Greetings, This Tuesday we begin our 92nd school year at St. Sebastian Parish School! Welcome back students, faculty and staff. During the long summer the school has been painted, updated, improved and scrubbed. She will look as different to you as our students look different to her after three months of growth, larger school clothes to match and first day of school haircuts. The school to which are students are returning, ranked last year as one of the highest in the eight counties of our diocese in both growth and achievement! We received notice just this week that St. Sebastian Parish School finished in the top three in the Akron Beacon Journal’s “Best of the Best” in the category of private schools. Our new entrance is finished, making the school not only easier to navigate for first time visitors but also much safer. Some new exterior lighting should be finished in time for the first day of school and the grounds crew have done a magnificent job of making our campus a beautiful place for children to learn. There will be, of course, some difficult waters to navigate as we wait to see what COVID has ready for us as we all head indoors. St. Sebastian is well prepared for any eventuality, as I think was proven last year. Also, I wish blessings on those who attend others schools and on our students returning to college. Be safe, do well and make your patron St. Sebastian proud! IN OTHER NEWS: CHANGE IN THE MASS SCHEDULE: Thursday daily Mass is moving to 8:00am this week! The reason the Thursday Mass was at 8:15 was that this is the Mass that the school attended. About ten years ago I decided to keep it at 8:15 year-round to avoid confusion when it changed back and forth. Because of COVID and crowding, the school Mass was moved to later in the morning. Since there is no longer a need to have Mass at 8:15, it will be permanently moved, year-round, to 8:00am beginning this week. GOLFER’S MASS: There are only a couple of weeks left for the 7:00am Sunday Summer Mass. This Mass time comes to an end Labor Day weekend. DIOCESAN SCHOOL PLAN UPDATE: As you might recall, I serve on the diocese’s Think Tank for the future of Catholic schools. We have been meeting and working diligently over the summer with the hope of submitting a plan in October. It is a huge undertaking trying to reinvent how we do “school” when it hasn’t really changed that much since the founding of the diocese! Please pray for the endeavor to make our schools better and more affordable! God bless, Fr. Valencheck

West Side Catholic Couples Fall Brunch Consider participating in a small group book study with other couples from St. Sebastian and neighboring parishes, in West Side Catholic Couples. Every month we have a lively meeting to discuss a chapter from a book, to pray together and to encourage each other in our common challenges as Catholic couples. If you have a need for some serious discussion, some lighthearted conversation and lots of laughs with people who share a common commitment to the Church, then you will find yourself most welcome among us. WSCC will begin its 11th year in October. We are having our annual Fall Brunch on Sunday, September 19, after the St. Sebastian 9:00am Mass at Jeff & Cynthia Sheeks house located at 1498 Jefferson Ave., 44313 and you are invited. Anyone interested in participating, (or even just curious), in this challenging and yet enjoyable book study is welcome to join us. This year we will be studying “Rescued: the Unexpected and Extraordinary News of the Gospel” by Fr. John Riccardo, a tremendous book for anyone wishing to pursue Christ and his Gospel wholeheartedly. Any questions or details contact Dave and Kathleen Myers at 330-603-8236 or [email protected]. Lighthouse CD’s The Lighthouse CD rack is once again located in the main church lobby. Stop by and browse for great titles to encourage you in faith or to give away to others. Please note: we frequently change the titles on the rack and some of them are available for free on FORMED. Check FORMED before purchasing from the rack.

Catechetical Corner Question: Why, at the opening of the Gospel reading, do we bless ourselves on the forehead, lips, and chest? The making of the sign of the cross on our forehead, lips, and heart comprises a prayer. The sense is to pray, “God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart,” or another way of saying it would be to pray, “May the Gospel be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.” It is to prepare us, not only to hear the Gospel, but to receive it in our minds and hearts in order to proclaim it with our lips.

Have a question you would like to see addressed in the Catechetical Corner? Send to Keith Johnson at [email protected].

--Keith Johnson, Parish Catechetical Leader

PSR Registration PSR helps to form children and adolescents who do not attend Catholic school, by instructing them in Christian doctrine and spirituality so that they might become knowledgeable and faithful disciples of

Christ. Classes are open to children from 4 years of age to 8th grade and take place in the Parish School building on Sundays from 9:15am–10:30am. Registration is currently open for the 2021-22 school year. You can download a registration form from our website or stop by the rectory to pick one up. Classes begin September 12.

