I. Today is Catechetical Sunday: we are reminded of the promise parents make at Baptism to mold and form their children in the practice of the faith. This whole year we are challenged to focus on “Prayer: The Faith Prayed.” This theme invites all of us to devote ourselves to a deeper study and practice of prayer, for our own spiritual good and for the good of those we serve. Supporting parents in this es-sential role are our catechists; special thanks to: Brenda Pierce and Haley Mahoney (1st/2nd grade), Melissa Ashby and Laura Lewis (3rd/4th grade), Ross & Jill Leigh (5th/6th grade), Meghan Payne (7th/8th grade), and Katelyn West – Confirmation catechist along with Fr. Jamie.

II. Welcome Corey Bruns! From Quincy, Illinois by way of Marion, Kentucky, Corey achieved a BA in Philosophy/Catholic Studies over the last four years in In-dianapolis, Indiana at Simon Bruté Seminary on the campus of Marian University, under the auspices of the Franciscan Sisters of Oldenburg, Indiana. We are privi-leged to have Corey at the Cathedral for his “pastoral year” before he begins his theological studies. The entire parish has a hand in forming a future priest. Invite him to your home, to do lunch, to walk your dog, to attend your meetings, and to listen to your faith story! Let's give Corey a St. Stephen Cathedral welcome!

III. Parent/Child Reconciliation Meeting: is there anything more important than teaching our children the necessity of forgiveness through the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation and our own example. Parents, you model forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing to your children and your every day experiences in your home. Upcoming meeting is Monday, September 19th, at 6:30 in the Community Center.

IV. Celebrate your Marriage: Bishop William Medley will celebrate Mass and preach at our Cathedral on Sunday, September 18th at 2:00pm, followed by a re-ception. Everyone is invited. This celebration is sponsored by the Diocesan Family Life office. Thanks to our St. Stephen Diocesan Event Welcomers who will provide hospitality in our name to people from all over the Diocese!

SAVE THE DATE! Tri-Parish Mission

October 24, 25, & 26th St. Stephen will join with Blessed Mother and Sts. Joseph and Paul Parishes for three days of renewal. The Lord invites us to follow him as disciples. This mission is a time of listening and reflection for those who wish to be more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Father John Mark Ettensohn, OMI, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, will conduct our three-day Mission____________

We are less than 60 days until Election Day. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to emblazon His Gifts upon us to be active and make a faith-filled decision. Visit USCCB website for Faithful Citizenship.

“Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.” Benjamin Franklin

Although we may not immedi-ately perceive them, Scripture is filled with references to steward-ship. Today’s Gospel from St. Luke that includes the Parable of

the Dishonest Steward is more direct than many of those references. Retired Bishop Robert Morneau, who was instrumental in the development of the United States Bishops’ pastoral letter, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, is fond of saying that on Judgment Day, the Lord will only ask us one question, “What have you done with the garden I have given you?” In other words, we are all gifted, per-haps in different ways, but whatever gifts we receive might be considered our garden from God. We must ac-count for those gifts. The whole concept of stewardship is clear in today’s parable. The steward is the manager (not the owner) of the master’s gifts. God is, of course, the manager, and we are the stewards who are charged with the responsibility of overseeing our gifts of time, talent, treasure, and per-haps even influence. Do we use those gifts wisely and with justice? That is the point we must get from this Gospel. Our Holy Father Pope Francis understood the significance of being a steward when he recently said, “In the end, eve-rything has been entrusted to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God’s gifts.” Copyright © 2016 CatholicSteward.com

Ministry Highlights

St. Vincent de Paul: Do you have a heart for the less for-tunate? More volunteers are needed to staff the St. Vin-cent de Paul office (located in the Parish Office). Volun-teers meet with those in need on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to coordinate assistance for food, rent, and utility payments. Training is provided; volun-teers serve on a rotating basis. Vulnerable Adult Ministry (VAM) certification and background check are required.

Sacristans: Sacristans provide a vital service by working behind the scenes to prepare for Masses and other liturgi-cal functions. More sacristans are needed for all Masses. Training is provided; volunteers serve on a rotating basis.

Contact Donna at [email protected] or 270-683-6525 to volunteer or for more information.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS! Christian Initiation The first stage of the initiation process, RCIA, concludes with the Rite of Acceptance or Wel-come. The second stage of the initiation process, known as the Catechumenate, is the extended period of time when those to be initiated receive a more formal training in the Christian way of life. After being welcomed into the Catechumenate, the unbap-tized inquirers are now referred to as catechumens. The ritual and the title indicate a move from coming to inquire concerning the faith, to a change in lifestyle of beginning to live as Chris-tians, even though they are not yet fully initiated. The Catechumenate is often the lengthiest period of the RCIA. It can last from several months to several years, depend-ing upon the needs of the catechumen. It is a time of instruction in the faith, participation in community activities and commu-nal prayer or worship, and joining in the active work of the ap-ostolic life of the Church. All of us are called upon by the nature of our baptism to assist these members of our community in their journey of faith. Some of us are called to be catechists (to break open the Word of God) to them, others are needed to mentor and sponsor them, and all are called to reach out in hospitable welcome. Please consider not whether you are called to a role of service in the RCIA, but how you are being called to serve these newest mem-bers of our faith community! Each week we ask some active member of the parish to join us to share their involvement in the parish and provide a snack for our inquirers. If you are willing to do this, please call the office. If you know someone who has expressed interest in Catholi-cism, invite them to join you at our RCIA gatherings. RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parish Media Center. On Sept. 21st we will explore the topic “Catholic Social Teaching.” Come and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424.

