REFLECTIONS FOR PALM SUNDAY
“Pilate addressed them a third time, ‘What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime.’” The Palm Sunday Gospel readings present a sad picture of grown-ups who succumb to peer pres-sure. Three times, Pilate proclaimed that Jesus was not guilty. But yet, he gave in to the mounting pres-sure from the crowd, whose “voices prevailed... and he handed Jesus over to them.”
Also, during the opening Gospel at the procession of palms, we see the adoring crowds hailing Jesus as “the king who comes in the name of the Lord,” but only too soon the chorus changes as the voice of the crowd cries out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” What hap-pened to Jesus’ loyal supporters? How did the mob mentality overtake them all? Then too, we have Pe-ter, who in comfortable company with Jesus and his friends promised eternal faithfulness. But when oth-ers began asking uncomfortable questions, he caved: “Woman, I do not know him.”
These three scenarios give us a chance to reflect on our own faithfulness as we journey into Holy Week. Like Pilate, do we know the truth but abandon it when it becomes unpopular? Public opinion these days declares much Church teaching to have fallen out of favor—will we renege like Pilate or stand fast to the faith? The fickle crowds demonstrate another kind of weakness, where instead of thinking for them-selves, people just followed those around them.
Are we guilty of this kind of passive intellectual la-ziness? How about Peter’s problem: do we change our story based on current company, or do we live as consistent Christian witnesses in the world? This week, may we have the courage to accompany Jesus all the way to the cross, no matter what anyone else may do. 2015 Liturgical Publications Inc. Resource Center
PASTOR’S CORNER
The Days of Holy Week In Western Christianity, each day of Holy Week has its own significance and particular celebrations. In general, be-lievers are encouraged to follow the biblical passages corre-sponding to the days the Week represents, beginning with Christ's entry into Jerusalem on a donkey (Palm Sunday), moving through the Last Supper (Maundy Thursday) and the Crucifixion (Good Friday) to the Resurrection of Easter. Attention to the Bible highlights the contrast between the sadness and suffering of the beginning of the week with the miraculous and joyous nature of its ending. That both sorts of emotions are important to the Week's observance is evi-denced in the Easter Triduum, the three days from Good Fri-day to Easter, which are considered by many denominations to be the holiest days of the year. Holy Week in Other Countries: Many countries have elabo-rate rituals and customs surrounding Holy Week, including Colombia, Peru, and Spain, in particular. In the Philippines (a predominantly Roman Catholic nation), where the ob-servance is known as Semana Santa, many of the Week's days have special observances. At Palm Sunday Mass, palaspas (palm leaves) are carried in procession to be blessed by a priest. After the service, the leaves are taken home, where they are placed above doorways and windows to ward off evils spirits. Holy Monday is marked by the Pasaba, a marathon chant of Jesus' life, passion, and death, which often lasts for days at a time. On Holy Thursday, the last Mass before Easter Sunday typically includes a reenactment of the Washing of the Feet of the Apostles, as well as a procession of the Blessed Sacra-ment before it is taken to the Altar of Repose. Good Friday sees street processions in which self-flagellation and crucifixion as acts of penance are not uncom-mon. Finally, on Easter morning, Salubong is practiced, a cer-emony in which large statues of Jesus and Mary are pro-cessed to a meeting, symbolizing the first meeting of Jesus and his mother after the Resurrection. For Christians the world over, Holy Week is a time heavy with the rituals of re-pentance and sadness for the death of Christ. It is also, how-ever, a preparation for the elation of the celebration of his Resurrection.

These years have been filled with grace, wonder, many beautiful surprises and many outstanding Spirit filled people. ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON YEAR OF MERCY: Reflection for Palm Sunday: “You know, there’s something about mercy that is very human. This ability to feel compassion and to act on it makes us who we are. And when we look toward the events of Holy Week, there’s no way we can stand apart from what is happening. It’s just not in us. The Passion of Jesus and the very injustice of what is happening grabs us somewhere in the gut. Non-Catholics are sometimes puzzled, when they see our churches fill up on Good Friday. But people not familiar with the way we do things miss the point that Jesus’s sto-ry looks like our story as well. There’s a point where our stories come together.” Listen to the rest of this reflection from Fr. Frank Wright at mercy.adw.org. 2016 ANNUAL JUBILARIAN MASS Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate the annual Jubilarian Mass honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 51+ years on Sunday, June 19 at 2pm at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Please call the parish office to register. Names of jubilarians need to be turned in to the parish office by Monday, April 11.
