer applications out there, and data available at the touch of a screen, you may not realise all of the potential dangers facing your children on social media. Children nowadays have their whole lives documented online, even from before they are born. The ramifications of this can be far-reaching, which is why it's good to educate yourself and set guidelines for your family. Here are five dangers of social media you'll want to talk about with your children: 1. “Stranger danger” – Take it seriously Children may find it hard to judge strangers they meet in person, and it’s even harder to tell friends from foes online. Parents must keep up- to-date with the apps their kids are using and what it is that these apps do. Stress to your children that they should not interact with strangers on these apps, and explain that many people on social media are not who they say they are. You should also monitor your childrens Internet usage to ensure their interactions are only with real-life friends. 2. (Over) sharing information Don’t reveal too much Children should be aware of how much they are revealing about themselves online. It is important that your children do not share their location or use apps that let people track their movements. Discuss the dangers of revealing too much information on social media, explaining that it gives ammunition to strangers with bad intentions. Also, avoid bypassing age restrictions for children, and adhere to the terms of service for social media applications. For example, Facebook does not allow anyone under the age of 13 to create an account. 3. Hidden info in photos Beware of posting pics Children should know the potential risks of what they're posting online. Photographs are no exception. It is important that children don't send photographs unless they're 100 percent sure it is a friend they're communicating with. Photos contain EXIF data -- information about the camera you took the photo with which means the receiver can trace where the photo was taken. With young children, it's better to restrict the use of photos on social media or make use of the parental controls many applications possess. Parents of primary and secondary school age children should discuss the fact that photographs contain location information, which could potentially help a stranger find them. 4. The staying power of social media - Consider the future Children need to fully grasp that what is posted on social media can have long-term consequences. What may seem like a funny joke at the time could potentially be accessed later by colleges and employers. 5. Cyberbullying Ask, “will others get hurt?” Try writing a list of rules about social media usage, discussing them with your children and posting them near the computer. This checklist should include these questions: "Is this going to hurt someone's feelings? How would I feel if this message came to me? Does this feel threatening in any way?" Talk to your children about bullying and enforce the idea of not joining friends who are gossiping about or teasing others online. If you have a babysitter or childminder make sure they know what online and social media rules your children should be following. Text source: Lauren B. As we enter the third week after Pentecost we reflect: Beckoning God, as you moved in the lives of Elijah and Elisha, move in our lives, inviting us to journey to unknown territory, to listen for your voice, and to speak your prophetic word in a world that does not want to hear. Empowered by your Spirit, grant us the courage we need to journey, trust, listen, speak and accept your commission to be your faithful servant people. Farewell

It is never easy to say farewell to the members of staff who leave St Teresa’s. Mrs Catherine Gascoigne joined St Teresa’s High School as the Geography Teacher in January 2018. She is a kind and patient teacher and will be missed by her colleagues and the girls for her friendliness, her efficiency and her sense of humour. We wish Catherine and her family all the very best as they prepare for a new chapter in their lives in Australia.

Grade 00 & 0 Sports Day

The Grade 00 & 0s had their Sports Day on Friday 21 June during school. There was much fun and excitement as the girls tackled the various obstacle courses that included locomotion, ball skills and balancing. Cheered on by their family and the Grade 3s, all the girls performed to the best of their ability. Well done Grade 00 and 0s!

Reflecting on the Past Week

Well done to all the girls who played sport over the past fortnight. There has been Hockey at Wanderers and Social Netball and Ball Activities at School. Lots of fun has been had by everyone present. Thank you to all the parents who have supported the provision of opportunities for your girls to be actively involved in a sport at School. We trust that girls will continue to be active over the Mid-term Break. There are Hockey Matches and Festivals very soon after we return, to which we are looking forward. We will play matches with St Katharine’s on Friday 12 July and the Grade 6 players will be involved in Festivals at Holy Rosary and St Mary’s on Saturday 13 July. The Team lists and letters will be posted before the Mid-term Break, although the Fixtures will only be available in the week we return to School.

Hockey

Hockey vs St Peter’s on Tuesday 25 June: Junior Team Lost 0 - 1 Senior Team Lost 1 - 2 These results do not do justice to two well-played matches! We are proud of the progress made by both Teams this season. Our players have stepped up beautifully and the standard of our play has reached new levels, which is very exciting.

Left: High School Hockey Captain, Limani Magaliso, with Coach, Isabella da Rocha, at the end of our final Fixture. Right: Junior HS Hockey Team saying farewell to Coach Caitlin Whytock. The will be Grade 7 Hockey Matches and Festivals directly after we return from Mid-term Break. We will play Matches

with St Katharine’s on Friday 12 July and will be involved in Festivals at Holy Rosary and St Mary’s on Saturday 13

July. The Team lists and letters will be posted before the Mid-term Break, although the Fixtures will only be available

in the week we return to School.

Netball

The U17 and First Netball Teams won their section of the C League. As a result, they qualified for the final D13 play-offs that took place at St Stithians on Wednesday 26 June. Both teams had to play against the Teams that ended second in the A League. A tough ask! The intensity of the Matches took some getting used to and then our girls were most definitely up to the task, giving both of our opposition schools, Beaulieu and Leeuwenhof, quite a fright. Although we lost both play-offs, our players did us proud and the standard of play augurs well for the future. Well done, coaches and girls!

We trust that the girls will continue to be active over the Mid-term Break. Please note that there are Netball practices

on Tuesday 8 July due to the friendly Matches we are playing with Roedean on Wednesday 10 July (please see the

Sports Programme on the App for details). There will be Sports Sessions for the High School girls throughout exams,

provided they are well supported. We trust that the girls will support us by participating in these opportunities as

there are sound, empirically supported reasons to keep active.
