St. Simon the Apostle Third Sunday of Lent March 04, 2018

Third Sunday of Lent Today is the third Sunday of our Lenten preparation. Today’s readings begin with a listing of the simple, straightforward

rules in Exodus. However, in First Corinthians, we see that our faith is anything but simple rules. Our faith is in the spirit of a crucified Christ, a God whose foolishness is wiser than our wisdom, whose weakness is stronger than our strength. John’s Gospel does nothing to help reconcile these seemingly irreconcilable expressions of faith. Jesus sees people conducting business outside the temple and reacts violently. Jesus’ anger at the disrespect shown by following the letter but not the spirit of the Law is palpable. Jesus is the Spirit of the Law. It is Jesus, the Crucified, to whom we look for our faith.

LIVE BY THE RULES Life might be easier if there were just a list of rules that we could follow. There is such a list in Exodus. Rules offer the false sense of security that if we follow them then we will have done enough. Our Christian faith, however, is rooted not in rules, but in Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection defy all the rules. Jesus knew that strength is born of weakness and wisdom born of foolishness. Jesus’ life embodies that paradox. What Jesus knew when he went up to Jerusalem and entered the temple area was that his Father’s house had been made a marketplace, a place of commerce, transactions, and exchange of goods for money. What the temple represents, who Jesus is, is a relationship, an ongoing relationship of one soul to another, of our souls to God.

RISE IN RELATIONSHIP Rules are the most basic and primitive way to shape our behavior in accordance with larger principles and truths that go beyond rules. The rule says “You shall not kill,” but the truth is that all life is sacred and must be protected and safeguarded. The rule is the least you can do. Jesus lived as if he were required to do not the least but the most. He lived as if he must not just protect and safeguard the lives before him. He lived as if he must sacrifice his own life for the lives of others. Jesus understood that the rules were not just about avoiding certain acts but were also about embracing certain truths. Not only must one not kill, one must have the strength to give one’s own life for others if that is required. One must not lie but must speak the truth even when to do so seems foolish. These rules outline for us the beginning of our understanding of strength born of weakness, wisdom born of foolishness. Jesus shows us how much is really required. Copyright (c) J. S. Lenten Activities:

RCIA On Thursday, March 22, 2018 our RCIA class will attend their last class in preparation for their full reception into the church during this year's Easter Vigil. During this final class, which will be held in church (7:00pm-8:15pm), Rick Eschel-bach of the RCIA Team will lead the session which is a walk-through of the rituals and ceremonies of Holy Week. Any pa-rishioner who is interested in learning more about the church's "Great Week" is welcome to attend this session.

LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS On Friday, March 23, 2018 at 7:30pm all parishioners are in-vited to the Living Stations of the Cross. Members of our par-ish reenact the poignant events of the last hours of Jesus be-fore his death. The meditations that accompany these actions were written by St. Pope John Paul II for the outdoor Stations of the Cross in Rome during the Jubilee year of 2000. Imme-diately following the conclusion of the presentation of the Liv-ing Stations exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in Church until 9:15pm.

A LENTEN INVITATION Once again this Lenten season here at St. Simon Parish we have a wonderful opportunity to live out this profound senti-ment, "Faith is genuine only if crowned by charity". We will "crown" our faith by performing a work of charity on Satur-day morning, March 24, 2018 as we conduct our annual Len-ten food drive to benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as the Affton Christian Churches Food Pantry, of which St. Simon Parish is a member. On Saturday morning, March 24, 2018 volunteers will be out-side the lower church doors from 7:30am-11:00am to receive your "works of charity" in the form of contributions of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items for use by these wonderful organizations as they strive to meet the challenges of those in our area who are in need. Following is a list of suggested items for donation by last names: ABC...Rice/Pasta or Pasta Sauce/Mac & Cheese DEF....Jars of Baby Food/Powdered Milk/Peanut Butter GHI...Canned Meat (chicken/ham/Spam) JKL...Canned Vegetables/Canned Fruit MNO...Canned Ravioli/Spaghetti/Sloppy Joe/Stew/ Chili PQR....Flour/Sugar/Box Mixes (Cake, Au Gratin or Scalloped Potato) STU....Cereal/Pancake Mix and Syrup VWXYZ...Canned or box Soup/Ramen Noodles Additional items needed are: paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues, bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, house-hold cleaners and laundry detergent. Monetary donations will also be gratefully accepted. Volunteers of all ages (those under 18 must have a parent or guardian present the entire time) are needed that morning to help receive, sort, box-up and deliver the items. Those with vans/SUVs/pickup trucks to help transport the items are espe-cially needed. If you (or your family) are available to help, please contact Rick Eschelbach at 314-541-5304 or [email protected]

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

March 4, 2018 - 3rd Sunday of Lent “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” - Exodus 20:4 How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health.

March 4-Third Sunday of Lent: In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked “What sign can you show us?” Every day we can see signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing to others. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can be a sign of God’s love to the suffering and poor.

St. Vincent De Paul Society News :

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – The Cross There is so much to reflect upon in the readings today. First, we can reflect on the Ten Commandments in the proper way and what their true nature is: they are guideposts to living in authentic freedom for goodness. They are not mere restrictions against fun as the world often tells us. Second, Paul reminds us that we must preach Christ crucified and never offer less than the truth about our faith to others. Christ’s Passion shows us that we too must endure suffering in order to enter into glory. Finally, the Gospel shows the righteous anger of Christ and foreshadows His Resurrection from the dead. We are called to walk the road to Calvary with Christ and enter into the mystery of His suffering. archstl.org/dynamic

The Knights of Columbus Crusader Council Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank everyone who donated their time and talents on Tuesday, February 20th. We had St. Simon students, quilters, and everyone in between. We sewed, ironed, folded and bagged 160 pillowcases for Cases for Smiles, with another 60 pillowcases made and donated by a very busy parishioner, for a total credited to St. Simon of 220 pillowcases!!! These brightly colored pillowcases will be given to children in 3 area children’s hospitals going through cancer and other lifesaving treatments. The pillowcases help to brighten the children’s day and give them something to look forward to, picking out just the right pillowcase for themselves. Again, THANK YOU to everyone who helped that night with a special thank you to Jack who came with his wife. After walking into the Lower Church Hall full of women working away, Jack stayed and helped with Linda, his wife. I hope that if you didn’t come this year that you can come next year. It is a fun night for a good cause. Come back Jack!