Sacrament of Reconciliation Meeting A Parent/Child meeting for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be held on Monday, September 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center. All those in 2nd grade, Catholic Schools, Home Schools and Faith Formation classes, prepare to celebrate the sacrament together as a faith community of St. Stephen Ca-thedral. Contact Donna Murphy if you have any questions.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Mercy is one thing, malpractice quite anoth-er. Why, then, does the defrauded master in Jesus’ parable praise the devious steward? Jesus shows by example how to sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources, indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No matter how costly such service, or how minimal the return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a reward that is literally out of this world. For Amos and Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical charity toward our neigh-bor. Paul, too, declares that the only worship acceptable to God is offered by a community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to life, “lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument” (1 Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Year of Mercy chal-lenges us to live as “children of light,” as devoted to self-sacrificing service as “the children of this world” (Luke 16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God’s kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring treasures. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Catechetical Sunday, September18th This whole year we are challenged to focus on “Prayer: The Faith Prayed,” the theme of this year’s Catechetical Sunday, September 18, 2016. This theme invites all the bap-tized--especially catechists and Catholic school teachers--to devote themselves to a deeper study and practice of prayer, for their own spiritual good and for the good of those they serve.

Daily prayer shines the light of the Gospel on everything we do, so that all our thoughts, words and actions can be in-formed and measured by love of God and neighbor. Our Lord’s disciples frequently observed him interrupting his journeys in order to spend long hours alone in prayer to his heavenly Father. They were moved to ask him to teach them how to pray. May we be moved this year to do the same.

Have you (or has someone you know) re-cently had to adjust to any of these types of situations: a new job, a new baby, a new boss, a new house, a separation, an adult child moving back home, a seriously ill par-ent, a death, a best friend who has moved

or gotten a divorce? Changes in one’s life can be difficult, especially if they are unexpected. Stephen Ministers are trained to “walk” with you, to help you cope with these types of changes. YOUTH GROUP NEWS!

Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for September Universal Intention: That each may contribute to the com-mon good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center. Evangelization Intention: That by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on Scripture, Christinans may be come more aware of their mission to evangelize.

Monday, September 26th We Welcome Sister George Mary Hagan, OSU! Please join the Cathedral parish on Monday, September 26th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Vaughan Community Center, for an in-formative and historic presentation on the migration of the faithful Roman Catholics

into western Kentucky. After years of persecution by the Protestants in Maryland, they traveled through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Bardstown, KY. Bardstown became the Catholic Seat of all Catholic churches further west. This group of fervent Catholics finally settled in Western Kentucky near Whitesville. All are invited! Bring a friend!

The Glenmary Sisters Guild will be selling Pumpkins, Mums, Decorative Gourds, and Straw after Masses on September 24th and 25th.

Four Habits Worth Having— “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Sav-ior Jesus Christ.” 2Peter 3:18 Growth is the goal of the Christian. Maturity is mandatory. If a child ceased to develop, the parent would be concerned, right? When a Christian stops growing, help is needed. If you are the same Christian you were a few months ago, be careful. You might be wise to get a checkup. Not on your body, but on your heart. Not a physical, but a spiritual. May I suggest one? Why don’t you check your habits? Make these four habits regular activities and see what happens. FIRST, the habit of prayer. SECOND, the habit of study. THIRD, the habit of giving. And last of all, the habit of fellowship.

~In This Year of Mercy~ Give Generously to the

Disciples Response Fund

Support of the work of our Diocese is important. There are many things that even the largest parishes cannot do on their own. For example, the Disci-ples Response Fund puts money into an endowment for the care of retired priests. The fund also supports efforts to assist the poor and homeless, subsidizes the good work of Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp, assists with education expenses for our seminarians, and much more.

As you know, we are implementing a new way to increase support of the Disciples Response Fund Annual Appeal and to assist St. Stephen Cathedral Parish by returning to us 50% of all funds raised over our target.

Pope Francis has designated 2016 as a “Year of Mercy”; he instructs us to open our hearts. The Diocese helps to make God’s mercy present throughout Western Kentucky. If you received a letter from Bishop Medley asking for your support of the DRF, please reflect prayerfully on your blessings and make a generous gift today.

Boxtops Blitz is on! We are having a competition between our four classrooms for boxtops. The winning classroom will have a treat at

the end. Save those boxtops and if you have a favorite teacher put her name on the envelope. Our Three year olds had a Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Day and we asked them, “What makes the stars twin-kle?” Here are some of their thoughts: “God puts sprinkles on them,” “Mommy makes them twinkle,” “The moon does it,” “Diamonds make them sparkle,” “God does it,” “The light from the sun makes them sparkle,” “Chester does it,” (not sure who Chester is).

We began our gathering with the Byzantine Litany of Peace, which dates back to around 300AD. Grace-filled and educational. It was perfect for what ails our nation and the world. This 2000 year old litany covers prayers for the government, for weather and for church unity end-ing with prayers to ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother. We enjoyed pizza and outside games ending with a reflection from Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Fr. Jamie
