LA ASCENSIÓN DEL SEÑOR EN LA VIDA DEL CRISTIANO Testigos de Cristo La Ascensión de Cristo es también el punto de partida para comenzar a ser testigos y anunciadores de Cristo exaltado que volvió al Padre para sentarse a su derecha. El Señor glorificado continúa presente en el mundo por medio de su acción en los que creen en su Palabra y dejan que el Espíritu actúe interiormente en ellos. El mandato de Jesús es claro y vigente: "Id al mundo entero y proclamad el Evangelio a toda la creación". Por ello, la nueva presencia del Resucitado en su Iglesia hace que sus seguidores constituyan la comunidad de vida y de salvación. La fuerza del Evangelio La Ascensión de Cristo al cielo no es el fin de su presencia entre los hombres, sino el comienzo de una nueva forma de estar en el mundo. Su presencia acompaña con signos la misión evangelizadora de sus discípulos. La comunidad pospascual necesitó de un tiempo para reforzar su fe incipiente en el Resucitado. La Ascensión es el fin de su visibilidad terrena y el inicio de un nuevo tipo de presencia entre nosotros. Misión de la Iglesia San Lucas, después de escribir su Evangelio, emprende también con la inspiración divina la tarea de redactar algo de lo que ocurrió después de que Jesús resucitara y subiera a los cielos. Es la historia de los comienzos de la Iglesia, esos tiempos fundacionales en los que el mensaje cristiano comienza a proclamarse como una doc-trina nueva y sorprendente que habría de transformar al mundo entero. Así nos refiere que el Señor, antes de subir al trono de su gloria y enviarles la fuerza avasalladora del Espíritu, se les aparece una y otra vez durante cuarenta días, para fortalecerlos en la fe y encenderlos en la caridad, para animarlos con la más viva esperanza. Toma tu Cruz Con la Ascensión, el mandato de Jesús cobra una fuerza singular; se comprende el valor de la Pasión y la Muerte. Desde esa nueva perspectiva, la Cruz era la fuerza y la sabiduría de Dios. Desde ese mo-mento se podía hablar de perdón y de conversión, sin dudar del amor y del poder divino de Jesús. Fue posible predicar la conversión, exhortar a los hom-bres para que se reconciliaran con Dios, lleno de misericordia. Hoy conmemoramos la Ascensión del Señor. Esta solemnidad celebra que nuestro destino es el cielo. Abre una etapa de oración expectante en que aguardamos al Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés. Ante la atónita mirada de los apóstoles, Jesús asciende y entra en comunión de poder y vida con Dios. El Señor ‘no se esfuma,’ sino que, desde ese momento y por poder divino, permanece en nosotros. Cada discípulo está llamado a caminar con fe en humilde servicio a Dios. Que esta Letanía sea un sereno recuerdo de la persona de Cristo y fuente de inspiración. La historia asegura que el Cardenal Rafael M. del Val (1865-1930), Secretario de Estado del Papa San Pio X, acostumbraba rezar esta letanía tras celebrar la Misa. Letanía de la Humildad ¡Oh Jesús! Manso y humilde de corazón, escúchame. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of

the Lord. It reminds us that our home is in heaven. It also opens a period of prayer and expectation, waiting for the Holy Spirit in Pentecost. When Jesus is taken from the apostles’ sight He enters into communion of power and life with the living God. The Lord has not ‘gone away,’ but now and forever by God’s power He is present with us and for us. Every disciple is called to walk in faith and humbly serve God. May this Litany be a bright reminder of Christ’s character and a source of inspiration to us. Tradition holds that Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val (1865-1930), Secretary of State for Pope Saint Pius X, used to pray this Litany after celebrating daily Mass. The Litany of Humility O Jesus! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The mystery of the Ascension has to do with holding in tension a sense of God’s nearness, along with the burden caused by apparent signs of absence. The risen Jesus says to Mary Magdalene, “Do not cling to me,” perhaps pointing out to her that his physical presence to the disciples was time-bound and temporary. It was a gift for their transfor-mation, and after forty days, he vanished from their sight and hearing, though never out of their consciousness. They do not mourn at his going this time: there is no trace of the disciples who hid in fear at his crucifixion, no sense of the women who wept softly as they carried ointments to the tomb through the dewy morning light. Instead, the scriptural accounts show them full of joy, comforted by his promise to be with them forever, and open to the Spirit’s power. They are joyful, energized, aware, and united with one another in love. They seem to grasp an awareness that if the mission to the whole world was a serious one, then the presence of the Risen Christ could not be pinned down to any one place or time, but had to be always and everywhere completely available. All peoples, all times, all cultures were opened to receive him in this moment of the Ascension.