PSR Teachers Needed We are in need of some more PSR teachers. Please prayerfully consider making an investment in the spiritual lives of our children and their families by helping out in this vital ministry. No special training is required. We provide everything you need. If you’re interested, please contact our PSR Principal, Cinnamon Chivers at [email protected]. On the Lighter Side The Kindergartener A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom as the children drew pictures. The teacher would occasionally walk around and see each child’s artwork. As she approached one little girl who was working especially hard, she asked what the drawing was. The little girl told her: “I’m drawing God!” “But sweetie,” the teacher replied, “no one actually knows what God looks like.” Automatically, the little girl continued drawing and said, “well, they certainly will in a minute!”

Welcome Back Students – We are excited to welcome back students for an exciting new year. The first day of classes for grades 1-8 will be Tuesday, August 24th. All our teachers will be in their classrooms ready to greet you and several organizations will be set-up in Zwisler Hall to discuss their programs for the new school year. New Family Picnic – How wonderful to welcome so many new school families at our picnic last week. It was great to meet you and answer some of your questions. Thank you to our school’s Welcoming Committee for not only hosting such a fun event, but for reaching out to so many of our families over the summer and welcoming them to our school community.

The Harvest Is Great - the Laborers Are Few

Sharing Secrets The Legion of Mary Our Lady of Humility shares from The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. The saint writes of 50 “Roses” or secrets of the most Holy Rosary. Twenty-First Rose: The Fifteen Mysteries A mystery is a sacred thing which is difficult to understand. The works of Jesus and Mary can also be called wonderful flowers; but their perfume and beauty can only be appreciated by those who study them carefully – and who open them and drink in their scent by diligent and sincere meditation. Saint Dominic has divided up the lives of Our Lord and Our Lady into fifteen mysteries which stand for their virtues and their most important actions. They are fifteen shining mirrors which help us to know Jesus and Mary and to know ourselves as well. They will also help light the fire of their love in our hearts. Our Lady taught Saint Dominic this excellent method of praying and ordered him to preach it far and wide so as to reawaken the fervor of Christians and to revive in their hearts a love for Our Blessed Lord. The first part of the Rosary is The Joyful Mysteries because of the joy which they gave to the whole universe. The second part of the Rosary is the Sorrowful Mysteries because they show us Our Lord weighed down with sadness, covered with wounds, laden with insults, suffering and torments. The third part is the Glorious Mysteries because when we say them, we meditate on Jesus and Mary in their triumph and glory. These are the fifteen fragrant flowers of the Mystical Rose Tree; devout souls fly to them like wise bees, so as to gather their nectar and make the honey of a solid devotion.

Adult Faith Formation Coming in the fall: The Domestic Church! At Baptism we vowed to raise our children in the faith and to become their primary educators for their religious formation. But many of us are unsure of what that means. Join us for this 6 week foray to explore this idea of the Domestic Church. These sessions are perfect for those planning to get married, or for those newly married or with young children. But it can be beneficial to anyone in any setting. Sessions will be on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 from September 22 through October 27. For more information contact Keith Johnson at [email protected] or 330-836-2233 ext. 134.

RCIA 2021-2022 “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations” In Mathew’s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He will be with them as they teach others as they have

been taught. As we share our faith with others, we share more than knowledge: we share our relationship with God. As such, our faith is the greatest gift that we can share with others. The RCIA [Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults] has begun planning for this year. If you know someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic or is looking for more information, please invite them to contact Fr. Peter Morris either by calling the office 330-836-2233 or by email at [email protected].

Walsh Jesuit Fall Retreat Begins Soon St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises have had an impact on the prayer life of Christians, Catholic and non-Catholic, around the world for 500 years. Centered on Jesus, the

Exercises are a means to deepen our personal relationship with Him and to discover a way to find God in our daily lives, indeed, as Ignatius says, to find God in all things. The Spirituality Program for Adults (SPA) is an adaptation of these Spiritual Exercises for people who live busy lives. It is a spiritual retreat over eight weeks (nine sessions) which demands only ½ hour a day at home, along with one session at Walsh Jesuit per week, from 7:00 to 9:30pm. There is no charge for this retreat. It is open to people of all faith backgrounds. Come and bring a friend. The nine sessions this semester will be held in Walsh Jesuit High School’s chapel on Tuesdays, beginning September 21 and ending on November 16. Deadline for registration is midnight, Friday, September 17th. For more information, please contact Jaci Yoder at 330-338-4549 ext. 264 or by email at [email protected]. You may also contact Fr.
