Dear Parish Family,
The Magi brought the gifts they could bring to Christ: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Today’s
celebration of the Epiphany should encourage each of us to reflect on the gifts we can bring to
Christ, so that he may put them to use in building his kingdom here on earth. The gifts don’t have to be expensive, but they
must come from the heart of who we are, and must be rooted in the unique way that each of us has been fashioned by
God.
What is the most valuable gift that each of us has to offer? A sense of humor? An ability to pray with others? Kindness,
gentleness and patience? An ability to fix cars or computers? Musical talent or the ability to make others feel welcome?
Each of us has a gift that can be offered to Christ. In making that concrete choice, we can help to make God’s presence
known, and so the Epiphany continues. In Mass we present our gifts of bread and wine. These represent
all the offerings that we make to the Lord. As we do so, Christ will lovingly accept them and then return
them to us, transformed into his body and blood. This is all the nourishment we need to continue to love
and serve the Lord.

St. Rita pray for us!
Learn to make rosaries
Our St. Rita’s Rosary Makers donated over
One Thousand, Two Hundred (1,200)
rosaries in 2017!
Other than giving our “home-made” rosaries to St.
Rita’s for the church’s ministries, we also send rosaries
to St. Paul Street Evangelization which distributes them
all over the world.
St. Rita’s Rosary Makers meets on the 2nd and 4th
Tuesday mornings right after Mass (about 9:00am) in
the Verhagen Building.
Our goal is to advance the devotion of the rosary and
our Blessed Mother as she leads people to Jesus.
If you don’t know how to make mission (cord) rosaries
we’d love to teach you. Just stop in and check out this fun
group.

Calling all Volunteers! Do you have a heart for serving others? Would you like to
help affirm the human dignity of incarcerated people as a prison
instructor, tutor, or donor?
Since January 2017, The University of Arizona’s Prison
Instruction to Strengthen Minds (PRISM) provides higher
education to individuals incarcerated in the Tucson area. A
coalition comprised of University of Arizona faculty and students
as well as members of the Tucson community, PRISM believes
that education is a right for all people. PRISM advocates for
higher education access in prisons. This initiative is staffed by
volunteers and operates on grants and donations from the
community.
If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering as
an instructor in any subject (Master’s Degree or equivalent
required) or to assist as a tutor (no advanced degree necessary)
or donating to PRISM please contact Ms. Maria Conti:
[email protected]. No prior prison volunteering
experience is necessary, and training will be provided.
Children’s Story Hour at St. Rita in the Desert Tell your friends….bring your friends! Arizona’s Children Association is bringing a Children’s Story
Hour to St. Rita in the Desert. Aimed at strengthening school
readiness skills of children ages 0-5, it will consist of 2-3 themed
storybook readings, followed by a related parent-child activity, all under
the guidance of an early-childhood instructor. Come join us EVERY
Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30pm in the hall. It is open to anyone
accompanied by toddlers and preschoolers.
Italian Dinner Friday, February 9, 2018, at 6:00pm
$18.00 for adults
$10.00 for children 5-11 years
free for 4 and under
Menu will be Italian Bread, Caprese Salad
and Caesar Salad followed by a meat or
vegetable lasagna and a spaghetti side. Dessert
will be Cannoli Cake. Coffee, lemonade and
water will be free, with a no host bar sponsored by the Knights
of Columbus. All adult ticket prices include one glass of wine
from the bar.
This year the Guild is excited to announce a new head chef:
Ann Cook. But first we extend a very big THANK YOU to
Pam Franklin who has been the head chef of the Italian Dinner
for over 10 years. Without Pam, the Italian Dinner would
never have continued on as a tradition at St. Rita's - a tradition
of delicious homemade Italian food and wonderful fellowship
with our church family and guests. Pam, the St. Rita's Guild
wishes you all the best and again says THANK YOU for your many
years of dedication to the Guild and Italian Dinner. We hope to see
you at the Italian Dinner relaxing and enjoying the meal and the
fellowship.
Silent Auction The Annual Italian Dinner would not be complete without
our Silent Auction. Each year we auction off a variety of
wonderful items generously donated by our parishioners and
the community. We are looking for items for this year's
auction. If you have any new or gently used items or even gift
cards that you don't plan to use and you think they would
make a great auction item, drop them off at the church office
or contact Regina at (520) 549-8334 to set up a meeting
time. All monies raised from the Silent Auction is used by the
Guild to support events here at St. Rita's - from Monthly
Coffee Sundays to Sacramental Receptions, stocking the
kitchen with supplies and much, much more.
Volunteers The Annual Italian Dinner and Silent Auction is a big event
that takes the support of many volunteers. Volunteers are
needed to help with decorating, food preparation, food service,
ticket sales and more.
Any questions, call Regina at (520) 549-8334.

Jan 13 & 14 Minister Schedule
St. Hilary of Poitiers - Feast Day January 13 This staunch defender of the divinity of Christ was a gentle and
courteous man, devoted to writing some of the greatest theology on
the Trinity, and was like his Master in being labeled a “disturber of
the peace.” In a very troubled period in the Church, his holiness was
lived out in both scholarship and controversy. He was bishop of
Poitiers in France.
Raised a pagan, he was converted to Christianity when he met his
God of nature in the Scriptures. His wife was still living when he was
chosen, against his will, to be the bishop of Poitiers in France. He was
soon taken up with battling what became the scourge of the fourth
century, Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ.
When Emperor Constantius ordered all the bishops of the West
to sign a condemnation of Athanasius (the great defender of the faith
in the East), Hilary refused and was banished from France to far off
Phrygia.
While writing in exile, he was invited by some semi-Arians
(hoping for reconciliation) to a council the emperor called to
counteract the Council of Nicea. But Hilary predictably defended the
Church, and when he sought public debate with the heretical bishop
who had exiled him, the Arians, dreading the meeting and its
outcome, pleaded with the emperor to send this troublemaker back
home. Hilary was welcomed by his people. -Franciscan Media - Saint of the Day
