Dear Friends,

We celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord today and heard about how God’s very self is revealed to people of all nations through the Incarnation. The emphasis today was on this revelation to foreigners: the foreign nations that will now pay tribute to the restored Jerusalem, the Gentiles whom Paul recognized as now being copartners through the Gospel, and the magi from the east who recognized the Messiah and paid him homage. In our travels this week, let us be on the lookout for the presence of our incarnate Savior who lives among us in the most unlikely of persons, places and events!

As we near the closing of the Christmas season I want to again express gratitude to all who made our Christmas celebrations so meaningful. I am deeply grateful to our altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, sacristans, ushers and greeters, organists, musicians, cantors and choir under the direction of Kevin Lutz. I want to acknowledge the work of the volunteers who assisted in decorating the church and hall for the Christmas liturgies. Our church always looks so beautiful for Christmas and I have received many compliments on our sacred environment. In next week’s bulletin the Christmas collection will be listed. THANK YOU for your continued generosity to your parish as we strive to bring the Good News of our Incarnate Lord to all who enter our community and church.

On the topic of generosity, you are aware that our Poor Box donation are used by the parish’s Saint Vincent de Paul Society to meet the needs of those less fortunate among us. I am so happy to report that for 2017 you have donated $7,729.00 towards their outreach. I was never aware of your generosity until I assumed the responsibility of processing the donations from the Poor Boxes. On behalf of the society and the needy they serve, THANK YOU for your kind and thoughtful donations.

In last week’s bulletin I announced that beginning in February there will be an additional envelope in your packet marked “50 for 50.” This envelope is an invitation for a free-will, one time donation to express your gratitude to our parish on the occasion of our Golden Jubilee. There is no pressure with this extra envelope. It is the custom in many places that during a significant milestone in the life of a parish that and increased offertory program or campaign is initiated. Of course, here at Saint Robert’s we are still in the final year of a building campaign and I did not want to initiate an Increased Offertory program (the last of which was conducted in 2004). This envelope is a way of expressing gratitude to God for what you have received along your journey of faith through the ministries of our parish.

On January 20th we will celebrate First Penance with our children in the third grade school and PREP program. Please keep these young people in your prayers as they prepare to encounter the mercy of Jesus in this sacrament for the first time.

May 2018 be filled with abundant blessings for our parish as we mark our Golden Jubilee and may Saint Robert Bellarmine, our patron, inspire us to work this year for the greater glory of God!

With prayers,

of th

e Lord

The Epiphany

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12

The Manifestation of Our God

The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord embodies a rich liturgical tradition,

originating in the earliest Christian centuries. In the Eastern Churches, this day occupies

an even greater prominence than Christmas. Rome has assimilated it into the Christmas

season where too often the faithful understand it to be only a commemoration of the

visit of the Magi to the newborn Christ.

The account of the Magi is indeed a rich and beautiful story that shows well the

virtues—and perils—of seeking Christ. However, this Solemnity reveals so much more to us! Taken together,

the Gospel accounts of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, and his first sign (or miracle) at the

wedding feast at Cana, draw our attention to the depth of God’s profound saving love for us in Christ, a love

which extends to the ends of the Earth!

Join us for this opportunity to share and

pray together, supporting one another in our time of

grief.

Please RSVP to Joan Fitzpatrick if you would like to

Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your

God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you

with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10

As the Christmas season closes and a new year begins, take time to reflect on the gift God gives us in Jesus. Why not make this the year when you

draw closer to the God who loves you!

University of Notre Dame Vision Summer Program vision.nd.edu

Dear friends, My name is Maria Corr. I am a parishioner and cantor at St. Robert’s and a current sophomore at the University of Notre Dame studying English and Theology. I’m writing to invite you to join me on campus this summer at Notre Dame Vision. Vision is a faith conference that assists participants in strengthening their own spiritual lives through large group experiences, interactive small group work, speeches, music, Masses and sacrament services. Vision is open to all high school students (including those entering the 9th grade, and those who will graduate in spring 2018) from across the country. These students will

live in dorms and eat at dining halls to ensure they receive the “full college experience” while exploring their faith at one of the world’s best Catholic universities. During the one-week session, high school students are under the guidance of ND undergraduates (myself, included), known as Mentors-In-Faith. Mentors are trained to lead students in small group conversations and activities inspired by national speakers’ witness talks, as well as their own stories in faith development. This summer, Vision runs over the course of four one-week conferences: June 18-June 22; Jun 25-June 29; July 9-July 13; July 16-July 20. Aside from the high school conference, Vision also offers programs for youth/liturgical music ministers, pastors and religious educators ages 18+. Please visit the website vision.nd.edu for more information on these conferences, as well as pricing, transportation, and the application process. Personally, I found high school to be a pivotal time in the development of my spiritual life. It wasn’t until my senior year that I truly discovered a sense of personal responsibility for practicing my faith. My time at Notre Dame has helped me to further understand the importance of active conversation in the exploration of God’s call for us to live fully and faithfully. I truly believe Vision is an ideal outlet for high school students to reflect on and pray about all aspects of life with one another. I highly recommend taking advantage of this perfect opportunity to question, share, and learn from peers in personal faith-formation. If you have any questions about this program/application, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I hope you have a wonderful New Year! God bless & Go Irish, Maria Corr

As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, we will renew for this year the Valentine Mass for married couples on February 9 at 7 P.M. This is a time for all married couples to
